Eyes High Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Canadian Municipal Barometer (CMB) is a major research partnership that brings together academic researchers and non-academic organizations across Canada to understand and improve municipaldemocracy. Our research includes annual surveys of mayors and councillors in 1,000 municipalities, large recurring surveys of the Canadian public, and in-depth qualitative research. Alongside its academic outputs, the partnership will also create numerous outputs for practitioners and the wider public, including the Local Democracy Lab, a new resource for dataaccess and data analysis for community leaders and elected representatives. The CMB postdoc fellow will have access to exceptionally large survey datasets of both political elites and the Canadian public and will have the opportunity to design and implement survey modules for both surveys.

The conference promotes the participation of Romani scholars and professionals including those who took part in such programs earlier and aims to facilitate a knowledge exchange amongst various scholars and professionals from educational and social sciences.

A century of educational change: Global trends and reform circulations in the 20th century

This hybrid event aims to present the World Education Reform Database (WERD). The Database gathers educational reforms reported by States over the 20th century. It currently encompasses 10,955 reforms from 189 countries and territories. Recently, data from the UNESCO-IBE's archives center were compiled to complete this massive database. This event aims to enhance reflexions on the use of such data into ongoing research program and practices, introduce to methodological challenges and potentiality, and provide concrete case studies that contributes to the historicization of intergovernmental cooperation.

The Normalized, the Normalizers and Their Cinemas

Czechoslovak and Soviet Films of the 1970s

In both cinemas—that of the “normalizer” and that of the “normalized”—the political and economic stagnation reinforced by stochastic censorship and disillusioned society often leads to peculiar examples of mismatched ideology and aesthetics allowing for viewing them as accidental camp classics today. What structural changes do Czechoslovak studios undergo in the wake of the Warsaw Pact invasion? What thematic and aesthetic choices can be attributed to their moment in film history on both sides of the Iron Curtain? How does the soaring number of light entertainment genre like melodrama, comedy or musical correlate with the current events? Last but not least, the questions of actors’ agency in the face of state repression and censorship, of reevaluation of the immense corpus of films created during the late-Communist era feel relevant in Russian and Central European cinema and culture in general today.

Forgeries, Fakes and Counterfeits in Print Culture: Texts, Editions, Copies

The printed book, for centuries the most powerful medium for the circulation of ideas, is particularly central to this discourse, and it is no surprise that readers of all times as well as specialists are constantly challenged by the wealth of literary forgeries, fake imprints, fake authors, and material counterfeits. We are far, however, from an established definition of these notions, especially in their differences and overlaps. This two-day symposium aims to explore the topic at three different levels. Texts addresses textual forgeries and manipulations of authorship; editions concentrates on false imprints, ‘refreshed’ title-pages, and editorial piracy, including that of written and illustrated paratext; copies looks into the alteration of individual specimens of an edition.

Unpacking the Narratives of Circulating Exhibitions 1900–1952

The MMD Museum Materials Discussions Journal welcomes article submissions to be published in a special theme issue exploring traveling exhibitions. The call for papers aims to encourage a transdisciplinary discussion on how touring exhibitions contributed to the knowledge growth within the circuit of arts, decorative arts, handicrafts, fashion, and design. The MMD issue aims to address the topic within a broader framework, providing new insights or a different way of understanding artifacts, people, and ideas detached from their original contexts, how and why they circulated, and the ways specific ideas, forms, and displays were perceived out of their original context. The chronological boundaries range from the beginning of the 20th century to 1952 (inception of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service).

Mémoire pour l’avenir, nostalgie et utopie dans les imaginaires socioculturels des « Europes de l’Europe » contemporaines

En analysant, une décennie après la fin de la Guerre Froide, les changements survenus au cours du dernier quart du siècle passé sur le plan de l’expérience et des perceptions du temps. Le caractère multidimensionnel de la mémoire historique et ses rapports avec l’avenir dans le contexte des « transformations sans précédent » entraînées par le progrès technologique et par les défis climatiques représentent également des axes majeurs dans les recherches récentes en historiographie et en philosophie de l’histoire. À l’intersection de la mémoire historique avec celle politique, la nostalgie fonctionne comme « une épée à deux tranchants », en ce qu’elle semble être tant « un antidote émotionnel pour la politique », que « le meilleur instrument politique ». Les chercheurs de divers domaines sont encouragés à soumettre des propositions explorant plusieurs thèmes liés à la mémoire, à la nostalgie et à l’utopie en Europe post-Guerre Froide.

The archaeological work in the Greek settlements of the Black Sea and their environs during the last decade

Black Sea archaeology has always captivated the interest of scholars, because of its unique topography and diachronically multi-ethnic historical landscape.The previous decade was a particularly challenging period for archaeological research worldwide due to the new realities imposed by the pandemic, the extraordinary political and socio-economic factors, and the long-lasting crisis in the Humanities and Arts. In spite of all this, excavations, systematic surveys, remote sensing and geophysical prospections, were undertaken in numerous coastal and inland sites along the Euxine, while equally productive were research projects on specific monuments or aspects of the material culture. Aiming to bring forth the latest advances accomplished in the field, the Department of Black Sea Studies at the Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, are organizing an International Conference on The Archaeological Work in the Greek Settlements of the BlackSea and their Environs during the Last Decade.

Consisting of about 120,000 items, the vast collection of photographs of the Brussels Royal Museums of Art and History has never been studied thoroughly. This project aims at the assessment, study and disclosure of this collection. This function is part of the FED-tWIN programme of the Federal Science Policy, which aims to promote sustainable cooperation between the ten Federal Scientific Institutions and the 11 Belgian universities through the funding of joint research profiles. In this case, its is a joint initiative of the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels and Ghent University. The position consists of a part-time position at the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels combined with a part-time position at Ghent University. It combines research tasks, educational tasks, organization of exhibitions, project leading tasks.

(Digital) Retrospectives on Historiography from Africa. Decolonization, the African press, and the uses of knowledge

Journal « Práticas da História »

This special issue of Práticas da História reflects on contemporary epistemological possibilities and constraints in the writing of history. Therefore, it welcomes both contributions that dwell on African journals (scholarly, literary, artistic and ephemeral periodicals) from the 1950s to 1980s, and on the histories behind said periodicals. We look forward to contributions that explore different and contested visions of decolonization and future-making for the African continent and its diaspora. We also invite articles investigating differently situated historiographies from Africa: that use local vernacular by incorporating idiom, local imagery, myth and folklore; that relate to the present or the deep past. We also encourage more nuanced takes on the “nationalist historiography” that when viewed as a monolith was so dominant at the time.

Energy transitions and economic thinking in German-speaking territories, 1800-2000

ETRANHET explores how economic ideas on energy have developed in various market-economy contexts around the world, since the first waves of industrialization at the turn of the 19th century. It particularly addresses three key questions: (1) How did past economists (broadly defined) conceive the connection between energy, growth, and development? (2) How did they consider innovation and technological change in energy affairs? (3) How did economic discourse on energy influence policymaking, and vice versa? Areas covered by the project include Continental Europe, the British Isles, North and Latin America, South-East Asia, and some areas under colonial control. This workshop will be an opportunity to look more closely at German-speaking territories within Continental Europe.

“Práticas da História” journal

This special issue of Práticas da História is interested in receiving contributions, referring to colonial and post-colonial African contexts. It is important to better understand what is happening in different African countries, at the level of the Academy but also in other spaces where social memory and history confront each other, and how political, ideological, economic and linguistic factors interfere in those situations. In the case of the former Portuguese colonies, which will soon celebrate 50 years of independence, there are additional factors, such as the later end of colonial rule and the delay in historiography about Africa that occurred until recent decades, both in Portugal and in Brazil.
