    Forgotten Journalists

Lived experiences and professional identities in the past

Liberas, UGent, the Laboratoire des pratiques et des identités journalistiques (ReSIC-ULB) and CAMille (ULB/KBR) are organizing between 5 and 7 June a three-day international colloquium on the life stories and careers of "forgotten journalists". The history of journalism has often focused on a limited number of famous individuals. Behind these big names are many journalists whose names and work have not made it into the canon. But to capture the full diversity of the journalistic field, these careers and lives need to be recovered.

    Late Medieval Cardinals Between Crises

From the Western Schism to the V Lateran Council (1378-1517)

The history of the cardinalate, which stretches from the 11th century to the present day, went through one of the most volatile phases of its development between the beginning of the Western Schism (1378) and the close of the Fifth Lateran Council (1517). This congress aims to work and reflect on these cardinals, both as a group, gathered in the Sacred College, and in their individual dimensions, as lords, members of lineages, pastors, reformers, conciliarists, centres of courts, families and networks, diplomats and representatives of nations, patrons of the arts, among others.  The cross-sectional interest of this congress stems from the desire to feed the historiographical renewal that has been taking place over the last two decades on the medieval cardinalate, seeking to bring together researchers who are dedicated to its study, regardless of the angle of approach they may take.

Ecological Grief and Mourning in the Literature and the Arts in the Anglophone World

This conference proposes to explore the concept of ecological grief and the fast-growing body of theoretical work that is developing around it against the background of the ongoing sixth-mass extinction and biodiversity loss. With this conference, we also wish to think about the longer history of ecological grief from the eighteenth century onwards, including by exploring some of the consequences of the Industrial Revolution. Is nature grievable? How do we grieve for it? What is the role of writers and artists in this individual and collective process? While to some, environmental grief gives way to desolation or an irredeemable sense of melancholy, others view it as a form of resilience or even a spur to action, a source of activism in art.

    Differential mobilities in contemporary cities

Journal "Forum Sociológico" – Special Issue

Although the study of barriers and inequality is central to understanding the dynamics of mobility and the structuring of urban life, we consider it relevant to also advance in understanding the strategies that these groups build to face the challenges of urban life. Different populations experience varying degrees of freedom or restriction when travelling, depending on their social, economic and spatial position. Depending on the characteristics of the individuals, but especially the social groups in which they are inserted, it is possible to observe creative mobility strategies to face the barriers imposed by the organisation of urban space, inequality or transport policies.
