  Time and Justice, Timing Justice

  Early modern and contemporary times, Europe and Americas

  Recent sociological research has emphasised the centrality of time as a key issue in the legitimacy and functioning of the judicial establishment. However, little research has been conducted by historians regarding the connection between justice and time. The purpose of this conference is to provide a comprehensive overview of the relationship between justice and time over the course of several centuries, in order to contextualise the current acceleration of justice. The aim is to examine how justice shapes its temporalities and their connection to other social temporalities. This questioning takes as its framework Europe and the Americas in the modern and contemporary periods, in order to compare different spaces, contexts and legal cultures.

  Sustainable transition of organizations and communities: challenges and perspectives

  Transitioning towards sustainability concerns all organisations, private and public, large and small. For businesses, climate change represents a cost. The growing pressure on natural resources is likely to exacerbate supply difficulties, as is the case with the issue of access to water, which is threatening farming activities in the Mediterranean region, particularly in Morocco. The aim of this symposium is to launch a global debate on how to better understand sustainable transition, based on a participatory approach involving a range of stakeholders : businesses, local authorities, governments, institutions, associations, scientists and experts, right down to ordinary citizens. It is also an opportunity to look more closely at the challenges and prospects of sustainable transition in different sectors (transport, tourism, energy, agriculture, etc.).

  “Voces”. Latin Middle Ages through Key Words

  Expressing and Performing Emotions

  Medieval society is inextricably linked to the words that shaped the existence at that time, both spoken and written. It was through these words that the men and women of the Middle Ages shared their beliefs, ideas and experiences. Words were used to share knowledge and preach the Gospel, but also to stigmatise the Other, exclude heterodoxy or call for war. Mastering the meaning of words was one of the main ways of retaining power, appropriating wealth or controlling access to knowledge. This could lead to verbal jousting, or even real conflict. The conference "Voces. Latin Middle Ages through Key Words" aims to take a closer look at Latin words that have played an important rolein the medieval culture. Every two years we propose to focus on a different major medieval concept and its linguistic expressions.

  L’objectif de ces journées est d’étudier la citadinité révolutionnaire, afin de nourrir la réflexion sur une série de notions connexes : habitat / logement / propriété. Chacune de ces notions renvoie à des rapports sociaux structurés par une série d’oppositions (sédentaires et nomades, propriétaires et locataires, résidence recensée et logement clandestin, logés et mal-logés) et à un spectre large de pratiques plus ou moins normées ou alternatives. Intégrer ces différents termes, étudier leurs variations, permettra non seulement de revenir sur les apports de différentes disciplines des sciences sociales, mais aussi d’être attentif aux variations des sources en fonction des contextes révolutionnaires.

  Les images envoient-elles un message ou se contentent-elles de faire du bruit, et c’est déjà bien beau ? Dans l’alternative formulée par Michel Foucault au sujet du savoir médical, apparaît de façon sous-jacente la question de la lisibilité, celle d’une lisibilité élargie, non-textuelle. De façon corollaire, émerge aussi la question de l’illisible, du diffus, de l’indistinct des images. Plutôt que d’assourdir le bruit des images, ce colloque le cherchera, tel un principe fécond pour enrichir le débat sur la lisibilité des images.

  Technologies of Ubiquity in the Visual Arts, 19th-21st centuries

  The international symposium Télé—Visions brings together a body of recent work on the influence of emission, transmission and reception technologies in the visual arts and visual culture, from the 19^th century to the present. Beyond the medium of television itself, the plural “tele-visions” refers to the variety of remote viewing and image transmission techniques which, from semaphores to wireless telegraphy and up to fiber optics and contemporary networks, have configured new models for the circulation and transmission of images. Dialoguing with the history of science and technology as well as with media archaeology, the contributors to the conference will explore broad topics such as the joint evolution of perceptual regimes and remote transmission techniques, the modalities of “prosthetic vision,” the material effects of image transmission and the spatio-temporal issues inherent to network dynamics.

  The conference concerned by this call for paper is part of the ANR program Children in decolonization: forced migrations and individual construction (EN-MIG) and aims at restituting the program’s results. It focuses on forced migration to France or its possessions involving children from different parts of the decaying French colonial empire. The comparative dimension lies at the heart of this symposium. It should make it possible to shed light on both the common points and the specificities of each collective migratory history. The trajectories of migrant children are often intertwined and also benefit from being studied from a connected history perspective.

  Au XVIII^e siècle, tandis que la botanique se développe et s’institutionnalise, les fonctions de l’herbier se diversifient. Instrument d’acquisition, d’enregistrement, d’échange et de diffusion des connaissances sur le règne végétal, l’herbier mérite d’être envisagé sous l’angle scientifique, aussi bien qu’artistique, économique et social. Le colloque « Usages, pratiques et fonctions des herbiers historiques » s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet de recherche « Héritages botaniques des Lumières : explorations de sources et d’herbiers historiques à l’intersection des lettres et des sciences » qu’une équipe de botanistes, historiens des sciences, historiens de la littérature et informaticiens mène à l’Université de Neuchâtel (Suisse) autour de Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), Jean-Baptiste-Christophe Fusée-Aublet (1723-1778) et Jean-Frédéric Chaillet (1747-1839).

  This conference will look at the theoretical debates surrounding the concept of nobility, its social repercussions and nobility of soul as a discriminating criterion, not only in the aristocratic social group but in the whole society. How does the ethical dimension associated with the notion of nobility help to justify its social pre-eminence? Do medieval authors agree or, on the contrary, oppose each other in resolving the contradiction between a moral quality and its hereditary transmission? How did these theoretical concepts translate into practice? Do they give rise to expectations or even social demands?

  The landscape at its margins

  Classée hiérarchiquement après la peinture d’histoire, le portrait et la scène de genre par André Félibien dans la préface des Conférences de l’Académie, la peinture de paysage n’en demeure pas moins un art apprécié des collectionneurs et des amateurs. Discutée dans les traités, tels ceux de Roger de Piles, Jean-Baptiste Du Bos ou Charles Batteux, la peinture de paysage occupe une part croissante dans la critique d’art au XVIII^e siècle : dans son Salon de 1767, Diderot décrit longuement l’expérience totale qu’il vit en regardant les tableaux de paysage de Vernet. Ce colloque investiguera la notion de paysage aux XVII^e et XVIII^e siècles.

  The study of the interdisciplinary notion of symbiosis has become a subject of reflection on biological identity, its becoming within the symbiotic relationship with an associated environment (biotic, abiotic, social) and on the nature and diversity of symbiotic relationships. Using transdisciplinarity as a method, the idea is therefore to reflect, across different disciplines, on the definitions of symbioses in living organisms and their heuristic, symbolic and even metaphorical dimensions and on the nature and temporality of symbiotic relationships between living organisms, including with our germs.
