Travel to, in, and from the Ottoman World and Turkish Republic

Turkish Journal of History (Tarih Dergisi)

For this special issue of Tarih Dergisi, the Turkish Journal of History, we invite original research addressing questions arising from travel to, in, and from the Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic. Essays may focus on the place of travel writing in historiography. They may also address any and all aspects of travel. We particularly welcome studies of travel works in any format – books, manuscripts, letters, diaries, journals, reports, log-books, cartography, web-blogs – by Ottoman, Turkish, Arab, Asiatic and African travellers of any period. Essays need not, however, be restricted to conventional travelogues by individual travellers. We welcome studies concerned with modes of travel (pedestrianism, equestrian travel, trains, cars, planes, boats), and with questions involving mass travel (migrancy, nomadism, deportation).

La première conférence organisée par le centre de recherche sur l’éducation et culture globales de l’université Yeditepe sera réalisée sur le thème de « Migrations internationales au XXI^e siècle ». Les propositions pourront porter sur des thèmes suivants : les mouvements migratoires internationaux, la question de réfugié, la migration internationale et la question de sécurité, la migration irrégulière, le trafic des migrants, les politiques de migration (au niveau étatique et institutionnel), la fuite de cerveaux, les migrations forcées, les migrations de main d’œuvre, la migration et la culture, l’intégration des migrants, la femme migrante, les diasporas et les minorités, la migration et le développement, etc.

XIIe journées européennes de Galatasaray

Chaque année, les journées européennes de Galatasaray deviennent l’occasion de réunir des chercheurs qui s’intéressent à des thématiques multidisciplinaires en relation avec la recherche sur l’Europe. Le thème des douzièmes journées européennes, s’intitule « Visions croisées autour des frontières européennes : mobilité, sécurité et frontières ». Dans un contexte en pleine évolution, avec des données fortement nouvelles marquées par la crise financière et économique, l’objectif du colloque est d’aborder les frontières et les nouvelles formes de mobilité, aussi que la sécurisation des politiques migratoires.

The making of cultural policies

Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization

This workshop takes place in the framework of the research project “Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization”. It aims to analyse the making of cultural policies and actions in Turkey and the post-ottoman spaces. We wish to question the ways in which the circulations participate in the construction of cultural policies today as well as to rethink the earlier cultural policies and actions from the late Ottoman Empire onwards. The workshop attempts to question the co-production of cultural policies, of their spaces and territories, as well as the plurality of the conceptions of culture carried by cultural policies. The workshop will focus on the phenomena of hybridity, of connections, and associations of various actors which co-produce original forms of cultural policies.

Beyond soft power: The stakes and configurations of the influence of contemporary Turkey in the world

This workshop will explore the theme of Turkish political and cultural influence in the world, exploring scientific debates on the topic of “soft power” and its applicability to contemporary Turkey. This workshop aims at raising several questions: To what extent is the concept of “soft power” adequate to characterize Turkey’s influence and its weaknesses both on the international stage and towards its neighboring countries? Reciprocally, how can the analysis of the different patterns of Turkey’s influence help us question the concept of “soft power”, and to come up with other notions?

Inter-Asian Connections (2013)

To be held in Istanbul and hosted by Koç University, the conference will host seven concurrent workshops led by two or three directors and showcasing innovative research from across the social sciences and related disciplines. Workshops will focus on themes of particular relevance to Asia, reconceptualized as a dynamic and interconnected historical, geographical, and cultural formation stretching from the Middle East through Eurasia and South Asia, to East Asia. The conference structure and schedule have been designed to enable intensive "working group" interactions on a specific research theme, as well as broader interactions on topics of mutual interest and concern. Accordingly, there will be a public keynote and plenary sessions in addition to closed workshop sessions.

Identity, Religion and Ethnicity

New Patterns, Realities and Pitfalls

The workshop will analyse the interaction and the interpenetration of nationality, ethnicity and identity through the problematic of transnationalism, globalization and nation-state perspectives. The workshop will be supplemented by practical visits to local communities. Participants are invited to consider the theoretical debates and issues in differing local areas with a variety of social practitioners and representatives to gain further insights of demographic, economic, philosophic, legal and socio-anthropological approaches.

Politiques énergétiques métropolitaines : le cas des villes turques

Call for paper for a Seminar at the French Institute of Anatolian Studies (IFEA), co-organized by Eric Verdeil (Jean Moulin University in Lyon - UMR Environment City Corporation) and Jean-François Pérouse (Galatasaray University and IFEA). The report Energy and Urban Innovation (2010) by the World Energy Council underlines the fundamental role of cities in the energy transition and the interlocking of several series of actions, related to technology, economy and policy. It appears that the political and social practices are a major issue and justify an increased contribution of social sciences to the analysis of the implementation of these new policies. The seminar intends to address these issues in the case of large Turkish cities.

Dans le cadre du cycle 2010-2011 des séminaires de l’Institut français d’études anatoliennes, nous proposons un séminaire urbain interdisciplinaire prenant pour toile de fond la ville d’Istanbul. Au fil d’un rendez-vous mensuel, le regard croisé de nos invités facilitera la comparaison entre différents terrains perçus comme autant de lieux de mémoire et de mobilité et nous accompagnera dans un tour d'horizon des travaux contemporains qui éclairera aussi les intersections entre les questions mémorielles et les dynamiques urbaines.

Cultures de / dans la déterritorialisation

Dans le cadre du XVIIIe congrès international de l'AISLF, « Être en société. Le lien social à l'épreuve des cultures », le GT 14 « Institutions du patrimoine » propose de s'interroger sur les mutations des pratiques patrimoniales et mémorielles à l'ère de la globalisation et dans la mesure où ce phénomène marque l'affaiblissement de la référence territoriale. Il s'agira de montrer, via des descriptions fines de situations, de quelles actions sur le passé se nourrissent les cultures de ou dans la déterritorialisation – et pour quelles visées politiques.
