The Book in Its Time: Places, Materials, Forms and Techniques

« Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal », Number 20

The Book is a phenomenon that combines the fascination of its manifestations of yesteryear to the current debates and practices that announce future paths and dilemmas. We propose in this call an exercise that recovers the procedures and techniques that gained body to welcome another invention, that of writing, which inscribes the history of copyists, printing typographers who moved between cities and countries in search of business, that of their emergence in monasteries, courts, universities, binder workshops and typographies, that of street vendors and that of the production and marketing circuits.

The Sustainable Development Goals under scrutiny

A new international framework for development, called the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, emerged in 2015 as a result of the rise of sustainable development as a dominant paradigm for development and of the criticisms addressed to the MDGs. The new agenda established 17 development goals instead of 8 (MDGs). The SDGs made some progress compared to the MDGs. Because they target common challenges like climate change, the reach and legitimacy of the SDGs were extended. As we stand midway towards the set deadlines for achievement, it is time to question the relevance, foundations and the implementation of the SDGs. It also seems legitimate to question their universal and inclusive character, and their actual outcomes since 2015 by using critical and contexual approaches.

L’objet de cette journée d’étude est de dresser un premier état des lieux entre activités physiques (sports, éducation physique, etc.) et populisme, à travers des exemples particulièrement significatifs (Jeux olympiques, sport de compétition, formation, etc.), de la deuxième moitié du XIX^e siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui, à travers différents pays et, en particulier, l’Amérique du sud, berceau de cette « idéologie » avec la Russie. Le sport sous toutes ses formes d’expression (Jeux olympiques, sport « bourgeois », sport ouvrier, etc.) sera envisagé ainsi que certaines figures révélatrices de cette orientation (Mussolini, Poutine, Orban, etc.).

Cordel Literature: new perspectives, new approaches

Jangada Journal #20

Due to its thematic, poetic, and expressive diversity, the cordel witnessed, narrated, and recorded several national history moments. Even though only men mastered the art of composing and singing in verse initially, little by little, women also took the stage. Nowadays, poets adjust national and international interest themes to their meter, rhyme, and clause. They denounce the system’s falsities and contradictions; they question decisions and mock hypocrisy without, however, losing that aura of playfulness and wonder that has consecrated the cordel among us. Originally handwritten and later in printed versions, cordel has maintained a strong connection with the voice and culture of fairs and squares, the fey and laughter of rogue heroes, and the feeling of indignation of the less favored and the exaltation of legendary braves since the end of the 19th century. More recent researchers drew attention to the relationship between cordel and its singers’ orality and body performance while singing poetry and African griots. In this thematic issue, we propose to host papers concerning the most varied studies on cordel literature and its cultural practices.

What Latin America says to Europe: circulations, imaginaries, viewpoints (and fantasies)

We often tend to think of Latin America as a periphery of the global space. The very idea of globalization is frequently equated with that of cultural “Americanization”. Understood as a “United States of America-nization”, it is generally considered only as a circulation of ideas, models, knowledge, techniques or cultural objects from the North or the West to the South. However, working on Latin America frequently leads us to encounter traces of it or to identify its influence in Europe. Politics, culture or knowledge: the objective of this conference is to study some of the diverse forms of Latin American presence in Europe and/or in the European gaze. The works discussed here will take these circulations as an object, analyzing their processes, forms and impact. But they can also take a more reflexive form, by questioning the status of European-based researchers interested in Latin America.

Revue « Espaces et Sociétés »

This issue of the journal Espaces et Sociétés is focued on the contributions of city-dwellers to the care of greenery in the city, with particular emphasis on two key perspectives. In the first, we look solely at practices that emerge in the public space, whether spontaneous and developed outside organised structures, or encouraged by institutional entities established by the public authorities. In the second perspective, the aim is to look critically at the urban nature activities undertaken by individuals, i.e. outside the collective practices traditionally pursued in shared gardens or big urban projects by public authorities, cooperatives or civil society organisations. International comparisons or case studies from outside France are welcome.

The court was a microcosm of society under the Ancien Régime. The royal family and the great noblemen were not only in each other’s company, but they also rubbed shoulders with a whole crowd of office-holders of greater or lesser importance, who ensured the smooth running of this mechanism.

Five themes will contribute to the ideas about ways in which these galleries can be made more accessible to the public. Indeed, in spite of its gaps, this collection offers strong evidence of a specific view of the history of France that the Museum of the Palace of Versailles should analyse and question today.

Research will be organised along five different lines, through which the idea of the “perfect court”, such as we find at Versailles, can be defined: organisational model, public and private areas in the residence, reigning and governing in Europe, palace and democracy, State and palace rituals.

Crise des réfugiés ukrainiens versus méditerranéens

Des politiques en crise ou des promesses dans la question migratoire ?

The war in Ukraine has provoked an unprecedented humanitarian surge. The various actors: governments, NGOs, associations, civil societies are organizing themselves to offer assistance to Ukrainian refugees. The European Union is applying a 2001 directive, which allows for the granting of temporary protection status in order to guarantee rapid access to rights: right of residence, access to work, to healthcare, to housing, education... to a stay in decent and safe conditions. These exceptional conditions granted to refugees contrast with the conditions of Mediterranean refugees. It is in this context that the United Nations human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, welcomes this humanitarian solidarity but also recalls that other migrants and refugees are often faced with refoulement and criminalization at the EU's borders and beyond.

This edited volume aims to extend the findings of the conference "The Figure of the Multilingual Child in Literature". This edited volume aims at analysing child narrators and/or figures evolving in and between several languages – either because they speak at least two languages, or because their family, school or country is made up of a web of languages. These child figures can be autobiographical or autofictional shadows of the author. They can also be pure beings of paper. In all these cases, their identity is made of a fabric woven of all their languages, whether they are acquired simultaneously or successively, within the otherness of their monolingual fellow creatures.

Analysis of relics, hagiographic legends and Carolingian memories

Around the body of the Apostle James the Greater in Toulouse

Since the 14th century, the Basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse has been proud to possess the entire body of James the Greater. After a first preparatory seminar on 11 March 2019 in Toulouse (Vraies et fausses reliques: un vrai faux problème), a workshop was held on 10 December 2021 (Les reliques toulousaines de Jacques le Majeur), focusing on the material aspects (examination of bones, reliquaries, and authentic items). In a final stage, the results of these analyses should be put into perspective during a meeting which would lead to the writing of a monograph bringing together all the studies carried out on the relics of Saint James in Toulouse.

Decentering the analysis of Africa-China relations

The question put forward by the vast majority of works studying the relations between Africa and China is “What is China doing in Africa? What are the Chinese doing in Africa?”, thus often overlooking the anthropological dimension of social, economic, and political change in which African actors can reclaim their place, in other words an approach that would decenter China and the Chinese in order to shed light on the microfoundations of the macroprocesses of development by examining Africa and Africans. Agency – or agentivité as it is now commonly called in French – is defined here as the ability to effect or introduce socio-economic and political changes in the arena in which the actors are involved. By addressing the question of African agentive practices and norms in Afro-Chinese relations, this call for papers therefore leads to decentering China to focus on Africa.

AntiAtlas of Epistemicide

AntiAtlas of Epistemicide is a collaborative artistic and scientific project that brings together notices and synthetic articles on epistemicides, past or present, anywhere on the planet. The articles collected in this book will be accompanied by a map designed specifically for each example of an epistemicide. The question being as singular as it is unfathomable, this project does not have an encyclopedic aim, but to the contrary, to establish a non-exhaustive and subjective atlas, assumed to be both a scientific work and an artistic catalogue. As all disciplinary fields are concerned by this question, antiAtlas of Epistemicide is opening its call for contributions to a authors of all disciplinary affiliations.

Learning from territories / Teaching territories

In German (lehren / lernen) as in Arabic (تعليم / تعلم), a single letter distinguishes the concept of teaching from the concept of learning. Whether defined as a theoretical object of scientific knowledge that can be taught or as a body of practices that can be passed on, there is no escaping the need to address the issue of the relationship between the apparent universality of the concept of territory, on the one hand, and the variety of uses to which the term is put and the range of practices associated with it, on the other. The sixth CIST conference will focus on two questions: how to teach about territories (academic knowledge, empirical methods, disciplinary approaches, etc.) and how to learn from territories (observing, exploring, describing, experiencing, etc.).

Ce colloque est organisé dans le cadre du programme « Identités curiales et le mythe de Versailles en Europe : perceptions, adhésions et rejets (XVIII^e-XIX^e siècle) » mené par le centre de recherche du château de Versailles. Il a pour objectif d’analyser le modus operandi du mythe de Versailles dans l’Europe monarchique des XVIII^e, XIX^e et XX^e siècles, en prenant en compte les deux éléments contradictoires mais complémentaires qui caractérisent cette notion : le réel et la reconstruction du réel. L’enjeu sera donc double : cerner comment les différents aspects propres à l’identité de Versailles ont pu nourrir un imaginaire, mais aussi saisir la manière dont cet imaginaire a pu susciter d’autres réalisations – architecturales, rituelles, politiques.
