  The Arab uprisings lead to many political and sociological analyses but few of them consider the spatial and territorial consequences of the misnamed Arab Springs. This international conference aims to explore this turn in the Middle East and the Sahel: five years after the birth of the South Soudan state and the beginning of the Arab uprisings, what changes have occurred with respect to borders? Can the collapses of some states be seen as the end of borders or the disintegration of national spaces and the outline of a new enduring and alternative territorial order?

  A place for places: current trends and challenges in the development and use of geo-historical gazetteers

  Digital Humanities 2016 pre-conference Workshop

  The 1^st edition of the workshop “A place for places” will hold in conjunction with the “2016 Digital Humanities conference” in Kraków, Poland. The present workshop aims to investigate the latest developments of geo-historical gazetteers and their impact in natural language processing and digital humanities studies. In particular the workshop will deal with crucial problems concerning the geo-spatial models of representation for ancient places, and the management of temporal information for geographic features in general. Current projects concerning the publication of geo-historical data as Linked Open Data, as well as their exploitation for annotating and enriching texts will also be discussed, alongside with more theoretical issues on vocabularies and ontologies.

  The brains that pull the triggers

  The transformation of groups of previously nonviolent individuals into repetitive killers of defenseless members of society has been a recurring phenomenon throughout history. This apparent transition of large numbers of seemingly normal, “ordinary” individuals, to perpetrators of extreme atrocities is one of the most striking variants of human behavior, but often appear incomprehensible to victims and bystanders and in retrospect even to the perpetrators themselves and to society in general. This transition is characterized by a set of symptoms and signs for which a common syndrome has been proposed, Syndrome E (Fried, Lancet, 1997). The purpose of such designation is not to medicalize this form of human behavior, but to provide a framework for future discussion and multidisciplinary discourse and for potential insights that might lead to early detection and prevention.

In this context that made the Jewish studies a well distinguished discipline, we wish to focus on an aspect that has never been studied systematically and has never been subject to a methodological and comparative synthesis: the patrimonial transmission.

  This conference intends to continue the tradition of the Hispanic-Dutch-Belgian meetings and will bring together a number of established and early-career researchers working in the field of the institutional history of the Habsburg Low Countries from the 16^th to the 18^th centuries. It aims to draw attention to a broad range of political, cultural, religious, legal, and military institutions by focusing on the enriching approaches that have shaped historical research on institutional history in the past few decades. At the same time, it hopes to bring into the limelight some exciting new (and often interdisciplinary) perspectives that characterize current research in the field.

  A preliminary workshop

  The importance of the concepts of "heroes" and "leaders" for the development of national movements is reflected by the vast scientific attention paid to them, unwittingly pushing other players to the background. But at least as crucial for the success and failure of national movements are the less well-known and less celebrated advocates of the cause or "protagonists", engaged in the dissemination and transfer of cultural and political ideas, acting as go-between "top-down" and "bottom-up", and actively turning them into reality.

  The Centre Walras-Pareto is organizing a workshop on the history of wages. The workshop will take place at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), 29-30 September 2016. Much has been written on wages within economics. In his classical account of the history ofwage theory, Dunlop (1957) refers to three time-periods: the wage-fund theory domination,the rise of marginal productivity distribution theory, and the “contemporary setting”, startingin the 1930s and characterized by a diversity of theoretical arguments; but much has changed.

  Critical Psycholawgy: Dialogue at modern times between legal and psychological sciences

  Links between psychology and law rightly raise more and more scientific awareness. The human being, as the common object of this two fields, is studied from both an individual and a social perspective. This stream is an invitation to build an interface and exchange between clinical psychology, cross cultural psychology, justice and law through a critical perspective. This critical approach can be reached with a psychoanalytical lecture of society. This stream is an invitation to an interdisciplinary dialogue to open discussions in a world in perpetual motion. We are looking for papers on those topics: Psychocriminology, Critical Psychology, Psychoanalysis, Post-colonial and Critical historical studies.

  Cognition Verbs

  Modality, evidentiality and cognition

  We will explore cognition verbs from a cross-linguistic perspective. The data from a sample of languages will enable us to examine the interaction between language and cognition, the evolution patterns of cognition verbs and the near-synonymity of phrases such as I think, I guess or I suppose. The keynote speaker Jan Nuyts (university of Antwerp) will present historical data that questions the origin of the parenthetical uses of mental state verbs, and allows us to reinvestigate the questions of grammaticalisation and subjectification.

  Méthodes en prosodie et recherches sur l’intonation : données, théories et transcription

  École d’été Prosodie 2016

  L’école d’été Prosodie 2016 permettra le regroupement de chercheurs autour des aspects théoriques et pratiques qui animent les recherches actuelles en prosodie. L’école sera organisée autour de conférences le matin et de tutoriels l’après-midi (où les participants mettront en applications les concepts discutés le matin lors des sessions de conférences) et manipuleront des données cliniques (les participants pourront venir avec leur propres données et questions afin d’animer les discussions). Cette école est ouverte aux étudiants de troisième cycle ainsi qu’aux chercheurs intéressés par les aspects théoriques et pratiques des recherches en prosodique. Cette école est à la fois pensée pour les chercheurs qui travaillent déjà sur la  prosodie et l’intonation et qui approfondir d’avantage certains aspects particuliers, mais aussi pour les chercheurs qui souhaitent mieux comprendre comment incorporer et intégrer la prosodie à leur travail.

  Society for French Studies Postgraduate Conference 2016

  Protest is an intrinsic part of human culture, which enables subjects to express their dissatisfaction with existing social structures and hegemonic hierarchies of power. Protests have occurred across time periods and contexts, and have taken numerous different forms, ranging from personal expressions of discontent to united movements for revolutionary change. Protests can be individual or collective, personal or political, spontaneous or carefully planned, but they are generally orientated towards destabilising the status quo and establishing new modes of existence. Over the ages, political, social and cultural protests have successfully toppled authoritarian regimes, exposed and confronted dominant imbalances of power, and ameliorated conditions for disenfranchised members of society.

  The Left and Nationalism in Europe

  The tragic attacks in Paris on 7 January and 13 November 2015 have engendered vivid debates about national identity and national culture in France, and accelerated the promotion of patriotism by the socialist government. At the European level, whereas the death of nations has been predicted along with the triumph of globalisation, nations and nationalism make a spectacular come back in public debates, and put most European left-wing parties in an embarrassing position. In the aftermath of world war two, the Left gradually became suspicious of references to the nation, traditionally associated with rightwing ideologies. Yet in a time of identity debates and persistent collective attachment to nations, patriotism, sovereignty and nationalism are also increasingly used as political arguments.

L'accent sera mis sur les langues française, espagnole et allemande, sur l'influence des différents contextes nationaux sur la forme des écrits littéraires nés de la guerre, ainsi que sur la valorisation de textes peu connus du grand public.
