Women, Leadership and Armed Groups in Africa and the Middle East

    Journal of Gender Studies

This special issue of Journal of Gender Studies focuses on the role of women in leadership positions in militias and defense groups, paying special attention on Africa and the Middle East to measure the empirical variation between different terrains of inquiry to be analysed through two different theorical frameworks: the Gendered Theory of Rebellion and the Donminant/Power Theory. The rationale for the special issue is the attempt to analyse and evaluate the experience of women in leadership positions, their motivations for violence and the degree to which their decision-making and influence in the perpetration of violence impacts their definition of feminity.

Expressivity, Bodies and Language in the Twenty-First Century

This two-day event will consider all contributions addressing “in the flesh” effects and characteristics of language, highlighting the way bodies can be affected by – or pulled into – linguistic forms, whether negatively, positively, or else, with an eye to assessing in turn the impact of such bodily effects on decision-making and/or state of mind (Bottineau 2008). The sources of analysis need to be language-based (discourse of any genre or interactions of any kind) but the corpora can be found on a wide variety of media (online discourse, forums, interviews, fictional discourse, etc.).

    Joachim Trier

    Urban Memories

Joachim Trier is one of the most internationally acclaimed contemporary Nordic filmmakers, and his cinema is a particularly interesting subject for researchers in film studies and Nordic studies. His cinema is an invitation to explore Norwegian culture, as it allows us to discover Oslo and its contemporary art scene. What's more, he tackles Norwegian social issues that have an international echo: the issues of sexuality today, our relationship with drink or melancholy, freedom of expression and lifestyle choices, etc. In this regard, he has developed one of the finest artworks to catch the urban individual. This international conference is an opportunity to bring together a group of international experts in Paris.

Heritage Cities and Exclusion. Places, Spaces and Thresholds of the “Other”

The Journal of Architectural Design and History, n.4 (2025)

The fourth issue of The Journal of Architectural Design and History intends to explore the theme of exclusion in its various forms, investigating the relationship between the historical city and the architectures that, with their spaces and forms, define places of urban exclusion in different historical, geographical, political and social contexts. We invite the authors to investigate the subject of exclusion in its broadest sense: from the most traditional exclusionary categories (e.g. prisons, asylums, hospices, hospitals) to more lateral and less explored interpretations, which also investigate the theme of exclusion in terms of exclusivity, gender, ethnicity, census and lifestyle differences, or the absence of life (e.g. special schools, holiday villages and resorts, suburbs and banlieues, brothels, cemeteries).

    The Language(s) of Freedom(s)

Research topic for Visegrad Scholarship at Open Society Archives Academic (OSA) year 2024/2025

The criticism about infringements of academic freedom, or about the radicalization of autocratic powers cannot do without an understanding of the loaded vocabularies of freedoms in the past and present, for both societies and their elites. A complex rethinking and recontextualization of the thinkers of liberties, including from the Cold War era, must also be undertaken, together with the truth-seeking adventures and projects from the past. We invite historians, researchers, political scientists, sociologists and socially engaged artists to reflect on the past uses of the languages of (attaining) freedoms by taking cues from the Blinken OSA collections. The applicants are encouraged to reflect on the connections as well as on the differences between current times and the past by following some recommended sub-topics listed below.

Emerging Technologies in Communication: Best Practices and Theoretical Frameworks for Professional Success

Communication practitioners are now faced with difficult questions regarding which of emerging technologies can substantially improve their workflow and which only add to the technological noise interfering with the essence of their work. Even if productivity considerations have encouraged the adoption of Artificial Inteligence systems in many areas of professional communication, it is still not certain which tasks can be safely delegated to the technological systems, if one takes into account their oscillating levels of accuracy. As concerns for end-product quality increase in many areas, it becomes clear that most of these new options need a substantial amount of supervision and correction on the part of human professionals. The conference call is thus emphasizing the need to examine theories, concepts, ideas for best practices, and attempts to understand the changing parameters for professional success.

Reproductive Justice and Its Discontents: Recent Representations in American Popular Culture

    “RSAJournal”, 36 (September 2025)

RSAJournal, the journal of the Italian Association of American Studies (AISNA) seeks contributions for its n. 36 issue (September 2025) for both its General and Special Sections. Reproductive justice—defined as the right to have children, to not have children, and to parent—has always confronted praxes of power and control, which include the regulation of many issues such as expected gender roles, sexual behavior, abortion, family formation, adoption, reproductive assistive technology, and surrogacy. We invite contributions from different disciplines considering how popular culture shapes our attitudes about reproductive justice.
