Fin de l’art ? Discours, pratiques, controverses

Photo: science. photography and scientific discourses
How did photography influence natural sciences, the historical and social sciences, and the more speculative sciences? Photography Research Centre at the IAH CAS is organising a conference “Photo: Science. Photography and Scientific Discourses”, which will take place on 17–19 September 2020 in Prague. It is the first in a series of interdisciplinary sessions that we would like to continue into in the future. Our objective is to start from photography, from its own existence, and to study it as an autonomous entity.

Chamada de trabalhos - História
Medieval to Modern Europe
Modern researchers still struggle to balance emic and etic explanations of revolutionary action, yet at least since the XIVth century, movements and thinkers began to arise which clearly defined their violent, revolutionary action in theological terms, or terms in which the “religious” and “political” are not clearly separate spheres of existence. Such movements built and innovated upon existing understandings of matters like the human condition and history, the perfectability of the world, and the human relationship with God, to not merely legitimize violent action (post facto), but to motivate, guide, and inform it along the way. Our workshop aims to discuss and elaborate upon these and other themes related to revolution from the medieval to the modern periods in Europe, west and east. We hope to address the implications of re-opening historical debate on revolutions which take seriously the input of political-religion.

Prehistory, history and reception of a historiographical myth (1880Ð1930)
Today the question “Orient oder Rom?” is no longer a topical issue in medieval art history, although a persuasive answer has never been formulated. One of the reasons for this oblivion deals with the controversial figure of Josef Strzygowski, who in 1901 published about the question his pivotal volume, nowadays discredited for its racial and proto-nazi judgement. However, the question “Orient oder Rom?” concerns not only with Josef Strzygowski: the prodromes of this critical concepts goes back to the nineteenth century, when the Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires fought to control territories. The conference aims to distance from the sole Strzygowski’s perspective and to comprehend and rewrite the story of a pivotal concept for both art historiography and cultural identity.

The Human-Animal Line. Interdisciplinary Approaches
On the premise that the boundaries between the “human self” and the “animal other” need constantly interrogating and analysing, we are convening an international conference with a view to widening the debate on this pressing question in Central Europe. The conference will be an opportunity both to critically reassess the results of the research already carried out in the area of English and French Animal Studies in its relations with contiguous fields, and to initiate new paths of research and analyse new sources of reference.

Medieval Manuscript Miscellanies: Composition, Authorship, Use
Case studies on particular medieval manuscript miscellanies written in any language are welcome at the workshop concentrating especially on three aspects: Composition: How do the contents fit together in specific cases? Is there a plan or a reason behind? If so, what does the selection tells about the compiler’s interests? Authorship: To what degree are the miscellany compilers and gatherers authors? Is there a personal touch discernable and interpretable? Use: How were these manuscripts actually used? Can a specific use of a particular miscellany be detected? Please, send a brief (300-400 words) abstract of the proposed 20-minute paper together with information on your affiliation and research interests to Lucie Doležalová at dolezalova@cts.cuni.cz by December 31, 2008.
