Le fait religieux à l’épreuve de l’archéologie
Les témoins matériels que met au jour l’archéologie permettent-ils d’aborder un domaine aussi peu concret que la religion ?
Aborder le phénomène religieux sous l’angle scientifique, c’est aborder la pensée symbolique à travers des témoins situés hors du champ strict des conceptions et des pratiques. Au-delà de l’époque contemporaine, interroger le phénomène religieux n’est possible qu’à travers les sources historiques, complétées par les témoins matériels révélés par l’archéologique. Le colloque abordera le fait religieux sous diverses perspectives : la définition du sacré à partir des témoignages matériels, la diversité des témoignages religieux, le rôle du religieux dans la définition de la culture et des identités collectives.

Image et rituel en Italie et en Sicile antiques
Deuxième rencontre jeunes chercheurs
Cette journée s’inscrit dans une série de rencontres visant à rassembler des jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur les interactions entre les images et les rituels dans la péninsule italique et la Sicile du VIIIe siècle av. n. è. au début du IVe siècle de n. è. Elle concerne donc les cultures étrusques, italiques, grecques et romaines. Elle s’intéresse d’une part aux images de rituels, et d’autre part aux images dans le rituel, ce qui pose entre autres les questions de leur activation et de leur rôle de communication entre les mondes humain et divin. Le thème de la journée se veut suffisamment large pour que puissent y répondre des jeunes chercheurs de différentes disciplines et pays travaillant sur ces différentes aires chrono-géographiques, de manière à fédérer un large réseau.

Cette journée d’étude se donne pour objectif d’explorer les relations qu’entretiennent la magie, la rhétorique et la religion dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine. Il s’agit de questionner les frontières, parfois floues, qui distinguent la magie de la religion, en partant du terme pharmakon (φάρμακον) : de fait, le terme est susceptible de s’appliquer aux trois domaines mentionnés, en leur conférant une part d’ambiguïté.

The rediscovery of cult places in the Aegean Basin and in Southern Italy”, focuses on the study of landscapes and the rediscovery of sanctuaries in Southern Italy and Greece between the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries. It invites to cross archaeological and historical approaches to understand the link between sanctuaries and landscapes, but also the way these data have conditioned the rediscovery of lost archaeological sites.

Competitive sharing in late Antiquity?
Cette journée d’études se propose de tester, pour les provinces orientales de l’empire romain, la pertinence du modèle du « partage compétitif » élaboré par Robert M. Hayden à partir de terrains d’études contemporains. Les communications porteront sur des sites fréquentés ou simultanément revendiqués par des groupes ou des individus qui se définissent comme appartenant à des traditions cultuelles différentes afin d’y accomplir des rituels. On cherchera à définir les critères qui conduisent au partage ainsi que les dynamiques d’occupation spatiale qui caractérisent ces sites, tout en évaluant la manière dont ils ont pu contribuer à la définition des identités religieuses.

Dialoghi Senesi sul Mondo Antico. This year's edition will focus on the varied methodologies and hermeneutical perspectives which represent the scientific guidelines followed by scholars in anthropology of the ancient world ever since its development. It will also focus on those approaches that today contribute to a constant enrichment and renovation of this field of study. Our goal is to offer to all those who take part the chance to present their work, be it the result of long research or elements of a work in progress, in an enviroment open to discussion between different perspectives (anthropological, philological, historical, archeological, semiotic etc.).

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Christian Initiation from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages
On the occasion of this meeting dedicated to baptism and baptisteries, we intend to highlight the spatialization of baptismal rituals and their evolution between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, by comparing different geographical areas within the boundaries of the Roman Empire and its neighbouring regions. Through the dialogue between written sources and archaeology, we would like to investigate whether baptismal practices could assert regional or confessional Christian identities.

Le Carnet parodien d’histoire de l’art et d’archéologie est un nouveau carnet de recherche publié en ligne sur la plateforme d'OpenEdition, Hypothèses. Il propose à de jeunes chercheurs comme à des chercheurs confirmés de publier des articles et posters en lien avec le thème annuel du colloque de Paray-le-Monial. Les posters sont exposés lors du colloque (3-4 octobre 2020). Cette année, le thème est « Reliques et pèlerinages ». Les articles et posters peuvent concerner toutes les périodes mais doivent privilégier des sujets liés à l'Europe occidentale.

This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

Il décalera le regard en le centrant sur l'étude des objets en tant que marqueurs de la performativité rituelle et de la commémoration du passage dans un contexte romain. L’objectif est une mise en parallèle des sources littéraires, épigraphiques et iconographiques avec les données matérielles, les objets découverts en contexte archéologique.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

A journey between the categories of the pure and impure in the imagination of the ancient world
Le colloque international « Hagnos, Miasma, Katharsis. Voyage entre les catégories du pur et de l’impur dans l’imaginaire du monde ancien » (Cagliari, 4-6 mai 2016) propose une mise au point sur les études consacrées aux phénomènes du pur et de l’impur et à leur exégèse antique. La réflexion autour de ce thème privilégiera une approche interdisciplinaire, tenant compte des perspectives iconographique, littéraire, anthropologique et historico-religieuse, afin d’encourager une confrontation et un dialogue élargis entre les spécialistes de cette question cruciale pour comprendre les mentalités antiques.

Dans le monde ancien, l’exigence d’accomplir des actes de purification, liés au besoin d’expier une faute ou d’accompagner un changement de statut, est perçue comme capitale dans beaucoup de circonstances. Les mots miasma et catharsis utilisés pour désigner respectivement la souillure et la purification, englobent de fait une dimension beaucoup plus articulée, qui se situe entre les sphères de compétence du pur et de l’impur. Les occasions qui prescrivaient le recours à des rites de purification étaient en rapport avec des phases liminaires de la vie, telle la naissance, la mort, mais aussi le mariage, ou encore avec les festivités religieuses. La mort était par exemple considérée l’une des principales sources de souillure. Le miasma qui l’accompagnait pouvait contaminer les dieux et les hommes, les vivants et les morts. Tous devaient alors indifféremment se soumettre aux rituels de purification. Les divinités elles-mêmes n’hésitaient pas à prendre les distances des individus contaminés, comme Artémis, lorsqu’elle abandonne son favori, Hippolyte, à son destin.

La figure martinienne, essor et renaissances de l'Antiquité tardive à nos jours
As part of the Saint Martin's year 2016 (1700th anniversary of the birth of Saint Martin), an international conference will be held at the University of Tours on the theme of “Saint Martin, expansion and revivals in his popularity from the origins to the present day”. The conference concerns not only the historical field but archeology, art history, sociology, theology, literary studies. The focus will be on the lesser known aspects of the theme, e.g. the revivals of saint Martin's cult in some regions of Europe at different periods; or ethnological and anthropological dimensions and their impact on art and literature; or theological appropriation of the saint Martin's figure.
