  Urban wastelands: a form of urban nature?

  This symposium will deal in particular with totally or partially vegetated urban wastelands, and proposes to question the roles played by wastelands in the green infrastructure, and in particular the differences with other urban green spaces. We can wonder whether brownfields can be considered as informal green spaces and to what extent they can help to change the current perception of urban nature. Three aspects will be considered, linked to three major issues: social, ecological and urban planning stakes.

Ces journées d’étude sont donc ouvertes à tou.te.s les doctorant.e.s et étudiant.e.s de Master 2 recherche et professionnel. Q​uelle que soit l’avancée de votre projet de recherche, vous pourrez soumettre une réflexion méthodologique en lien avec votre terrain d’enquête et/ou proposer une analyse de vos hypothèses et/ou résultats. Destinées à l’origine aux jeunes chercheurs et chercheuses du CREDA, les journées sont désormais ouvertes à tou.te.s étudiant.e.s, doctorant.e.s et apprenti.e.s chercheuses et chercheurs de France et d’ailleurs.

  Rethinking the History of the Rust Belt since 1945

  This region, stretching from western New York to eastern Iowa, was until the middle of the 20th century the country's manufacturing and industrial heartland. From the Great Migrations that radically transformed its demographics to the weakening of its economic model, as well as the massive struggles waged by local workers and protagonists of the Civil Rights movement, the political and social history of the Rust Bel. By bringing into dialogue the ongoing or recently completed research of doctoral students and junior academics with a view to opening up new perspectives on the history of the Rust Belt, from a range of disciplines (history, sociology, political science, geography), we intend to highlight spaces and actors too often relegated to the margins of this region’s history, despite their having decisively contributed to shaping the contemporary Rust Belt

  The social history of black populations in France

  Depuis plusieurs années, des  travaux étudient les formes de racialisation subies, ou revendiquées par certains groupes dans la société française, en particulier par les populations noires. Ils invitent également à analyser les usages sociaux de la notion de race – entendue comme un fait social et non biologique – en France et ils interrogent de façon générale la place à accorder à la « question raciale » dans l’historiographie française. Quelle histoire sociale des populations noires ces travaux permettent-ils de construire ? Dans quelle mesure, la catégorie « populations noires » est-elle pertinente et que peut-elle apporter ? Sur le plan empirique, force est de constater que les groupes susceptibles de s’inscrire dans cette catégorie sont plus ou moins bien connus. Comment dépasser la réduction de cette catégorie à des élites sociales ou militantes souvent bien étroites ?

  1989 in the East: between order and subversion

  The political events that unfolded in Eastern Europe around the year 1989 have constituted one of the largest upheavals that the European continent has seen since the end of the Second World War and the dawn of the Cold War. The congress intends to re-examine the processes that led to the disintegration of communist regimes in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe as well as in the Balkans and the USSR. In spite of the considerable number of research projects dedicated to the “fall of communism,” there are few that systematically examine these transformations in the making, taking into account the entire social field and its blossoming since the second half of the 1980s. The congress seeks to explore these transformations by highlighting their heterogeneity in the different countries.

  This conference proposes to provide transversal and transdisciplinary reflections on the various modalities of mobility and migration that are created through the arts, as well as the remaking of the worlds of music and dance in the transnational field. It will question the modalities of movement or of impediments to circulate that are revealed by music and dance’s analysis; the way in which the worlds of art and contemporary creations are shaped by different forms of (im)mobility; and how, in this wake, individuals act on their social environments and on the power relations in which they evolve.

  Maritime realities and imaginations in the Indian Ocean

  Carnets de Recherches de l'océan Indien et Revue numérique de l'Observatoire des Sociétés de l'Océan Indien

   The main thrust of this third issue of Les Carnets is the oceanic interface of the Indian Ocean, as both a real and an imagined space. While academic inquiry haslargely focused on its resources and marine reserves, this third issue of Les Carnets endeavours to widen the existing perimeter and bring together texts that shed new light on the maritime dimension of the Indian Ocean. We welcome proposals in the areas ofgeography, law, history, literature, linguistics, and economics. Can we say that there is a distinct community of Indian Ocean inhabitants sharing values and interests as well as a common past that distinguish them from the other societies in their respective continents? Are there realities and a common imaginary for the peoples of this marine expanse? Or on the contrary, given the immensity of the Indian Ocean, would it seem that specificities and peculiarities dominate and fragment, overshadowing such a hypothesis ?

  Returning, circulating, staying put: Complex family strategies among African migrants

  Call for papers for a thematic issue in the Revue Européenne des Migrations Internationales (REMI)

  While there is an increase in studies of return migration to Africa and of the transnational family arrangements of African migrants, there is still little evidence of the way complex return mobilities are embedded in family dynamics. Family configurations are changing over time with varying aspirations and decisions to return to the place of origin, to circulate, or to stay put (in theplace of destination). Furthermore, with the return of a family member, new patterns of mobilities within the transnational/translocal family may take place. This special issue proposes to gather researchers working on family and African migration (both within the African continent and beyond) to investigate the question of return (or non-return).
