  80 years of the Institute for the Research and History of Texts

  La création de l’Institut de rechercher et d’histoire des textes a été réalisée en 1937 sous l’impulsion de Félix Grat, ancien élève de l’École des Chartes. La mission de cet organisme ? "L’étude de la transmission écrite de la pensée humaine" sous la forme manuscrite. Si au commencement, cet institut avait uniquement pour but la transmission des textes classiques de l’Antiquité en latin, son champ d’action s’est élargi, de l’antiquité jusqu’au XVIe siècle, à l’ensemble des langues véhiculaires du pourtour méditerranéen (grec, hébreu, arabe, copte, syriaque…) et à des disciplines complémentaires : paléographie, musicologie, papyrologie...L’IRHT est le premier laboratoire public consacré aux sciences humaines et est immédiatement rattaché au CNRS lors de la création de ce dernier en 1939. Aujourd’hui, l’Institut est sur le point de rejoindre le campus Condorcet (Aubervilliers/Porte de la Chapelle, Paris 18e) dédié aux Humanités et aux Sciences sociales.

  Land-Plot Mapping in Early Modern Rural Societies (Europe, Americas, Asia): from Production to Uses

  Despite their richness, these sources are still considered as secondary documents, dependent on a written corpus which could provide, alone, the legitimate subject of a historical study. Nevertheless the identification, digitization and online publishing of old maps have accelerated and keep busy archivists, curators, archaeologists and researchers. But the same can’t be said of their historical analysis, despite the work done by rural historians and historians of cartography. This conference will bring together researchers with a thorough knowledge of a large corpus of maps. The purpose of the conference is the preparation of a synthetic publication on the subject – which won’t be limited to the proceedings of the conference.

  Categorising the Church (II)

  Clerical and monastic communities in the Carolingian World (8th-10th)

  The Carolingian era has seen by many as a time when the Church became increasingly institutionalised. One of the main aspects of this development, exemplified by the series of councils held between 816 and 819, was a (re)definition of the canonical and monastic orders and the requirement for each community in the realm to comply either with the institutiones canonicorum and sanctimonialium or with the Rule of Benedict. Despite the influential works of J. Semmler or R. Schieffer, however, the real impact of these proposed reforms is still an open question, and from this perspective, the very notion of institutionalisation can also be questioned.

  Stages of Utopia and Dissent, 50 years on...

  15 May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

  Writing the city [into the urban]

  In the aftermath of the May 1968 uprising in Paris, Henri Lefebvre published in 1970 his classic treatise La Révolution Urbaine where he pointedly placed the urban in the centre of this revolution, identifying a theoretical need for the concept of the urban as a planetary possibility, one he considered more appropriate than a redundant notion of the city as a social scientific object. This workshop is a step in this direction where, coming 50 years after the backlash of ’68, this event aims to establish a conversation between the city and the urban by drawing on the notion of "ethnographic theorisation" where the theoretical potential of the urban can be harnessed from ethnographic insights of the city. It explores contingent ways in which the city can be written into the urban through manoeuvres that engage with the process of writing the city across disciplines from literary cultures to urban studies

  Medieval revolutions

  The French Journal of Medieval English Studies BAM is seeking submissions for a special issue focusing on the notion of “revolution”. The word “revolution” does not appear in English before the 14th century. The word is borrowed from French revolucion, derived from the Latin revolvere. In medieval Latin the meaning of revolutio becomes both scientific and religious as it describes the movement of celestial bodies and the transmigration of souls (metempsychosis). The first known occurrence of the word “revolution” to describe an abrupt change in social order dates from 1450. However, that use does not become common until the end of the 17th century.

  Global '68 - Solidarity in Alliance and Global History

  1968 was a year of offensives, uprisings, and demonstrations against capitalism and imperialism, for liberation and emancipation and the war in Vietnam was its epicenter. The events claimed many victories for democracy, equality, and emancipation, but also provoked deep, abiding repression. A counterfeit history has subsequently erased police violence and the deaths of participants, removed workers, women, students, and indigenous peoples from the picture, and eliminated anti-Americanism, anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, as well as the profound influences of the wars and interventions in Algeria, Latin America, and Vietnam. “Global 68” will retrieve the aspirations, energies, memories, and histories of this worldwide movement and offer hope to a new generation of activists.

  Longtemps associé dans l’historiographie à la seule question des grains, le terme « disette » apparaît doté d’un champ d’application beaucoup plus vaste dans les sources de l’Ancien Régime et de la période postrévolutionnaire. Il s’étend en effet bien au-delà du seul domaine frumentaire, ou même alimentaire, pour englober une large gamme de situations caractérisées par la rareté momentanée, ou la raréfaction en cours, d’une « ressource » – qu’il s’agisse de matières premières d’origine naturelle (« disette de bois », « disette d’or », « disette d’eau », « disette de gibier », « disette de poisson », etc.), de produits agricoles et manufacturés (« disette de fourrage », « disette d’engrais », « disette de laine », « disette de monnaie », etc.) ou encore de catégories de la population (« disette d’ouvriers », « disette de marins », « disette de nourrices », « disettes de prêtres », etc.).

  Impressionism and ideas

  L’ambition de cette journée d’étude est d’aborder l’impressionnisme en fonction des grandes idées de son temps, d’interroger son insertion dans le contexte intellectuel – scientifique et philosophique, mais aussi politique et religieux – de la France de la seconde moitié du XIX^e siècle, afin de mieux comprendre et « situer » la pensée de ses membres. Si ce contexte a fait l’objet de nombreuses études, celles-ci ont presque toujours été menées par rapport aux seules œuvres des impressionnistes, et non par rapport à leur pensée. En effet, aujourd’hui encore, poser la question de la pensée impressionniste, c’est peu ou prou se confronter à une inconnue. Y a-t-il une pensée impressionniste ? L’impressionnisme « pense »-t-il ? Le temps paraît venu d’y consacrer une attention particulière.

  The Publisher’s Discourse

  This issue aims to enrich knowledge and analyses of the words and discourse of publishers, that is to say, of those individuals who are responsible for the development, production and distribution of books or periodicals. We will adopt here a trans-national and trans-historic perspective (19th to 21st centuries) at the junction of the sociology of publishing, of cultural history and of intellectual history in order to identify points of convergence amongst various case studies. In what ways have publishers revealed themselves through their words and in writing since their debut as social figures in the 19th century through to their contemporary incarnations? How has the place of publishers in literary, intellectual and editorial fields been constructed by discourses that accompany the act of publishing?

  School policy, schools and school users in Sub-Saharan Africa (mid 19th century-1970s)

  Ce séminaire Politiques scolaires, écoles et publics scolaires (milieu XIXe siècle - début des années 1970) sera consacré à l’histoire de l’institution scolaire, de ses acteurs et de ses publics, à la réception de l’idée de scolarisation ou au « désir d’école » dans l'Afrique coloniale et immédiatement post-coloniale pour les ex-territoires britanniques, français et belges, entre autres, entre le milieu XIXe siècle et les années 1970 qui marquent un tournant par exemple au Sénégal, à Madagascar ou au Nigeria. A partir d'exemples ancrés dans une période, un contexte, un événement ou un pays particuliers, le séminaire permettra de comprendre dans quelles mesures les politiques et pratiques scolaires, les lieux de formation, l’investissement individuel ou collectif des multiples acteurs de la vie de l’école et leur vécu sont indissociables de la construction des sociétés en situations coloniales mais aussi des jeunes nations indépendantes.

  Sharing meals. Social aspects of eating and cooking together

  Eating involves many other dimensions than just ingesting food. It is especially a social act, as it involves the social position and relationships of the individual in all of the included practices: supplying, cooking, dressing, ordering, ingesting, clearing, washing-up, managing left-overs, etc.  This symposium offers to explore, with a social science approach, the different dimensions associated with sharing meals (non exhaustive): Cultural differences in the manners of sharing meals; Specificity of the sharing of cooking times regarding the sharing of meal times; Use of commensality as a social action mean; Symbolic representation of the benefits of sharing meals (psychological, physiological, social); Comparison of meals regarding other eating times (snacking); Political/Diplomatic use of meals; Organization, perception and role of meals in institutions (school canteens, hospital, nursing homes, prisons…).

  The sacred space in the medieval church

  Les rites liturgiques articulent la structure matérielle d’un édifice ecclésiastique. De ce fait, chaque conception artistique participe à son aménagement. Reproduit sur un bloc de pierre – claveaux de grandes arcades ou chapiteaux - à partir d’objets sacrés comme les chancels, le motif sculpté aide à identifier un espace liturgique spécifique. Cette question de l’espace liturgique peut également être considérée à travers le prisme de l’objet liturgique. Plusieurs cérémonies se déroulent, en effet, en dehors du cadre bâti de l’église : les processions, les drames liturgiques ou encore une partie des funérailles. Les objets liturgiques ont alors pour fonction de transposer, en dehors de leur cadre habituel, les rites cultuels.  Ce colloque international, qui aura lieu les 5 et 6 juin 2018 dans les locaux de la Maison Archéologie et Ethnologie de René Ginouvès (MAE), a pour objectif de mettre en présence jeunes chercheurs et spécialistes reconnus pour dresser un état de la question dans les travaux actuels. Deux thématiques rythmeront ces deux jours dans lesquelles seront regroupées les communications des intervenants.
