Le CNRS SHS a retenu, au titre des Écoles thématiques 2026, le projet « ITINÉRANCES : la circulation des traces matérielles du passé de l’Antiquité à nos jours », porté par Angelos Dalachanis (CNRS/IHMC). La formation se déroulera du 11 au 15 mai 2026 à l’École française d’Athènes (EFA).

Maritime, approches, ressources, historiographie, investigations, synthèse (MARHIS, 2025-2026)
Ce séminaire en ligne est consacré à l’histoire maritime. Il aborde cette année la question des relations entre la mer et la culture matérielle. Il vise à mieux faire connaître l’histoire maritime telle qu’elle se pratique aujourd’hui, tout en fédérant une communauté de chercheurs disséminée dans de multiples universités, dans la lignée du travail du groupement d’intérêt scientifique histoire et sciences de la mer.

Revue « Afriques. Débats, méthodes et terrains d’histoire »
In this issue, we wish to focus on historical approaches - in the broadest sense of the term - which aim to understand economic mechanisms in relation to political, cultural and social phenomena within African societies and in the context of their times, without necessarily addressing their potential links with the present. We wish authors to focus on economic processes that were internal to societies, including interactions with external institutions (and especially imperial institutions), provided that these interactions shed light on the workings of African societies. Our goal is also to consider the documentary challenges facing historians.

The economies of nature in medieval and modern periods
The 12e summer school in economic history proposes to tackle the fundamental theme of the use that medieval and modern economies made of nature, i.e. the way in which the elements making up their environment were transformed in order to be inserted into the processes of production, exchange and consumption, thus becoming resources with multiple functions that also fundamentally transformed the living environment of human beings, contributing to the construction of rural or urban landscapes. This is as much a question of epistemology as of empirical knowledge, and the partial overlap between two sub-disciplines, economic history and environmental history, raises questions.

Le colloque « Repenser le Sahara médiéval : documents connus, lectures inédites (XIIIe-XVIe siècle) » clôture un projet Émergence(s) soutenu par la ville de Paris entre 2019 et 2023 et développé au sein de l’UMR Orient et Méditerranée. À travers une approche multiscalaire, du local au global, le Sahara médiéval (hors région nilotique) est pris en compte non seulement comme une interface dynamique, capable d’assurer la connexion et la mise en étroite relation des territoires qui l’entourent, mais également comme une aire chrono-culturelle à part entière, se plaçant dans l’altérité, politique, économique, sociale et culturelle, du Maghreb et de l’Afrique sahélienne.

Matériaux nobles, matériaux dépréciés
Histoire sociale et culturelle des matériaux de construction de l’antiquité à nos jours
La longue histoire des matériaux de construction a suivi diverses perspectives : enjeux architectoniques, disponibilité et approvisionnement, coûts, qualités esthétiques… Plus récemment, elle a aussi été l’occasion d’aborder l’architecture sous un angle différent en remettant en question la longue suprématie des matériaux lithiques au profit d’autres substances, souvent considérées comme plus anecdotiques, voire dépréciées, comme le métal, la terre crue et la brique, la paille, le bois. Cette journée d’étude invite à replacer dans leur contexte social et culturel les choix faits par les bâtisseurs et les regards portés par les usagers, les visiteurs et les hommes de l’art sur les matériaux de construction.

L’appel du large (rencontre finale) : vie et sociétés portuaires
Le projet « L’appel du large » a été initié en 2019 par les enseignants-chercheurs spécialistes d’histoire ancienne du « Centre de recherche et d’études ‘Histoire et sociétés’ » (CREHS) de l’université d’Artois. Il consiste, d’une manière générale, à explorer les interactions entre les sociétés humaines et ces espaces particuliers que sont les mers et les fleuves, en donnant une place à part entière aux embouchures et deltas, qui constituent des interfaces et des environnements remarquables. Cette rencontre clôt la série commencée en 2019, en portant l’attention sur les ports et les sociétés portuaires.

Lords and Masters : domination in medieval Normandy (11th-15th centuries)
Taking inspiration from Robert Fossier’s important questions on who dominated the territory and inhabitants (“la terre et les hommes”) of medieval Normandy, we are keen to reopen major historiographical debates on feudalism and serfdom. Our conference aims to stimulate new reflections on the notion of domination. We take the term to include not only the actual control of people and/or territories, but also strategies implemented by the dominators to legitimize and justify the social order over which they ruled. Through reinterpretation of political, economic, social and religious arenas, considered together, this conference positions itself within the cursus of recent works on the fabric of power in medieval societies. It aims to question, and perhaps redefine, the concept of domination. Whilst domination contributed much to social hierarchy, other formative aspects – such as cooperation, negotiation and contestation – should not be overlooked.

Second Ḥajar Online Workshop
In the workshop organized by Hajar, three archaeological case studies which relate to agriculture and/or water management during Early Islam will be presented, followed by responses and a discussion. These will enable another examination of Andrew Watson’s arguments from the 1980s about an “Arab agricultural revolution” or “green revolution” - this time from an archaeological perspective.

By its nature, its cycles and the diversity of its states, watermaterializes different notions of the border. It can representand indicate a limit, a rupture, a separation betweenspaces and human groups. Conversely, it is also a mediumof exchange and contact between communities andacts as a bridge between the terrestrial and spiritual worlds. For this seventh issue, the authors are invited to examine, amongother things: the physical boundaries of water as topographic and hydrographicobstacles, political and territorial boundaries, the social boundaries of water and symbolic boundaries based on the values attached to water.

Antiques sellers in Paris in the 19th century
Au sein du marché des antiquités qui s’organise au XIXe siècle en Europe, les marchands ont joué un rôle central dans la circulation des œuvres comme dans la constitution des collections privées et publiques. Ils sont cependant moins connus et ils ont été moins étudiés que les collectionneurs qu’ils côtoient. Le Répertoire des ventes d’antiques en France au XIXe siècle (INHA-musée du Louvre) permet de proposer et de traiter de nouvelles données sur leur implication dans les ventes aux enchères à Paris, une des places centrales du commerce d’antiquités de l’époque. Cette journée cherchera à mieux cerner les contours de ces acteurs multiples, variés, et dont le rôle a sensiblement évolué tout au long du siècle.

Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity
Pluridisciplinary dialogues on the status of the agricultural treaty
« Il ne voulait pas instruire les agriculteurs mais plaire à ses lecteurs » : comme l’indique ce jugement bien connu de Sénèque sur les Géorgiques de Virgile, la valeur pratique de la poésie didactique a pu être remise en cause dès l’Antiquité. Les traités en prose en revanche semblent épargnés par une telle critique, même si Palladius, par exemple, reproche aux auteurs qui l’ont précédé leur excès de recherche littéraire. Selon lui, cette dernière nuirait à l’intelligibilité du propos, et en cela Palladius rejoint les préjugés contemporains selon lesquels les qualités techniques et scientifiques d’un texte seraient inversement proportionnelles à son degré de littérarité. De fait, le traité technique, en tant qu’œuvre de prose non fictionnelle, relève essentiellement du « régime conditionnel » de littérarité et donc, in fine, de la perception du lecteur. Outre la question de l’inscription dans une tradition littéraire, celle du destinataire et du lectorat est donc essentielle pour définir le statut du traité technique en prose.

Political economics and fiscality in the Hellenistic and Roman east
Le projet de cette journée serait de faire dialoguer des historiens, philologues, papyrologues, épigraphistes et archéologues spécialistes d’économie et de fiscalité antiques afin de découvrir comment ces deux disciplines pourraient plus étroitement travailler ensemble et mettre en commun leurs savoir-faire techniques et théoriques.

La Diana, société historique et archéologique du Forez, organise tous les deux à Montbrison (Loire), un festival d'histoire comprenant des expositions, des films et un colloque universitaire. Le prochain festival aura lieu sur le thème des limites et frontières. La notion de frontière est mouvante et en constante redéfinition. Historiquement, elle a connu des réalités et des perceptions bien différentes d'un monde à l'autre, d'une période à l'autre. Le colloque se fixe pour but d'interroger ce différentes réalités dans le temps et dans l'espace, mais aussi d'explorer cette notion dans l'imaginaire des sociétés. Aussi, plusieurs disciplines peuvent être convoquées : histoire, archéologie, géographie, sociologie, anthropologie, littérature, linguistique, géopolitique...

Craftsmen and metalworking in medieval cities: thirty five years later
The symposium Craftsmen and Metalworking in Medieval Cities: 35 Years Later addresses the metallurgies of iron, copper, tin, lead and precious metals, which produced a wide variety of objects necessary for urban life at the end of the Middle Ages. The nature, volume and possible standardization of production may be studied, as well as the needs of the city, the practices and techniques of craftsmen, their knowledge and know-how. The relationships between the crafts and between the craftsmen themselves might be examined, including dependency links, pluriactivity, networks of sociability or local relationships in urban areas. The identity and regulation of these crafts, their integration into urban society, their relationship with the surrounding rural areas and with other cities may also be revisited.

The identity and regulation of these crafts, their integration into urban society, their relationship with the surrounding rural areas and with other cities may also be revisited. The symposium will be interdisciplinary in nature, promoting dialogue between historians, archaeologists and archaeometry, without excluding anthropological approaches to learning and knowledge

Maritime Knowledge for Asian Seas
An interdisciplinary dialogue between maritime historians and archaeologists
This conference will close a four-years French-Taiwanese research project (ANR/MOST) on Maritime Knowledge for Asian seas (seaFaring), which propose to reconsider, and possibly to review, our knowledge on China’s seafaring tradition through a new approach focusing on the practical know-how available to the craftsmen, seamen and merchants during the 16th-18th centuries, with special emphasis on sailing and trading knowledge and practices.
