Links between psychology and law rightly raise more and more scientific awareness. The human being, as the common object of this two fields, is studied from both an individual and a social perspective. This stream is an invitation to build an interface and exchange between clinical psychology, cross cultural psychology, justice and law through a critical perspective. This critical approach can be reached with a psychoanalytical lecture of society. This stream is an invitation to an interdisciplinary dialogue to open discussions in a world in perpetual motion. We are looking for papers on those topics: Psychocriminology, Critical Psychology, Psychoanalysis, Post-colonial and Critical historical studies.

Cognition Verbs

Modality, evidentiality and cognition

We will explore cognition verbs from a cross-linguistic perspective. The data from a sample of languages will enable us to examine the interaction between language and cognition, the evolution patterns of cognition verbs and the near-synonymity of phrases such as I think, I guess or I suppose. The keynote speaker Jan Nuyts (university of Antwerp) will present historical data that questions the origin of the parenthetical uses of mental state verbs, and allows us to reinvestigate the questions of grammaticalisation and subjectification.

Méthodes en prosodie et recherches sur l’intonation : données, théories et transcription

École d’été Prosodie 2016

L’école d’été Prosodie 2016 permettra le regroupement de chercheurs autour des aspects théoriques et pratiques qui animent les recherches actuelles en prosodie. L’école sera organisée autour de conférences le matin et de tutoriels l’après-midi (où les participants mettront en applications les concepts discutés le matin lors des sessions de conférences) et manipuleront des données cliniques (les participants pourront venir avec leur propres données et questions afin d’animer les discussions). Cette école est ouverte aux étudiants de troisième cycle ainsi qu’aux chercheurs intéressés par les aspects théoriques et pratiques des recherches en prosodique. Cette école est à la fois pensée pour les chercheurs qui travaillent déjà sur la prosodie et l’intonation et qui approfondir d’avantage certains aspects particuliers, mais aussi pour les chercheurs qui souhaitent mieux comprendre comment incorporer et intégrer la prosodie à leur travail.

Protest is an intrinsic part of human culture, which enables subjects to express their dissatisfaction with existing social structures and hegemonic hierarchies of power. Protests have occurred across time periods and contexts, and have taken numerous different forms, ranging from personal expressions of discontent to united movements for revolutionary change. Protests can be individual or collective, personal or political, spontaneous or carefully planned, but they are generally orientated towards destabilising the status quo and establishing new modes of existence. Over the ages, political, social and cultural protests have successfully toppled authoritarian regimes, exposed and confronted dominant imbalances of power, and ameliorated conditions for disenfranchised members of society.

The tragic attacks in Paris on 7 January and 13 November 2015 have engendered vivid debates about national identity and national culture in France, and accelerated the promotion of patriotism by the socialist government. At the European level, whereas the death of nations has been predicted along with the triumph of globalisation, nations and nationalism make a spectacular come back in public debates, and put most European left-wing parties in an embarrassing position. In the aftermath of world war two, the Left gradually became suspicious of references to the nation, traditionally associated with rightwing ideologies. Yet in a time of identity debates and persistent collective attachment to nations, patriotism, sovereignty and nationalism are also increasingly used as political arguments.

We invite to this seminar Biocultural Dimensions of the Everyday life researchers interested in the study of the body, of the human embodiment, of the techniques of the body, of the linkages between bodily action and material culture, of the human/animal co-actions, of the nutrition, of the health, of the bodily education, of the dance, of the sexuality and of other fragments of everyday life that invite to think about the complexity of the human being-in-the-world.

Mythe et émotions

Il existe une logique rationnelle mais aussi une logique émotionnelle, responsable de nombreuses actions que nous réalisons. La mythocritique aborde souvent les récits mythiques depuis une perspective structurelle, sociale, historique, etc. Cependant, elle ignore souvent le composant émotionnel. Il semblerait que la dimension affective, particulièrement présente dans notre société contemporaine, ne soit pas pertinente dans les études de mythologie. Le Congrès examinera le rôle que jouent les émotions aussi bien dans la structuration des récits mythiques que dans les procès de mythification de personnages et événements historiques. Le cadre de travail est l’étude des mythes anciens, médiévaux et modernes dans la littérature et les arts contemporains (depuis 1900).

International Conference

Many African countries experience a context in which society is constantly faced against the State or private corporations. In this situation, civil society organizations become key players into continent’s political chessboard. Acting in various fields and often seeking non-traditional forms of organization, they pose new challenges to their analysis and interpretation. To meet these defiances, the Centro de Estudos Internacionais of the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (CEI-IUL) promote between 12^th and 13^th January 2017, the International Conference Activisms in Africa, which will discuss the new profiles of social activism in Africa and the perspectives of change they bring.

We are especially interested in manuscripts on social rights and democracy. Our intent is to prepare a set of discussions on how democracies promote social rights today, i.e., to what extent social movements, legal institutions, parliaments and executive power are able to find solutions to the challenges of democracies today? Have, for example, affirmative action, housing and health care programs, and even direct financial assistance to the poor actually reduced inequality? In addition, what are the most effective solutions for poverty? Are courts the best way to ensure social rights today? We are also interested in papers that address the costs of social programs. These are some of the possibilities, but many other questions may be brought to the table. We encourage submissions based on historical approaches carried out by jurists, political scientists, historians, sociologists, and other professionals in fields that have particular focus on legal problems.

Situated in the socio-discoursal and socio-cultural approaches to LSP studies (Belcher 2004), this international conference engages with the dual objective of pursuing enquiry related to studies in FASP (fiction à substrat professionnel), a genre of fiction identified and codified by Michel Petit (1999) and Shaeda Isani (2004), on the one hand and, on the other, exploring new avenues of reflection regarding other narrative forms, both fictional and non-fictional of potential interest to ESP studies.

Both exhibitions explore the depiction of women in the margins of urban life – the prostitute, the model, working (class) women, and the women of the entertainment industry.

The European Union’s role in the last decades – and especially in the last few years – has evolved from mere economic cooperation between its Member States to an overtly outward projection of shared values and ideas. In the context of new changes in the global security environment and of the subsequent development of new tools and approaches in the European Union’s external action, including the first steps towards a new European Security Strategy, the Centro de Estudos Internacionais at Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL) is organizing an international conference, to be held in Lisbon, on May 23rd and 24th 2016. This interdisciplinary conference aims to understand the trajectories and potential of the EU as a global actor in areas related, but not limited, to security and defense.

This conference celebrates the opening of the V&A’s new Europe 1600-1815 Galleries. It will introduce some of the new patterns of living that laid the foundations for our modern world. The papers will be presented according to the three main themes that create a narrative structure for the displays and interpretation in the galleries: first, that, for the first time ever, Europeans systematically explored, exploited, and collected resources from Africa, Asia and the Americas in their art and design; second, that France took over from Italy as leader of fashion and art in the second half of the 17th century; and third, that ways of living came to resemble those we know today.

Geoarchaeology, defined as the application of geosciences and geographical methods to prehistory, archaeology, and history, is now widely applied to study key subjects such as occupation patterns, territory and site exploitation, palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironemental, and palaeogeographical changes, as well as anthropogenic impacts and system responses. The multidisciplinary and multiscalar dimensions of geoarchaeological approaches have encouraged continuous development and innovation of methods and approaches that have opened new possibilities for explorations in geographical sectors previously inaccessible, the development of large-scale data acquisitions and treatment, and also the development of microscopic scale analysis precision. This session will highlight global research in geoarchaeology with particular emphasis on innovative methods or cutting edge research using established approaches.

From Xenakis to the present: the Continuum in music and architecture

Since the Classical era and the Middle Ages, and in particular since Plato’s Timeus, the concept of continuum has preoccupied thinkers. In the early 20^th century, this notion was reactivated by the theory of relativity as well as other theories such as the uncertainty principle, changing our perception of the world, and consequently artistic discourse. We propose to examine where we are today in terms of the concept of continuum, both in theory and in practice. An interdisciplinary approach will enable us to evaluate the relevancy of this notion, comparing and contrasting it with other methodologies, during this international conference.
