  The European space. Geo-economic balances and State powers in the long run

  In the construction of the European space(s) a crucial role has been played by economic actors and relations, which often overpass national borders and intertwin with the nature and roles of political powers and national States. Even well before the last globalization (or re-globalization), traditional government systems were pressed by the internationalization of economies: by centrifugal pushes, the need for external resources, or the emergence of new actors on the international stage in economic, technical, and social fields, that have increasingly influenced both the private and the public life. In more recent times, then, a new institutional framework developed at the supranational, European, level getting new functions and involving actors, such as trade unions, charities, business interests, scientific institutions, and churches, reinforcing the dynamics of cooperation, integration, and convergence beyond national borders.

  Languages, literatures and peace building

  Guaranteeing a peaceful climate in a restricted or relatively large space is a challenge, which is why it is almost impossible to list in an exhaustive manner the mechanisms likely to maintain harmony between humans and/or between Nations, as these means are sometimes beyond suspicion. At the same time, it would be tedious to want to list the factors likely to break the tranquility, the state of cohesion, and to generate misunderstandings, conflicts of various kinds and, finally, war. So, how can linguistics and linguistic dynamics (in all forms and manifestations, including literature) be at the origin of social/interhuman, inter-intra-community, inter-State, inter-religious tensions...? And, how could they resolve the said crises and conflict situations? Which linguistic dynamics emerge from these? This is the challenge of this project.

  Patriarcal-Pact

  Coloniality and the Left-Wing Sexism

  In this book-project we propose an exploratory/reflective decolonial investigation to locate the intersubjective structural/hegemonic, capitalist-historical, socio-economic, cultural and political relational process that caracterises a Patriarcal-Pact solidly operational throughout women and men’s lived experiences. That is, we propose to scrutinise the enduring and reiterative operational “colonialities of power/political; of knowledge/epistemic; of being/ontological; together with coloniality of gender, of doing, of nature, of sensibility/aesthetic.” (Perrier et al., 2022, 3). Through this we intend to deploy a new-decolonial-ethic-programme to tackle the way these colonialities continue to oppress and annihilate the cultural, intellectual/academic, artistic, social and political production of the subalternised and oppressed subjects here positionned as the racialised and gendered Black, white, “mixed-race” women, trans-women/men and TBN-transgender/non-binary from the Global South/Global North.

It provides an interdisciplinary forum for emerging and independent artists and scholars by bringing together studio, art history, cultural studies, theory and criticism, creative writing, and related fields.   Jokes can be tasty, cheesy, crusty, corny, sour, saucy, stale, canned, elaborate. Moreover, humour can demonstrate good or bad taste. What is there to understand from this affinity between humour and food metaphors? The international conference “Tasting Funny?” will examine this question. We welcome papers on any humorous cultural production (literature, music, film, graphic arts, sculpture, architecture, design, fashion, advertisement, etc.), from any time period or language area. We also welcome papers on the translatability of jokes, whether food-related jokes or ones that would be unequally tasteful in different cultures.

  Developing Societies and the Sustainable Development Goals

  Challenges and Opportunities

  In 2015, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030 were defined. The goals include the eradication of poverty, access to quality and equitable education for all, environmental protection, and health for all. While the SDGs target the world in general, as each country faces at least one of the obstacles to development, it appears that developing countries, particularly those in Africa and South America, are the most concerned. This panorama raises questions to which researchers could provide an answer: how to make the SDGs intelligible to Africans and other Third World countries so that they can easily appropriate them? How much consideration is given to the multiple and diverse contexts among developing countries in the conceptualisation of the SDGs?

  ASMCF Annual Conference 2023

  The 2023 Association for the study of modern and contemporary France (ASMCF) annual conference will seek to explore the concept of spatiality: the physical and social dimensions of space and how they shape our experiences, identities, and cultures. The theme builds on last year’s conference on “presence, absence, hybridity”  and interrogates the occupation of spaces as a means to understand modern and contemporary French and Francophone cultures and identities. This is of particular importance at a time when people are (re)occupying spaces that had been restricted during the covid-19 pandemic and reflecting on the new relation to space brought about by this crisis.

  Medieval Borders and the Environment

  This volume, provisionally titled Medieval Borders and the Environment, will be submitted to Brill to be included in the new series “Elements, Nature, Environment: Multidisciplinary Perspectives from the Ancient to the Early Modern World” edited by Dr. Marilina Cesario and Dr. Andreas Lammer. The volume’s goal is to provide a venue for interdisciplinary research on the time period between about 500 and 1500 or slightly later. It intends to promote study on underrepresented parts of the medieval world, broadly construed, as well as articles that examine interconnections across regions and cultures. Proposals for essays in english are warmly welcomed on the topic “borders, the elements, and the environment”.

  Ukraine Under Fire: The Visual Arts in Ukraine and Abroad Since 2014

  To say that Ukraine has a complicated relationship with Russia is an understatement: the region was under direct rule in the imperial period, experienced a period of freedom after 1917, followed by repressive rule through large periods of the Soviet era, and then regained independence in 1991. Now, Ukraine faces Russian hostility and the violation of its territorial integrity, which began in February 2014 with the occupations of the Crimea and Donbas region. I solicit abstracts from scholars, critics, gallerists, and artists whose work reflects upon the role of the visual arts during the current conflict in this region. Their topics should explore how artists have dealt with the Russian invasion and other forms of hostilities in recent years.

This issue aims to contribute to ongoing discussions in decolonial thought and visual culture studies regarding the potentialities of othered approaches to image-making beyond Western-centred conceptualizations of the image and its visualities. Drawing upon the ideas of decolonial aesthesis, the right to look, and Indigenous visual sovereignty, this issue welcomes submissions addressing the Indigenization of visual culture as a means for decolonizing the fields of visual culture studies and contemporary art studies.
