Fachtagung - Studien zur Wissenschaft
We intend in this workshop to reconsider how new technologies flow and circulate around the globe. One cannot ignore the obvious fact that we are seeing the emergence of new technological and industrial centres which accompany the rapid redistribution of economic power around the world; but one should also take into account the fact that technology is – and has always been – flowing and circulating in much more unexpected ways than predicted by the old-fashioned diffusionist models which are still prevalent, even in these times of globalisation. By privileging in this workshop (and in our collective project) a comparative approach between three very different geographical regions – South Asia, the Middle East and Europe – we hope to be able to propose an approach to technological flow, which will be sufficiently global and comparative, for going beyond the specificities of any particular culture or society, and which may really better help us understand the dynamics of technological circulations and the processes by which technologies are reinvented in different locations. -

Local Politics, Global Impacts
Steps to a multi-disciplinary analysis of scales
The University of Chicago and the French Development Agency (AFD) are pleased to announce a conference to be held in Paris on 14th and 15th June 2012. The conference will be devoted to exploring the analysis of the global impacts of local politics and power relations.We call for papers that investigate domestic power relations, how local interest games generate international impacts, through what channels and mechanisms these impacts emerge, how local politics is redefined by global networks and discourses and whether current forms of international cooperation and global governance regimes are well or ill-adapted to these challenges. Along with a short C.V., proposals for contributions to the conference should be sent before 30th January 2012. -

Regimes of Value in Tourism: Concepts, Politics, Practices
The conference aims to explore different concepts of value that emerge in the social field of tourism. At a general level, we can distinguish here between value as conceptualized by different academic disciplines and value as lived, expressed, and embodied by various actors within tourism as practice and social field. Tourism is often considered a profit generating industry where the utility value paid by tourists is larger than the exchange value of products (in classical terms, the cost of production using labor, capital and land). It is an important element of the conference to discuss conceptions of value in tourism that transcend a strictly economic definition. In this sense we are interested, on the one hand, in the differentiated emotional, moral and ethical cultures by means of which tourists experience attractions and assign value. On the other hand, we wish to explore how various local, regional, national, international, and transnational actors and instances capture, conceptualize and assemble economic, political, cultural, spatial value associated with touristic places. -

The advent of the Web is one of the defining technological events of the twentieth-first century, yet its impact on the fundamental questions of philosophy has not yet been widely explored, much less systematized. We hope to provoke the properly philosophical question of whether there is a consistent new branch or practice of philosophy that can weave these changes to technology and society into a coherent whole and have a real social impact. -

L’enjeu de la perception dans la création contemporaine in situ
Ce colloque propose d’explorer le domaine particulier de la création artistique contemporaine in situ – Land Art, art environnemental, art public, performance – sous l’angle de l’analyse de la perception sensorielle, intellectuelle et esthétique, de l’étude de formes contextualisées / conceptualisées et de leurs modes de représentation. Nous analyserons les types de rapports que ces œuvres sur site entretiennent avec l’observateur, loin des lieux traditionnellement dédiés à l'art. Cette manifestation scientifique accompagne l’installation pérenne de la sculpture Avignon Locators de l’artiste américaine Nancy Holt dans les jardins du campus centre-ville de l’Université d’Avignon et des Pays de Vaucluse. Cette œuvre in situ, adaptée au site, est une réactivation de Missoula Ranch Locators – Vision Encompassed (Montana, 1972), installation majeure de Nancy Holt démantelée au début des années 2000. L’inauguration de l’œuvre, en présence de l’artiste, se déroulera lors du colloque et célèbrera les quarante ans de la création de Missoula Ranch Locators. -

The congress will be hosted by the University of Manchester with the support of Manchester City Council. This is the first world congress to be held in Britain since the initial meeting of the International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences in London in 1934. The Congress Agenda is being planned by a UK Organizing Committee which includes anthropologists working in all sub-fields of the discipline. -
