  South-Asian Diasporic Circulations and Cultures: transdisciplinary approaches

  Ce colloque international réunira à Bordeaux, les 21 et 22 mars 2011, des chercheurs travaillant sur le monde indien et les diasporas sud-asiatiques à partir de perspectives disciplinaires variées (historique, géographique, sociologique, anthropologique, ou encore musicologique). Cette rencontre inter et transdisciplinaire est organisée par l’EA CLIMAS (Cultures et Littératures des Mondes Anglophones) et l’UMR ADES (Aménagement, Développement, Environnement, Santé et Sociétés). This international conference will take place in Bordeaux on 21 and 22 March, 2011 and will gather scholars studying the Indian world and the South-Asian diasporas from various scientific perspectives (history, geography, sociology, anthropology, or musicology). This cross- and trans-disciplinary event is organised by E.A. CLIMAS (Cultures et Littératures des Mondes Anglophones) and U.M.R. ADES (Aménagement, Développement, Environnement, Santé et Sociétés).

  European Solidarity with Chile, 1970-1990

  During the Cold War, Western Europe witnessed the emergence of various social movements with an orientation to Latin America. One of the most important mobilizations for Latin America was without any doubt the movement in solidarity with Chile, which already emerged in support for the Allende government (1970-1973) but especially gained strength after the military coup of 1973. Indeed, the overthrew of the Unidad Popular government in September 1973 and the subsequent repression by the Chilean military dictatorship inspired a wave of protest and solidarity in Western Europe, which lasted until the end of the regime of Pinochet in 1990. Support for the Chilean resistance and for the many refugees which had crossed the ocean was concretized in the establishment of hundreds of Chile solidarity committees across Western Europe and in the action of a variety of other organizations, including trade unions, church groups and NGO’s. The Chilean political opposition and refugees played an active role in this solidarity, although internal political tension proved to be an important obstacle for the Western European solidarity movements.

  Digital Humanities Seminar 2010 : Scholarly Editions

  This presentation deals with the digital edition of D’Alembert’s eulogy of Bossuet. This text is highly difficult to edit since we have to cope with a printed edition published in two stages and two successive manuscript versions showing various types and levels of corrections.We will explain first these editorial issues and the research problems they are connected to. Then we will expose the way a digital edition could better bring solutions than a traditional printed edition through a series of features showing the genesis process of the text, from the manuscripts to the published versions. Finally we will present some software which makes it possible to edit this text as well as other eulogies with similar characteristics.

  Seeking Peace in the ake of waWr. European Transitions after 1945

  Les années 1944 à 1946 sont celles de la libération de l’Europe, entendue à la fois comme l’évacuation des territoires occupés par les forces du Troisième Reich et la fin de la guerre, exception faite, bien entendu, du sort de l’Allemagne. Elles ouvrent également une ère nouvelle, dont les caractères distinctifs sont la recherche de nouveaux équilibres politiques et sociaux et la mise en place de l’ordre stalinien en Europe de l’Est. En septembre 2009, un premier workshop à Berlin a permis de tester certaines hypothèses. Le workshop de Barcelone organisé en partenariat avec la Casa de Velazquez, entend poursuivre ces premiers travaux entrepris dans le cadre du programme ANR-OME.

  Monuments, Documents: Interpretation and Overinterpretation

  Une opinion courante aujourd’hui veut qu’il n’y ait pas un instant où l’on ne cesse d’interpréter. Toute expérience d’une chose pourvue de sens nous placerait devant un cas d’interprétation et un produit de celle-ci. La question urgente pour la constitution d’un savoir « scientifique » est donc : y a-t-il une frontière entre interprétation et surinterprétation ? Autant l’interprétation semble légitime, autant la surinterprétation est-elle rejetée comme illégitime. Est-ce parce qu’elle apparaît comme une violence faite à l’objet que l’on cherche à comprendre ? Comme une brusquerie contre le consensus sur lequel la discipline en question est fondée ? Par ailleurs, si tout n’est qu’interprétation, y a-t-il encore place dans nos disciplines pour un réel progrès scientifique, et de quelle nature est-il ? (meilleure compréhension de l’objet, affinement des méthodes ?

  Le 37ème congrès de la Société d’histoire coloniale française se tiendra à Toronto du 2 au 4 juin 2011. Il aura lieu sur le campus central de l’Université de Toronto. Le thème principal portera sur « Liens et continuités entre les premier et second empires coloniaux français », mais comme toujours, des propositions de communication sur d’autres aspects de l’histoire coloniale française peuvent aussi nous être adressées. La Société encourage des chercheurs de toute discipline à soumettre des propositions. Les interventions ne doivent pas être déjà publiées, ni présentées ou programmées à un autre colloque. Chaque intervenant disposera de 20 minutes de présentation.

  Power of Spirit and Imagination in 17th Century

  In this workshop, scholars from different disciplines will work together to study the early modern imagination. In particular, we are interested in the relation between general conceptions of the imagination at the time and more specific and controversial ideas of a creative, active and forceful imagination. This powerful imagination was dependent on ‘spirit’ in its different meanings in the early modern period (human spirit, demons, animal and other spirits, spirit of nature, etc.), resulting in a rich variety of opinions. These ideas of an active imagination and of powerful spirits, in their full complexity and diversity, were transmitted between philosophy, literature, medicine, the sciences, witchcraft, demonology as well as religion, and the workshop aims at unearthing the exchanges between these various fields.

  Cocoon communities: Togetherness in the 21st century

  In this volume, we wish to look at a special case of togetherness, which we propose to call cocoon communities. Cocoon communities neither represent nor correspond to the ideal-type of community. At first sight, they do not seem to have much in common with communal characteristics. Such communities may actually be invisible for outsiders, yet a closer look might reveal some substantial similarities with ‘canonical’ forms of community.

  Revisiting the "first" Gilded Age

  Business and politics in the late nineteenth-century United States

  La période de l'histoire des États-Unis allant de la fin de la guerre de Sécession au tournant du XXe siècle a connu un très profond renouvellement historiographique, à tel point que nombre d'historiens remettent en cause le terme de « Gilded Age » (Âge du Toc) souvent associé à ce moment. Malgré tout, ces réinterprétations oublient ce qui était au cœur de l'expression elle-même: à savoir les nouvelles relations, vues comme problématiques, entre des élus politiques à la tête d'un État fédéral renforcé par la guerre, et des hommes d'affaires dont le poids et la fonction sont transformées par l'industrialisation très rapide du pays. Nous cherchons donc des propositions de communications pour une journée d'études qui explorent, à la lumière de nouvelles recherches et de cette nouvelle historiographie, les liens entre monde des affaires et monde politique aux États-Unis, mais également dans d'autres pays (dans une perspective comparatiste) dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle.
