Other Voices. Resilience, Identities and Politicization of Local Agents and the unfolding of the Modern State (17th-19th Centuries)

This international conference wants to reflect on the interaction between local agents and the institutional State Building policies between the 17th and the 19th Centuries. The construction of the Modern State, far from being a top-down vertical process, has consisted of a debate, often tense - if not adverse - between the interests of local communities and the State apparatus or raison d'état. In this way, the aim is to achieve a much more complete knowledge of the construction of the Modern State based on the study of the local sphere. The conference presented here is undoubtedly boldly conceived: to bring together marginal orisolated aspects and intertwine them to revisit specific historiographical hypotheses.

Épidémies et maladies transmissibles. Des fléaux à travers l’Histoire

Epidemics and Transmissible disease. Scourges throughout History

The COVID-19 pandemic, which has spread worldwide since 2019, originating from China, draws attention to a recurrent phenomenon over the centuries, that of epidemics and transmissible diseases. Firstly, it is important to define the terms of the subject. An endemic disease is one that persists permanently in a given region, such as malaria. An epidemic occurs when a contagious disease affects a large number of people at a specific time. A pandemic occurs when the disease rapidly spreads to a significant portion of the planet.

Drivers of Change, Labour migrants from the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey and social transformation in Western Europe, 1960-1990

Labour migrants were a transformative power in Western Europe, provoking intended and unintended, large and small societal changes. It nevertheless remains challenging to fully integrate migrants’ pivotal roles into our fundamental comprehension of social, cultural, and political change in Western Europe. This workshop aims to merge subfields at the intersection of migration history to integrate the history of post-war labour migration into a larger narrative.

Histories of Photography from the Struggles for Independence: practices, circulations and aesthetics

It's a well-known fact that the history of photography as a discipline has for the most part been constructed as that of "Western" photography, more specifically that of Europe and the United States. Between the introduction of so-called "extra-Western" photographers on the contemporary art market since the 1990s and the numerous works on the history of the medium during colonial periods, there is still a lack of information on the history of photography from the liberation and independence struggles onwards, from a global and transnational perspective, across all geographical zones. The aim of this colloquium is to highlight the histories of photography generated during the processes of decolonization, while rethinking methodological and aesthetic approaches to the medium that are still too Western-centric.

“Walking” Practices and Trades in East Asia

Traces and Techniques of Circulation on Foot: Modern and Contemporary Perspectives

This conference is to revisit “walking” practices and trades in Asia from the 15th century to the present day – but without geographical and chronological exclusivity, and taking into consideration the essential participation of pack animals in human mobility. Some pedestrian practices have been decisive in the functioning of societies, in supplying towns and remote regions; others “marches” carry, in terms of protests, a powerful political dimension, leading to profound social transformations.

The “Professional Worlds” of Architectural Ornament: Actors and Practices from the 18th Century to the Present Day

This symposium aims to contribute to a better understanding of the "professional worlds" of architectural ornament, by fostering a dialogue between two dynamic fields of research that have hitherto rarely been connected: the history of ornament and the history of professions linked to architecture and construction. Resolutely positioned on the side of craftspeople and professional practices, the various contributions will focus on: the spectrum of ornamental professionals; the relationships between professions and the concrete organization of production chains; and finally, the circulation of people, techniques, and material elements. Covering a wide range of geographical and cultural areas, they will cover a broad contemporary period – from the 18th century to the 2010s.

Intangible Cultural Heritage. Between Cultural Circulations and Heritage Tensions

The Culture of the Bottle. Uses and Visual Representations of Alcoholic Drinks in the 17th and 18th Centuries

The subject of alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, liqueurs, etc.) in the modern era has been embraced by the museum world, which has found it a pleasing and intriguing subject to attract audiences. By fostering a dialogue among researchers engaged in the exploration of this interdisciplinary annual symposium aims to scrutinize the concept of "alcoholic beverage" in France, Europe, and worldwide to better comprehend the methods and stakes related to its representation. A comprehensive approach to global exchanges and consumption patterns could shed light on a perspective often overly focused on Europe. Moreover, various disruptions, such as armed conflicts, droughts, and floods, intermittently disrupted the habits of European consumers.

    Scandals and Politicization of (Anti)Corruption.

From Loyal Subjects to Mass Politics (14th - 20th Centuries)

This international workshop aims to consider the politicizing potential of scandals. Here, politicization is understood broadly as all the notions and ideas that make people have political awareness and help them define the sphere of the political. They foster public outrage, but proposalsand solutions can be alternative and even antagonistic. Considering scandals throughout different national and chronological frames, from the admonitionsfound in the mirrors for princes (specula principum) to mass demonstrations in the interwar years, by way of the causes célèbres of the Ancien Régime, the aim is to encourage historiographical debate on the capacity of political scandals to mobilize all social classes, revise social values and influence individuals’ ideologies.
