Enjeux, défis, solutions
Le XVIIIe siècle est marqué par le contraste entre l’émergence d’une société de consommation et la pauvreté endémique de la société d’Ancien régime. Dans un contexte d’intérêt accru pour le social, cette évolution ne manque pas d’attirer l’attention des réformateurs des Lumières de l’ensemble de l’Europe, comme témoigné par des ouvrages bien connus de l’époque – tel le Discours sur l’origine et les fondements de l’inégalité parmi les hommes de Rousseau –, mais aussi par d’autres publications et concours académiques moins étudiés.

Les villes et les infrastructures hydrauliques : ressource et contrainte
Les objectifs sont d’une part d'examiner à travers les divers aménagements, comment les sociétés ont maîtrisé l'eau, façonné des paysages urbains et interurbains spécifiques et d’autre part d’étudier la prise en compte de ce patrimoine hydraulique dans les projets urbains actuels ou à venir, vis-à-vis de la fragilisation des territoires en plein changement climatique.

Du quotidien à l’intime : les correspondances transatlantiques du XVIIe et du XVIIIe siècle
Après la première journée d’étude organisée par le projet CORBAN en novembre 2023 sur la problématique de la communication en temps de guerre, nous souhaitons cette fois-ci diriger cette journée d’étude à travers les différentes thématiques présentes autour de la correspondance transatlantique des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles du quotidien à l’intime.

Changes in property rights and land regulation
Global and historical perspectives
How do land reforms affect land access and property rights? Who are the actors of these transformations? Does such evolution contribute to the commodification and financialization of land? How do urban regulations produce informalities and affect socio-spatial dynamics? This half-day thematic seminar seeks to delve into these key questions with two roundtables. Aiming to inform today’s urban transformations through law and history, the six presentations will cover different contexts as diverse as Istanbul, Northern Italy, rural China, Madrid, and colonial Bombay, spanning from the 14th century to today.

This conference proposes to explore the concept of ecological grief and the fast-growing body of theoretical work that is developing around it against the background of the ongoing sixth-mass extinction and biodiversity loss. With this conference, we also wish to think about the longer history of ecological grief from the eighteenth century onwards, including by exploring some of the consequences of the Industrial Revolution. Is nature grievable? How do we grieve for it? What is the role of writers and artists in this individual and collective process? While to some, environmental grief gives way to desolation or an irredeemable sense of melancholy, others view it as a form of resilience or even a spur to action, a source of activism in art.

L’approche géohistorique documentera les grandes variations de l’utilisation des terres depuis le XVIIIe siècle, d'autres impacts anthropogéniques, tels que les développements hydrauliques, et des séries d'événements extrêmes à partir de plans, cartes, croquis, documents, journaux, photographies anciennes. Ces informations seront combinées avec des ré-analyses climatiques à long terme pour simuler les recharges sur le long terme. Les recharges simulées seront analysées pour déconvoluer les impacts des évolutions de l’occupation des sols et des changements climatiques.

This two-day academic symposium on ecology and race from the 16th to the 18th century will apply both ecocriticism and race theory that period. We hope to historicize the interconnectedness of human beings and the natural world in the early modern and modern age before looking at the impact and repercussions of early modern racial and ecological theories in our contemporary world in an “Ecology and Race Campus” on the 5th of July 2024, the 3rd day of activities.

Les natures de Paris (1770-1914)
En quel sens peut-on encore dire, un siècle après Walter Benjamin, que Paris fut la « capitale du XIXe siècle » ? Dans un ouvrage récent, Christophe Charle propose de conjuguer tous ces termes au pluriel : on trouverait à Paris une diversité de capitales, et une diversité de XIXe siècles. Foyer d’une « modernité » inaboutie et conflictuelle, dont on inventait alors l’idée, Paris était un lieu d’affrontement entre des populations et des formes de vie différentes qui se déployaient dans des temporalités et des mondes distincts. Capitale administrative, capitale des révolutions et théâtre de la lutte des classes, elle était une métropole industrielle mais aussi une capitale culturelle caractérisée par la coprésence exceptionnelle de ses savants, écrivains et artistes. Dans la continuité de ces réflexions, ce colloque voudrait montrer que Paris fut aussi une capitale de la « nature ».

Engraving dance, music, science and geography
Crafts, trades and the dissemination of knowledge in the 18th century
The expression “danse gravée” has long designated 18th-century dance notation practices, since the diffusion of the Feuillet notation from 1700 onwards. The repertoire of engraved contredanses, published and distributed in the form of collections of small notebooks or booklets, notably from the 1760s and the Répertoire des bals de La Cuisse, is relatively well known. The place of women engravers, editors and booksellers will be widely discussed during these days. The aim is to understand how 18th century choreographic practices fit into a network of printmaking know-how, from technical engraving to semi-fine printmaking.

Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)
The COST Action “Islamic Legacy: Narratives East, West, South, North of the Mediterranean (1350-1750)” [CA 18129] is launching a call for a conference “Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)”. The event that we are disseminating is being organised within this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. We aim to create a network that will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders.

The Enlightened Nightscape (1700-1830)
The objective of The Enlightened Nightscape 1700-1830 is to present a cross-disciplinary discussion on the thinking about the concept of night through examples from the global and long eighteenth century. This edited collection seeks to bring together case studies that address how the night became visible in the eighteenth century through different mediums and in different geographical contexts. The proposed study of the representation, treatment, and meaning of the night in the long and global eighteenth century also contributes to an on-going exercise that questions the accepted definitions of the Enlightenment. By bringing Eighteenth-Century Studies into dialogue with Night Studies, The Enlightened Nightscape 1700-1830 enriches the critical conversation on both lines of research

L'expérience - experientia/experimentation (17th-18th centuries)
Le thème des journées jeunes chercheurs qui se tiendront à l’université Paris Nanterre en septembre 2019 est l’expérience. Celle-ci peut être définie à la fois comme le processus, fait d’épreuves ou d’essais (c’est le sens d’experientia), d’errements, voire d’erreurs, qui conduit à une plus grande sagesse, et le résultat même de ce processus, à savoir la sagesse ou la connaissance à laquelle on parvient, c’est-à-dire l’instruction acquise par l’usage. Cependant, en français, le terme « expérience » désigne aussi l’expérience scientifique ou expérimentation, où l’on retrouve le sens d’« essai ». Il s’agit alors d’une procédure expérimentale qui cherche à mettre en évidence un fait et qui doit contribuer à augmenter le savoir.

Territorialising modern spaces
Europe-Overseas, 15th-19th centuries; First session
Cette rencontre propose une réflexion collective sur les actions, les projets, les figurations et les imaginaires visant à la construction des territoires. Ce phénomène est trop volontiers envisagé comme un simple cadre explicatif ou un élément d’explication globale se suffisant à lui-même. Au contraire, la réalité de ce qu’est le territoire doit être comprise dans un contexte spécifique : celui de l’expansion européenne entre les XVe et XIXe siècles. On peut le définir le territoire en tant qu’espace qu’un groupe humain s’approprie tout à la fois sur le plan politique et judiciaire, économique et religieux. Il constitue aussi un lieu de construction identitaire et communautaire, dans lequel une histoire commune se fonde notamment sur les pratiques religieuses et la croyance en un destin providentiel partagé. Il est enfin, à l’époque moderne, l’objet d’une institutionnalisation et l’enjeu d’un pouvoir éminent.

Thermalism and heritage in mountainous zones in Europe from the 18th century-21st century
Ce premier colloque international organisé dans le cadre du programme de recherche FEDER TCV-PYR par les universités de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour, Toulouse Jean - Jaurès et Perpignan Via Domitia, s'intéresse au patrimoine thermal et de villégiature de montagne en Europe du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours. Le thermalisme contemporain se développe en effet dans les zones de montagne à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, lorsque les préoccupations thérapeutiques, renouvelées par le vitalisme, se doublent d’un engouement sans précédent pour les spectacles de la nature qui touche alors à l’âme. Ce thermalisme, à la clientèle parfois mondaine s’ouvre aussi aux militaires et aux indigents.

Entangled Histories: Britain, France and India (18th–19th centuries)
Cette journée d’étude vise à mettre en lumière l’histoire connectée, ou croisée, de la Grande-Bretagne, de la France et de l’Inde aux dix-huitième et dix-neuvième siècles. Depuis quelques temps déjà, notre compréhension des interactions, des confrontations et des transformations entre l’Europe et le sous-continent indien durant ces deux siècles a été profondément renouvelée. Des approches historiographiques récentes, issues notamment de l’histoire impériale, de l’histoire des sciences comme de l’histoire maritime et océanique, ont contribué à ce renouveau dans une perspective résolument transnationale. Cet événement sera l’occasion de réunir d’éminents spécialistes issus d’universités britanniques, américaines et françaises travaillant sur ces questions.

Itinerant arts trades - migrating artisans (Europe 17th-19th centuries)
Il s'agit d'étudier, dans un contexte de migration, la nature des dynamiques sociales à l’œuvre avec l’arrivée de populations émigrées d’artisans des métiers d'art, en milieu urbain et/ou rural, du XVIIe au XIXe siècle. Si une partie du dossier portera sur la présence des Italiens en France, d'autres cas peuvent être abordés en Europe et pour diverses spécialités (peintre-décorateur, maître-verrier, stucateur, mosaïste, figuriste, etc.). Une approche par les réseaux et les transferts culturels est souhaitée. Envisager la question des circulations invite également à conduire une réflexion sur l’identification d’une « identité artistique » de ces artisans émigrés.
