Lexis, framing, timings, 19th‒21st century in the Middle East
Is preaching consubstantial with crisis? Did the different religious traditions present in the Middle East come to grip with the notion of crisis during the contemporary period? This workshop examines the similarities and divergences between preaching endeavours by the different religious traditions and the transformations in religious discourse in the Middle East from the end of the 19th century onwards. Through a comparative and diachronic analysis, it aims to identify what "constitutes a crisis" for particular religious actors at a given moment in the contemporary history of the Middle East (e.g. military defeat, feelings of inferiority vis-à-vis Europe, demographic decline of a given religious group, secularisation of institutions, rise of atheism, etc.)

Special issue of “Violence: An international journal”
Where are we in the study of religions and acts of violence? Much of the literature on religions today has focused on modern Islamic movements, yet here, with the spread of several groups in various contemporary religious traditions, we have a full-scale landscape cases studies in the field of religions and acts of violence. It is the reason why Violence: An international journal is launching this call for papers, proposing some leads, which are obviously not exhaustive, neither focusing on contemporary manifestations of these types of violence.

Autorités coutumières, religions missionnaires et laïcité de l’État au Cameroun
La récente controverse entre quelques autorités traditionnelles et le clergé catholique dans la région de l’ouest du Cameroun offre l’opportunité d’approfondir la réflexion sur les relations entre les religions missionnaires (comme le christianisme et l’slam), les institutions coutumières et l’État au Cameroun en général. Comment concilier l’ordre coutumier des chefferies traditionnelles, qui revendiquent ici et là une certaine primauté par rapport aux religions venus d’ailleurs, avec l’ordre républicain marqué par la laïcité de l’État en situation de pluralisme religieux ? L’objectif de l’ouvrage est d’examiner à nouveaux frais les relations complexes entre les institutions traditionnelles et les autres religions au Cameroun afin d’aménager un espace de dialogue intellectuel voire interreligieux susceptible d’aider à prévenir des dérives extrémistes de tout bord.

The Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (Idéo) in Cairo, in partnership with the University of Insubria (Varese and Como), is organizing a Summer School in July 2025 as part of the Anawati Chair “Combating Religious Extremism through Interfaith Dialogue.” This program is specifically designed for PhD students or recent doctoral graduates (since January 1, 2023) focusing on citizenship and religious pluralism.

La série Studien zur Anthropologie und Kulturphilosophie (Études en anthropologie et philosophie de la culture) combine deux domaines de recherche revendiquant un statut indépendant mais qui entrent dans un échange productif : d’un côté l’anthropologie et la question de savoir ce qui est proprement humain chez l’humain, et, de l’autre, la philosophie de la culture et la question de savoir comment l’activité humaine se réalise en tant que culture. La série propose un forum ouvert à des thématiques portant sur l’anthropologie et sur la philosophie de la culture ainsi que sur l’interdépendance entre ces deux domaines afin d’explorer la richesse, la variété et la complexité de ces deux domaines dans une perspective historique et systématique. La série accueille des monographies et des ouvrages collectifs. Le présent appel vise des projets dont la publication est prévue pour la fin de 2025 ou le début de 2026.

Usages des pédagogies nouvelles dans l’enseignement religieux
Depuis une dizaine d’années en France, on assiste à la conjonction de deux mouvements se présentant comme « alternatifs » à l’Éducation nationale. D’une part un emballement autour de l’innovation pédagogique, d’autre part un renouveau de l’enseignement confessionnel. Cette journée se donne pour objectif d'explorer les phénomènes à l’intersection de ces deux mouvements. Elle se veut une réponse à plusieurs angles morts de la recherche actuelle, en particulier la rareté des enquêtes portant directement sur les enseignements et les socialisations religieuses dans l’enfance. Nous nous intéresserons en particulier aux pratiques documentées dans des écoles « libres », catholiques, musulmanes ou appartenant au réseau Steiner-Waldorf.

Religious Conversions. Believing and Doing on the Move in the Mediterranean Area
This issue looks at religion in terms of its ability to mobilise institutions, groups and individuals around plural dynamics that contribute to the redefinition of the religious field itself. It looks at religious conversion through the prism of multidirectional and communicating trajectories, ’bifurcations’ in which movements of diversions, decentering and return to the self come together. Religious conversion is understood here beyond the dualistic categorisation of rupture and continuity. This leads us to think of it not simply as an opaque process of religious disaffiliation and affiliation, but as a movement from self to self, involving a constant tension of negotiation between reconfiguration of the ways in which people believe and do religion, and the significance of the identities and sensibilities of individuals in a given social environment.

Cette journée, organisée par et pour les doctorant·es du centre, porte sur lesenjeux de positionnalité des chercheur·es du religieux. Ce choix de thématique, ancrée dans une approche pluridisciplinaire des questions méthodologiques, permet de saisir la diversité des recherches menées par les doctorant·es du CéSor. Les différents panels proposeront une réflexion sur la distanciation de l’enquêteur·ice vis-à-vis de son terrain ethnographique mais également sur la positionnalité du/ de la chercheur·e dans un contexte de construction d’attentes paradoxales produites par les enquêté·es.
