  Visualising Nature

  Making Images and the Production of Biological Knowledge from Early Modern Natural History to Contemporary Life Sciences

  The 2007 summer school will explore the relationship between making and knowing in the biological sciences as mediated by visual culture from the Renaissance to the modern day. We intend to focus on three interrelated themes. One theme concerns craft practices and the development of visualising technologies. The second theme concerns the historical relation between theory and image in the formation of scientific arguments.Third, there are the cognitive claims about reality that are made through images.

  L’élargissement de l’accès à l’enseignement supérieur depuis trois ou quatre décennies, dans les pays du Maghreb comme du Machrek arabe, s’est traduit par une évolution très importante de professions dont le statut était fondé autant sur la nature des savoirs détenus, que sur la mission qui leur était conférée dans le projet de développement. Le présent numéro de Savoir, Travail et Société voudrait rassembler quelques contributions significatives rendant compte des évolutions en cours dans le contexte particulier des pays arabes, tout en s’attachant à rappeler les conditions historiques d’émergence et de structuration des professions de niveau supérieur et intermédiaire, fondées sur l’acquisition d’un savoir spécialisé. Echéances: décembre 2006 et mars 2007

  The Museum of the History of Science, which houses a collection ofscientific instruments of international importance, has been awarded aDesignation Challenge Fund grant by the Museums, Libraries and ArchivesCouncil for a research project entitled ‘Small Worlds’. It is now invitingapplications for two posts of Researcher for the project, one of whom willconcentrate on cataloguing microscopes, the other microscopical specimens.The officers will be involved with mounting on-line presentations of thecollections and a special exhibition. The successful candidates willpossess relevant degrees and a proven interest in the technical andcultural history of early scientific instruments. The officer formicroscopical specimens is likely to have a relevant background in thebiological sciences.
