Moguls, Go-betweens and Smugglers: Film Distributors and their Networks during the Twentieth Century
This workshop aims at revisiting the history of film importers/exporters and distributors throughout the 20th century by examining the social inscription of their trade. Moguls, go-betweens and/or smugglers, film traders were main actors in determining the value of films, building film markets, bringing out audiences by giving them (or not) access to the films. Yet, the history of cinema has long ignored the figure of the distributor, too bland to obscure the ethereal figure of the author, too close to the limelight to interest those, less numerous, researching “those wonderful people out there in the dark,” the audience.

International Association on Work in Agriculture’s Webinars
The International Association on Work in Agriculture (IAWA) proposes a webinar to share with you the knowledge and current research on the place of work and employment in value chains’ and food systems’ transformations. The idea is to move forward discussions on the theme, having following key question: how do strategies and mechanisms for value chain and food systems transformations address different work and employment issues? Starting with an overview of the thematic, from scientometric and conceptual points of view, the webinar will bring together experts to present their experience on the subject, from the North and the South, and different contexts and chain designs.

Beyond Early Cinema: Persistence of Travelling Cinema Throughout the Twentieth Century
This workshop will explore travelling cinema practises on a global scale in their historical, material and cultural diversity and will look at the ways in which they interfere with the communal identities of audiences. How communities – understood as porous, linguistic, ethnic, religious groups, crossed by various social and cultural dynamics – structured travelling cinema audiences and, conversely, how travelling cinema screening venues created, reinforced or perturbed community identities? The time span adopted goes from the 1920s to the end of the 20th century, up to the moment when television got rooted in the daily spectatorial practices and the VCR player developed (a point in time that differs according to local media histories).

Venice, a Mediterranean regional power
Economic, maritime and political perspectives, 1669 – 1797
The Mediterranean has always been at the heart of Venice’s interests during the Early Modern Period. A main source of its prosperity, the Inner Sea maintained its vital role even after the “northern invasions”, the battle of Lepanto and the “downturn” of the 17th century. This seminar aims to explore the relationship between Venice and the Mediterranean between the loss of Crete, the last major dominion of Venetian maritime empire in 1669, and the end of the Republic in 1797.

Napoleon’s Legacy in Culture, Art, and Heritage, 1821–2021
Napoleon Bonaparte died exactly two hundred years ago on a small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. He had spent the last six years of his life in exile on St Helena, removed from political and military power, in the unusual situation of being able to try to shape and preserve his own posthumous legacy. He was, in a way, phenomenally successful. Napoleon is an instantly recognisable name to this day, and despite growing efforts in recent years to critically revise his reputation and highlight his role in issues such as the reinstatement of slavery, he has largely managed to escape the same level of historical censure as other infamous military dictators. This is perhaps partly because his name has become such an adaptable brand, standing for an entire era of people, places, and events, as well as a full two centuries’ worth of art, craft, and consumer commodities. While other events marking the bicentenary of Napoleon’s death have weighed his contributions to legislative, political, and military reform, less work has been done to confront his vast material, visual, and cultural legacy. This workshop therefore brings together researchers and museum and heritage professionals to reflect on the enduring material and visual legacy of Napoleon, what our interpretation and use of it means for the future, as well as how it affects our understanding of the past.

Freedom of expression and freedom of creation in the Central American isthmus

Deontology, empirical approaches to research in the arts and media

Political Mobilization in the US: New Stakes and Evolutions

Transition, Displacement and Circulation of Objects: Visible and Unseen
This colloquium aims to inquire into the meanings ascribed to, and produced by, the material objects in course of their travel, displacement, circulation, transition in time and space. We suggest to discuss the phenomenology of transitional objects and their performative power; to understand how the meanings of these objects are anchored in their materiality and visibility, how they are communicated by the historical references they evoke, and tightened with the identity of communities that see or ignore them

Estimating, Locating, and Comparing Mental Disorders in the Second Part of the Twentieth Century
Psychiatric Epidemiology in Historical Perspective
Psychiatric epidemiology – the study of the distribution of mental disorders within a population – emerged on the scientific scene during the second half of the 20th century. However, unlike the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and psychoanalysis, psychiatric epidemiology has yet to be studied by historians, largely due to the fact that it was only professionalized much later. Several factors can explain the field’s relative “invisibility”: the still recent standardization of its methods, the diversity of local scientific traditions, nations’ varying public health policies, the range of different sites for observation (rural or urban studies, comparisons between neighbouring communities, insular populations, cohorts) as well as the varieties of interdisciplinary studies implemented within the scientific community (medicine, psychology, sociology, anthropology, biostatistics). These elements highlight the diversity of potential sources, and thus necessarily bring forward the question: how should one go about writing a history of this largely unrecognized field?

The Transnational History of French Industrialisation before 1914
The aim of this conference will be to analyse the characteristics of 19th-century French industrialisation and to understand how these distinguish France from other countries that went through the same process in the same era. Instead of using the English case as the only reference (as is customary), particular attention will be paid to a comparison between France and other continental European countries, especially Germany. One important dimension is the place of national industrialisation trajectories in an international and transnational context; in the case of France, colonial empire played an undeniable role.

"Fake news". Art and information
Inventing reality - between artistic production and historical enquiry
