Punish and Rehabilitate through Work

Institutions, Discourses, and Agency in Central, Eastern, and Western Europe at the End of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century

In this workshop, we aim to bring together scholars from various fields, mainly experts in the history of social policies, history of convict or forced labour, histories of diverse marginalised or criminalised groups, history of criminology and penal law, and history of prisons and prison reform. Our intention is to explore the locally diverse disciplinary institutions such as continental workhouses, reformatories for young offenders, forced labour camps, etc. from various perspectives. These institutions could be located at the nexus of confinement, labour, and rehabilitation.

Architecture of the Past: inspiration for the Future

Architecture, in response to universal needs, has developed in various forms, in diverse environments, and consequently offers a multiplicity of solutions. This diversity of construction types is of interest to numerous disciplines that do not often have the opportunity to exchange ideas. The aim of this interdisciplinary event is to bring together archaeologists, historians, architects, artisans, conservators, restorers, and ethnologists to share their work and research on architectural practices and structures that are relevant to approach current and future environmental, social, and economic challenges. This event will also discuss how the architecture of tomorrow is also invented with an eye to the past, whether it be sophisticated or vernacular, regardless of materials, period, or geographical and cultural area. A list of themes are suggested and detailed in the full call for proposal.

Quelles nouvelles ? Les écrivains naturalistes et la « course folle à l’information » (1870-1914)

Au XIX^e siècle, l’information circule de plus en plus vite, grâce notamment à l’essor de la presse. Zola constate ce phénomène lorsqu’il parle de « course folle à l’information ». Plus largement, les auteurs naturalistes voient dans le développement croissant de l’information à la fois une manière d’accéder à la réalité mais aussi une façon de diffuser leurs œuvres. Pourtant, ce rapport enthousiaste à l’information n’est pas dénué d’ambivalence. Certains déplorent le trop-plein de nouvelles et le rythme effréné de la presse. La pensée, sous le flot de l’information, perdrait de sa valeur. Ce colloque se propose donc d’étudier le rapport des auteurs et autrices du naturalisme à la nouvelle, en tant que discours à la fois recherché mais aussi questionné, de 1870 à 1914. L’approche se veut transdisciplinaire (littérature, linguistique, histoire, sociologie, science des médias et didactique) et transnationale (Europe néolatine et Amérique du Sud).

Land Use and Consumption in a Historical Perspective

Definitions, Concepts, and Methods

The relationship between societies and soil is intrinsic to human history. Nowadays, this relationship is strongly defined by land use and consumption practices that, at different scales, increasingly threaten the common good and the biodiversity conservation. Urban planning interventions and intensive forms of production lead to the fragmentation, erosion, and ultimately, transformation of soil into a commodity, a freely usable “raw material,” rather than recognizing it as a non-reproducible good. In such a context, a revision of the evolution of concepts of use, consumption, and artificialization of the soil can contribute to a better understanding of the perspectives and rhetoric developed over time and in relation to contemporary challenges.

The “Professional Worlds” of Architectural Ornament: Actors and Practices from the 18th Century to the Present Day

This symposium aims to contribute to a better understanding of the "professional worlds" of architectural ornament, by fostering a dialogue between two dynamic fields of research that have hitherto rarely been connected: the history of ornament and the history of professions linked to architecture and construction. Resolutely positioned on the side of craftspeople and professional practices, the various contributions will focus on: the spectrum of ornamental professionals; the relationships between professions and the concrete organization of production chains; and finally, the circulation of people, techniques, and material elements. Covering a wide range of geographical and cultural areas, they will cover a broad contemporary period – from the 18th century to the 2010s.

Magic, divination, astrology and justice, from Antiquity to the present day

The aim of this dossier, published in the online journal Criminocorpus, is to look at the issue from a different angle and to see how magic (or what is described as ‘magic’), astrology or divination, which constitute fields of knowledge that are more or less lawful depending on the period, interfere with justice. Depending on the social and cultural context, these relationships bring into play the relationship between justice and science and religion, varying conceptions of judicial rationality and the role of society and, increasingly, public opinion with regard to so-called magical practices.

Cet atelier doctoral interdisciplinaire propose d’explorer les façons dont les sciences sociales contribuent à la compréhension de nos interactions avec les autres êtres vivants, et les formes de mise à l’épreuve des sciences sociales par la question animale. L’histoire des animaux, la sociologie interspécifique, l’ethnographie multi-espèces constituent quelques-uns des chantiers inaugurés ces dernières années pour interroger les relations entre les êtres humains et les autres animaux. Sur cette base, l’objectif de l’atelier est d’ouvrir de nouvelles questions plutôt que de résoudre des débats en cours, en s’appuyant sur le dialogue entre étudiants et chercheurs issus de différentes disciplines et en travaillant sur des temporalités variées.

Espaces du religieux et transformations urbaines

Ce dossier thématique de la revue Métropoles entend ainsi interroger ce lien entre espaces du religieux et transformations urbaines par l’exploration des effets réciproques des transformations urbaines sur les expressions religieuses. Ce regard a l’intérêt de contribuer à éclairer ainsi la place, la forme et le rôle des religions dans les villes contemporaines. Cette entrée permet en outre d’aborder une série d’enjeux politiques. En effet, en raison des processus de « déprivatisation » et de « diversification » évoqués en amont, le religieux est souvent placé au cœur de controverses publiques, voire des conflits, et ce dans des contextes géographiques, culturels et politiques différents. Mettre en lien les transformations urbaines et le religieux revient donc à replacer ces conflits dans leur spatialité et à interroger la manière dont cette relation participe à la fabrique de la ville contemporaine.

Dans ce numéro de Sociétés & représentations, l’idée est de traiter la façon dont les représentations des identités qui transparaissent et s’énoncent à travers les patrimoines culturels immatériels, qu’ils soient ou non institutionnalisés, se construisent sur des discours, images et imageries de l’authenticité, de l’origine, des minorités, des rapports de domination, de l’assimilation et de l’appropriation culturelles. En dépit de toute la documentation produite par les historiens sur l’ampleur spatio-temporelle des circulations culturelles, les patrimoines immatériels tendent ainsi à devenir des nouveaux vecteurs de tensions émotionnelles qui s’inscrivent aussi dans des rapports géopolitiques (force, prestige, etc.) et géoéconomiques (exploitation économique, propriété intellectuelle, etc.).

Les terrains d’aventure, apparus au Danemark à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, sont des espaces de jeu à l’usage des enfants dans lesquels ils peuvent jouer, bricoler et construire librement à partir de matériaux simples. Or nous assistons depuis 2018, à un intérêt renouvelé pour ces espaces d’apprentissage et d’expérimentation par le jeu. Le projet Terrains d’aventure en mouvement en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (TAMARA) vise donc à combler ce manque, en mettant en perspective les traces du passé avec les initiatives actuelles et à venir.

Trans, queer and “third gender” people in Muslim countries

Journal “Anthropology of the Middle East” (AME) – Issue 20.1 (Summer 2025)

Today, despite some prohibitions, more and more trans and queer people are asserting their gender identity in Muslim societies. Over and above the importance of gender binarity and spatial separation in Muslim countries, there are many historical figures of "third gender", to use the concept introduced by the anthropologist Gilbert Herdt. In the Muslim world, the term "third gender" generally refers to the eunuch of Ottoman harems, but there are many other figures in the Islamic context, varying from countries (Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Egypt, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Albania...) and times. As the vocabulary and realities are plural, depending on the country and the period, the specificities of these figures and their names will be analyzed, as well as the ways in which these groups or individuals designate themselves. This issue will examine these figures collectively as a group (hijra, trans, queer...), and their role and social status, but will also look at them as individuals.

A comprehensive approach to global exchanges and consumption patterns could shed light on a perspective often overly focused on Europe. Moreover, various disruptions, such as armed conflicts, droughts, and floods, intermittently disrupted the habits of European consumers.

Scandals and Politicization of (Anti)Corruption.

From Loyal Subjects to Mass Politics (14th - 20th Centuries)

This international workshop aims to consider the politicizing potential of scandals. Here, politicization is understood broadly as all the notions and ideas that make people have political awareness and help them define the sphere of the political. They foster public outrage, but proposalsand solutions can be alternative and even antagonistic. Considering scandals throughout different national and chronological frames, from the admonitionsfound in the mirrors for princes (specula principum) to mass demonstrations in the interwar years, by way of the causes célèbres of the Ancien Régime, the aim is to encourage historiographical debate on the capacity of political scandals to mobilize all social classes, revise social values and influence individuals’ ideologies.
