  Decentring the “Flâneur”: walking the early modern city

  Ideas about the origins and context for the flâneur have been tied to Paris, and viewed through the lens of Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project. While Benjaminian orthodoxy has increasingly been challenged, the association of the flâneur with modernity and European cities has continued to dominate studies of its variant forms. This conference aims to de-centre the concept and expand such critique by identifying and analysing forms of pedestrian observation in the early modern period taking note of the fact that strolling, seeing and being seen—and walking the city—emerged well before Europe and the 19^th century in urban experiences in cities like Istanbul, Isfahan, Delhi and Beijing.

The Board Game Studies Colloquium is a platform aimed at bringing together game scholars from all fields, as well as independent researchers, curators, game inventors, collectors and enthusiasts from all around the world. The theme for this edition is “the Evolutions of Board Games”.

  Emotional attachment to machines

  New ways of relationship-building in Japan

  Currently, technologies that foster emotional connections between humans and digital beings are perceived as a threat by many. Because emotional devices are considered to be make-believe systems based on ‘simulation’ (which is often confused with lying, deceit or fraud), emotional technologies could potentially be suspected of affecting human sexual identity or disrupting social bonds. This Symposium will examine the ways in which humans form intimate relationships with ‘emotionally-intelligent entities’ (robots, digital characters, downloadable boyfriend…) and what purposes these relationships to machines serve for them.

  Korean cinema: construction and deconstruction (1919-2019)

  Alors que Bong Joon-ho vient de remporter la Palme d’or du 72e Festival de Cannes, le cinéma coréen fête son centenaire, invitant à s’interroger sur son évolution historique. En effet, que reste-t-il comme patrimoine cinématographique dans ce pays scindé en deux depuis 1948 ? Si l’année France-Corée, en 2015, avait été l’occasion de mener des réflexions sur le cinéma coréen dans ses formes, ses représentations et sa diffusion – notamment à travers le colloque international « Regards croisés sur le cinéma coréen » –, son centenaire incite à se pencher sur son histoire et son actualité. Cette journée d’études cherche à son tour à explorer le cinéma sud-coréen contemporain en le mettant en regard avec sa propre histoire et celle de son pays. Cette indispensable introspection se double également ici d’une analyse réflexive du cinéma sud-coréen en dehors de ses frontières et des moyens par lesquels il atteint un public international.

  "Creative State-Making" & Some (Un)intended Consequences of Islamization

  Surprising Trajectories in Islam, Gender & Politics in Southeast Asia

  Islam in Southeast Asia has enjoyed a thriving trajectory in recent years. This is in large part attributable to various state-led Islamization movements that have succeeded in weaving the values and tenets of Islam into the very fabric of Muslims’ everyday life, thereby fortifying the power of the state that claims to embody the divine authority and immutability of Islam. But while the state imagines itself to be the legitimate (and only) “guardian” of Islam, its attempts to monopolize Islamic interpretations and institutions also – perhaps unintentionally – open up a more complex, discursive space that allows non-state actors to submit to, challenge, or appropriate and refashion various forms of symbolic state power, often in unpredictable ways.

  Towards a New Social History of Sudan

  Cette conférence, qui est également un programme de recherche, souhaite remettre au centre de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine du Soudan les « gens ordinaires ». Nous souhaitons également nous intéresser à tous les thèmes liés à l’histoire des gens « exceptionnellement normaux » (Grendi 1977) : le quotidien, les croyances, les horizons et désirs, dans toute leur diversité selon classe sociale et origine, mais aussi dans tous leurs liens et circulations. Même si la microhistoire a surtout marqué l’historiographie européenne, elle a inspiré aussi des nombreuses études en histoire du Moyen Orient et de l’Afrique (voir l’historiographie de l’Afrique du Sud). Elle a aussi des affinités avec des historiographies non-européennes comme les Études subalternes (malgré leurs différences reconnues). Nous croyons que le croisement de ces approches ne peut que mener à une meilleure connaissance des acteurs et actrices « ordinaires ».

  Locating negative affects in post-reform China

  This panel takes the prevalence of positivity in post-reform China as an invitation to investigate its opposites: the variety of negative ordinary affects that can be viewed as ensuing from state-induced “situations of restricted agency”. What can we learn from the various forms of negativity that morph out of the socio-political circumstances of post-reform China, and how to tread a fine line between the risk of romanticization and analytical dismissal? Under what conditions do the expression and performance of negative affects constitute “a manifestation of autonomy from state directives” in the context of pervasive “happiness” campaigns? Or is their work ambivalent, if not problematic, especially when they come to be associated with specific marginalized groups?

  Postcolonial Literary Panel, SAES (French Society for English Studies) Conference

  “Rebirth” may also imply looking back at past historical moments with a new perspective, which for instance led Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies to be associated with Neo-Victorianism, and more precisely the “Neo-Victorian at sea” and a “global memory of the Victorian” (Elizabeth Ho). This panel will also discuss “renaissance” movements: can we consider that an indigenous literary renaissance has taken place in Canada, Australia or New Zealand? Has an increasing awareness of the need to protect the environment led to new literary practices and movements? The Renaissance involved the development of vernacular languages in literature; what has been the place of vernacular languages and oral literary practices in postcolonial literatures? Theory also evolves constantly: has postcolonial theory been renewed since the 1980s? In what ways?

  Dialogues in the Late Medieval Mediterranean

  Methodological encounters and (dis)encounters

  The aim of this workshop is to launch a methodological exchange forum to analyze the panorama of the late medieval Mediterranean from different and complementary perspectives. During the last years, an increased number of projects focused on the relations between East and West, Christianity and Islam or North Africa and Al-Andalus had emerged in the international scenario. In the framework of these current research projects, this workshop has been proposed to achieve two main objectives: to create a dialogue space to share the recent research results of these projects, as well as to establish new research networks integrated by senior and young researchers which allow the development of multidisciplinary research lines about the late Middle Ages.

  Visible and invisible borders between Christians and Muslims in the Early Modern World

  It has traditionally been argued that with the rise of the modern nation state, borders increasingly became lines demarcating the spatial limits of state power. Recent efforts have been made to re-examine this territorial argument and pay close attention to the social, cultural, political, economic, and religious networks that created, reinforced, and also traversed borderlands. Though war, conquest, and diplomacy repeatedly redrew the dividing lines between empires and kingdoms, extensive interactions and exchanges left the borderlands with deeply entangled roots and routes. These patterns, mechanisms, and forces had a deep impact on all aspects of life and are still felt today. Arguably, no single element has been more dominant in shaping this complex relationship than the regional historiographies and historical memories that tried to write the empires out of their pasts entirely.

  L'objectif de ce colloque est de mettre en évidence et d'interroger les circulations intellectuelles, en particulier littéraires, entre les continents africains et asiatiques depuis la conférence de Bandung. Que celles-ci aient pris la forme de solidarités postcoloniales, comme dans le cas du Afro-Asian Writers' Bureau, ou d'échanges plus récents, elles restent en effet méconnues dans le champ francophone. Parmi les thèmes qui pourront être développés se trouvent notamment les trajectoires individuelles d’auteur·e·s ou d’intellectuel·le·s impliqué·e·s dans ces dynamiques, le rôle des traducteur·rice­·s et des traductions dans ces circulations, le rôle du multilinguisme dans la création, les questions relatives à la diplomatie culturelle et au soft power, les réseaux et les solidarités s’étant tissés au cours de l’histoire récente...

  Spatiality in Japan

  Japarchi research network seminars, 2019-2020

  Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi se poursuit en 2019. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Les interventions prennent appui et se concentrent sur un terme ou une expression. Cette année les entrées thématiques proposées portaient sur : 1) la notion de paysage au Japon, 2) des termes désignant des lieux, moments, rituels associés à l’hospitalité et à sa spatialisation (architecture, ville, milieu rural, paysage, jardin), dans l’histoire et aujourd’hui, 3) la notion d’espaces publics au Japon et de l’ensemble des termes et expressions usuels propres à qualifier ces espaces et définir leurs usages, 4) la ville et l’architecture soutenables, 5) les mobilités urbaines 6) la rétraction urbaine 7) les effets du tourisme dans les espaces.

  Quel est le modèle politique chinois ? Le facteur politique est la clé pour saisir les enjeux des changements permanents de ce gigantesque pays dans tous les domaines. Les intervenants tenteront ainsi d’analyser certains événements majeurs qui se sont produits ces dernières décennies, événements dont l’impact a été déterminant dans le parcours politique de la Chine contemporaine. Une attention particulière sera portée aux tentatives des autorités en vue de moderniser les institutions étatiques ainsi que les rapports entre la société et l’État, entre le pouvoir central et local. Ces évolutions interviennent dans le cadre de la grande transition de la Chine depuis l’époque moderne et dans le contexte de la transition post-communiste propre à la Chine.

  Ce colloque international et interdisciplinaire aimerait s’intéresser à la pluralité des écritures produites autour de l’histoire du conflit israélo-palestinien et à la manière dont la littérature, les arts vivants, le cinéma ont apporté une mise en récit complémentaire et parallèle à celle des recherches en sciences sociales. Sur un terrain hautement conflictuel où chaque parole, chaque mot sont analysés et soupesés, l’écriture littéraire et poétique, le théâtre mais également les productions audio-visuelles sont autant de ressources et d’outils que des acteurs ont mobilisé pour dire, donner à connaître les histoires personnelles et collectives de cet affrontement.

  Production and circulation of cultural assets: the case of Middle Eastern and North African countries

  Il s’agit de favoriser la création d’un réseau international de chercheurs et de professionnels pour initier, développer et diffuser des travaux sur les productions culturelles et médiatiques (cinéma, informations, livres, programmes télévisés, séries, etc.) dans les pays du Moyen-Orient et en Afrique du Nord. Son objectif est de saisir leurs enjeux sociaux, économiques, politiques et culturels en se focalisant sur les spécificités des espaces nationaux et les processus de circulation des productions et des pratiques. En dépit de leur importance, les biens culturels dans la région MENA (Moyen-Orient et Afrique du Nord) restent relativement peu traités par les sciences humaines et sociales.

  Commentaries on Ibn Sīnā’s Qaṣīdat al-nafs

  Two postdoc research grants

  Suite à la nomination à un poste définitif d’un de nos chercheurs, nous avons le plaisir d’offrir deux bourses de recherches postdoctorales pour une durée de 12 mois et de 9 mois respectivement pour le projet « Avicenna East & West I : Commentaries on the Qaṣīdat al-nafs ». Le objectifs du projet sont : (1) Comprendre la diffusion de la pensée avicennienne au sens large dans l’Orient musulman à travers l’analyse des commentaires du Poème de l’âme. (2) Procéder à une analyse transversale des commentaires pour déterminer sur quelles questions précises, en quels termes, en utilisant quels types d’arguments, quelles références, quel type de discours, les commentateurs s’affrontent au texte et entre eux.
