World War II, Occupation, and the Search for Meaning in Societies at War
Taking a multidisciplinary, transnational approach, this conference explores the role of informal communication under conditions of World War II occupation and Nazi rule. Bringing together specialists on diverse European societies, the conference examines informal communication’s relationship to official state communications on the one hand, and its embeddedness in specific social realities and wartime mentalities on the other.

Freedom of Conscience in the Pre-Enlightenment (1000-1650)
Freedom of conscience is considered an unalienable right akin to freedoms of expression and speech, as noted in Articles 18 and 19 of the UN Charter. However, if we turn to the Medieval period, and its great diversity of innovative religious writing, it is clear that the mechanics of external oppression upon an individual’s inner life already existed in clear and comprehensible terms. Therefore, the (broad) question we would like to answer is : if we look beyond the eighteenth century, do we see this idea gradually become concrete ?

Conference, symposium - History
This international conference examines the history of confinements through the lens of their materiality. Indeed, confinement is defined by walls that separate individuals from society. Beyond the mere walls, daily interactions between confined individuals, institutional authorities, and staff are largely paved and defined by a variety of things : food, water, books, graffiti, clothes, money, letters, official registers, medicine, punishment objects, etc. In this regard, and drawing on the material turn in history since the early 2000s, things – whether “tangible” things physically available to historians or “textual” things described in written sources – might offer an additional perspective on the history of confinements more broadly, especially when addressing forms of “prison before the prison”.

These domains are increasingly converging toward shared theoretical frameworks, while also exhibiting a diversity of methodological and experimental approaches rooted in their respective disciplinary traditions.

Universities and Society at the End of Empire and Beyond (UniSoc)
Based upon an academic partnership between the Universities of Birmingham in the UK and Leiden in the Netherlands, Universities and Society at the End of Empire and Beyond (UniSoc) uses these two global seats of learning as a starting point to examine the role of universities in the transition from colonial to postcolonial and multicultural societies over the past century. Both institutions have started to reflect critically on this legacy. Building on these initiatives, and on the emerging scholarship on universities in (post) colonial contexts, UniSoc asks how the remit and modus operandi of European universities evolved in the aftermath of empire, opening a neglected entry-point into the wider question of the interplay between the colonial past and the post-colonial present.

This dossier aims to bring together original scholarly contributions that deepen our understanding of associationism in its multiple dimensions, privileging approaches that combine methodological rigour with empirical and analytical breadth. Proposals may be based on specific case studies or comparative analyses and should critically engage with the nature of associationism and its impact on contemporary societies. Contributions drawing on unpublished primary sources or offering innovative reinterpretations of well-known documentary corpora are particularly welcome.

S’inscrivant dans la perspective du champ interdisciplinaire des études sur le futur, et plus spécifiquement des études critiques sur le futur, ce colloque propose d’étudier la façon dont le futur du Royaume-Uni et des nations qui le composent a été imaginé à travers les périodes, sur des modes fictionnels et non-fictionnels. Nous nous intéresserons à la fois aux représentations du futur du Royaume-Uni dans son ensemble (le futur de l’État, de la société et de l’Union britanniques), et aux représentations du futur des différents territoires constitutifs du Royaume-Uni soit au sein de l’Union et de l’Empire, soit au contraire hors de ceux-ci.
