  Occupations

  Le présent ouvrage sur l’occupation allemande en 1914-1918, a pour but de mettre en perspective les différentes occupations d’un territoire à travers le temps mais aussi à travers l’espace. Les contributions attendues pourront donc porter de l’histoire antique à l’histoire contemporaine, sans limitation géographique. Dans le cadre du renouveau de l’historiographie des guerres depuis le début des années 2000, les civils occupent désormais une place importante. Ainsi, une véritable histoire sociale des conflits s’est développée depuis lors, que ce soit dans le cadre des soldats au front, mais aussi des civils à l’arrière. C’est dans cette perspective de renouvellement historiographique que le présent appel à contributions se situe.

  Cet appel à contribution a pour objectif la publication d'un ouvrage collectif autour du thème des festivals culturels africains : espaces de promotion des patrimoines et des identités des peuples. Cet ouvrage est consacré à l’étude des fondements sociohistoriques, des grands enjeux et mutations qui sous-tendent la pratique des festivals culturels en Afrique, dans une perspective diachronique et transdisciplinaire. Les contributions à cet appel pourront s’articuler autour de trois axes principaux, susceptibles d’être abordés dans une approche régionale, nationale et/ou transnationale. De même, les contributions qui s’inscrivent dans une démarche comparative et transdisciplinaire sont vivement encouragées.

  Que ce soit dans les domaines à enjeux environnementaux comme le climat, l’énergie, la biodiversité ou l’eau, ou dans les domaines de la démographie, de l’immigration ou de l’éducation, le bassin méditerranéen se révèle un territoire particulièrement intéressant pour traiter de l’action publique à l’épreuve des transformations socio-environnementales globales : pour voir comment se documentent et s’enregistrent les évolutions, comment s’alimentent les politiques publiques dans leur ambition prospective, notamment sous les mots d’ordre de la « transition » et du « développement durable ». Ce travail de post-doctorat devra examiner comment la pensée prospective utilise ses différents outils, notamment l'approche par les scénarios, pour penser des défis présents et futurs, aussi bien pour les volets de protection de la santé et de l’environnement que pour la promotion d’activités plus attentives à ces enjeux.

  Gender in Global and Transnational History

  Transnational and global history have become intriguing fields of research for young historians. Dissolving the containers of national history writing to look at transnational networks, cross-border movements or spatialisation processes, long-standing assumptions in historical research are being constantly challenged by innovative doctoral projects which look for connections and transfers rather than reinforcing nation-state containers. At the same time, historians such as Angelika Epple and Christoph Dejung ask the highly valid question, “was it a man’s world?”, when it comes to the failure of this critical and ever-growing field to include the achievements of women’s and gender history into the research scope of global and transnational history. The doctoral workshop is intended to map out the intersections and crossovers between Gender History and Transnational and Global History, by taking a collective look at participants research projects.

  TRIP: Tourism and Pandemics

  The goal of this Workshop is to document how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting tourism, including its industry, holiday practices, travel imaginations or tourist’s representations. It will question the transformations in mobility and migrations as the pandemic  leads to the closure of airports and restricts travel: how does that affect privileged ultra-privileged mobilites, holiday practices, their motivations and justifications. We will also question what this pandemic reveals about the manufacture of travel imaginations from the perspective of the transport and hotel industry and travelers, and the evolution of the representations of the foreign tourist, who in a few weeks have gone from objects of desire to subjects of contamination.

  Transnational Perspectives from the 19th-21st Century

  By adopting an interdisciplinary and transnational perspective, we seek to decompartmentalize the different approaches to citizenship education, which are crossed by recurring questions: How to articulate the individual and the collective? How can citizenship education be promoted without prescribing it? Is it a matter of encouraging citizens to adhere to the democratic project with all its imperfections, or of making it possible to criticize it and, therefore, to achieve political emancipation? Initially scheduled for April 2020, this cycle, which includes a round table, workshops, an exhibition and an international conference, will take place entirely online in November 2020.

  Academic Freedom in a Global Context: Challenges and Perspectives

  Transtext(e)s Transcultures: Journal of Global Cultural Studies

  Academic freedom here is understood as the freedom to produce and share knowledge free from political, economic, or social hindrance so as to shed light on complex situations or issues. Academic freedom refers specifically to members of research and education institutions who seek to create knowledge “for its own sake” (Butler, 2017), rather than for industrial or commercial interests. Therefore, it is distinct from freedom of speech or other basic human rights as it is not an inherent entitlement of each human being, but rather a freedom attached to a specific community of people whose duty is to further develop knowledge in several areas. In that sense, academic freedom has a collective dimension but is exercised by a “community of the competent” (Haskell, 1996) who ensure that science is not politicised. This special issue of Transtext(es) Transcultures seeks to document and analyse the alarming rise in, and the diversification of, threats to academic freedom in the twenty-first century across the globe.

  The BBC's reputation for impartiality and independence is one of the cornerstones of its value system, which also underpins its self-declared mission to "inform, educate, and entertain". However, these values have constantly been redefined as several forms of censorship and self-censorship have been applied in the context of conflict with political or economic powers. This means that the role and independence of the BBC as a public service needs to be questioned and the grey areas and silences of the BBC from its creation in 1922 to the beginning of its digital era in 1995 need to be the objects of inquiry.
