    Emotional Bodies

A Workshop on the historical Performativity of Emotions

The idea that the body is the site in which emotions are expressed is an old one in Western Culture. However, shall we alternatively consider emotions as historical agents that have given meaning to systems of symbolic relations which we understand here as “bodies”? This three-day workshop seeks to explore the conception of emotions as cultural practices that do things and have the power of creating emotional bodies throughout history. With this aim in mind, we will examine the production of physical, social, political, artistic and literary bodies in connection with the changing meaning of social norms, cultural codes and institutions, and especially as the result of the work of emotions.

Representations of Power and Power of the Image in British and American Contemporary Photography

Représentations du pouvoir et pouvoir de l’image dans la photographie contemporaine américaine et britannique

From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

    Kolloquium - Frühe Neuzeit

How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?

Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?

Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

Michel Foucault : arts & humanities in the 21st Century

Art and architectural history, visual culture, literary studies, media and film studies and aesthetics have all “partaken” of Foucauldian theories, but a comparative exploration of Foucault’s significance has been lacking.  If the reception of Foucault has focused on single disciplines and discrete areas of thought, it has also differed across specific linguistic and/or geo-political lines. This colloquium seeks to map the philosophy of Foucault as it impacts the future of the arts and humanities across cultures, institutions and practices.

    Medieval manuscripts in motion

The 2nd edition of the International Conference "Medieval Europe in Motion" is already underway. It will take place in Lisbon, March 4-6, 2015. The conference's main scientific goal is, once more, to analyse the phenomenon of circulation, motion and mobility of people, forms and ideas during the Middle Ages. This time, however, the focus will be on the illuminated manuscripts. This three-day Conference aims thus to conduct a critical and constructive revision of research on Iberian Book Illumination in the Middle Ages, proposing new questions to be discussed.

Representations of the life of Leonardo da Vinci in motion pictures

    Art History Supplement, May 2014

Taking the image of Leonardo da Vinci as a paradigm, this issue of Art History Supplement seeks papers that discuss the uses, and abuses, in the representations of the lives of Leonardo. The artist and the canonization, the commodification of the images of the artist and his oeuvre; the popularisation of Leonardo, or just making academic knowledge accessible to a public; as it seems happening in La vita di Leonardo da Vinci; combining fiction and documentary.

Courts and Courtly Cultures in Early Modern Italy and Europe

    Models and Languages

The conference will focus on the topic of court culture in Lombardy and North Italy, within the conceptual framework of the SNF Sinergia project: Constructing identity: visual, spatial, and literary cultures in Lombardy, 14th to 16th centuries. This interdisciplinary project, which includes five research unities in the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, and EPFL at Lausanne, works on Visconti and Sforza ages, when Lombardy, one of the most important European regions, established itself as a distinct political and cultural entity. It has been an exemplary case of the construction of a cultural identity, whose repercussions still resonate in present-day Italy. As a part of a potent political project, it has been sustained by complex mechanisms of self-representation and the imposition of a prestige taste. The conference will conclude the research of the Sinergia project discussing its results in a wider historical, literary, architectural and artistic context and verifying its methodological approaches at the light of multiple points of view.
