  Lessons of the Cold War?

  Visegrad Scholarship at the Open Society Archives

  We invite historians, researchers, political scientists, sociologists, and socially engaged artists to reflect on the Lessons from the Cold War by taking cues from the Blinken Open Society Archives (OSA) collections. The applicants are encouraged to reflect on the connections as well as on the differences between current times and the past by following some recommended sub-topics. The current call is part of a reflexive-research program at OSA interested in connecting past issues related to oppressive regimes, censorship, violence and information manipulation to current phenomena. We would like to assess the potential of a genealogical project linking the contemporary epistemic and political crisis of democracy to past modes of inquiry and activism.

Réunissant des chercheurs d’horizons divers, des militants, des diplomates et des artistes, l’ambition de cette journée est de dépasser les boîtes noires idéologiques construites par les historiographies coloniales et les régimes politiques pour restituer les liens profonds qui unissent les sociétés algérienne et palestinienne. En fin de compte, il s’agit de créer un espace pour penser non seulement les espoirs mais aussi les tensions et les contradictions inhérentes aux luttes décoloniales à différents moments de l’histoire.

  The presence of embassies, consulates and other foreign diplomatic representations in France is a relatively undocumented subject, particularly in contemporary history, although it lies at the crossroads of the history of diplomacy and international relations, economic history and the history of immigration. This call for papers aims to generate contributions for the second year of our webinar, intending to continue the exploration and unravelling of French international and diplomatic history 'from below' in the 20^th century.

  Le travail sur le métier des idées politiques

  XXIXe colloque de l’Association française des historiens des idées politiques

  Le travail, au XXI^e siècle, connait d’importants bouleversements, dont témoigne l’actualité, entre le Big quit (ou Great resignation), qui désigne les millions d’Américains qui ont quitté leur job à la faveur de la crise de la covid, cherchant en cela un mieux-être, sinon une meilleure situation professionnelle, et le lancement récent de France travail, destiné à refondre le service public de l’emploi, aider les secteurs qui peinent à recruter, et favoriser l’accompagnement des chômeurs – y compris ceux les plus éloignés de l’emploi. À quoi on pourrait ajouter que la pandémie qui vient de sévir a donné un coup d’accélérateur au travail à distance, voire aux entreprises non physiques. La « fin du travail », qu’avaient auguré, pour des raisons différentes, le prospectiviste J. Rifkin et la sociologue D. Méda ne serait pas encore venue. Ces changements ont rappelé, si besoin était encore, que le travail n’est pas qu’une source de richesses, une valeur économique… ; il est aussi, surtout quand il est organisé, le reflet de conceptions politiques et sociales. Et parce qu’elles sont évolutives, il est indispensable d’en retracer les développements historiques.

Ce questionnement vient à la fois heurter les stéréotypes d’une période jugée à tort comme verticale et offrir une compréhension de la mise en place de la contestation à cette époque : qui conteste le pouvoir ? Avec quels objectifs ? Avec quelles stratégies d’écriture ? Quelle position est attribuée au lecteur ?

  De-centering the history of international and transnational organisations: archives, methods, and new perspectives

  This workshop seeks to explore how different methodological approaches to international and transnational organisations can bring new histories into view. Rather than approaching international and transnational organisations from a strictly institutional point of view, we, instead, wonder how these organisations and their archives can become the basis for telling other, local, regional or international, stories that shift the focus to the broader context in which these organisations operated. By going beyond the institutional histories the workshop probes to re-evaluate the historiographical position of these organisations, while maintaining a clear view of the historian’s placement, challenges and limits.

  Aux croisements des bouleversements écologiques et numériques

  Regards pragmatistes sur les connexions, déconnexions et reconnexions contemporaines

  Depuis une trentaine d’années, deux processus contribuent à reconfigurer en profondeur les sociétés contemporaines : la montée en puissance des enjeux écologiques et le déploiement des mondes numériques. Les spécificités comme les interactions de ces deux transformations orientent fortement les « diagnostics du présent » et de fait des événements inédits, qualifiés de « crises » ou de « catastrophes », se succèdent. C’est pour faire le point collectivement sur les concepts, les outils et les terrains forgés aux points de recoupement, de recouvrement ou de friction de ces deux processus, que nous proposons de nous réunir et d’examiner, par la discussion, comment les sociologies pragmatiques contribuent à décrire et analyser les différentes manières dont les acteurs (ré)habitent le monde, en étant parfois pris entre des ontologies et des axiologies opposées.

  Les terrains israélo-palestiniens : enjeux méthodologiques, épistémologiques et politiques

  Cette journée d’étude s’inscrit dans la continuité d’un courant de réflexion s’intéressant aux défis du terrain au Proche et au Moyen-Orient, et a pour objectif de se consacrer particulièrement aux espaces israélo-palestiniens comme terrains de recherche. Soumis à des dominations impériales, mandataires et coloniales et traversé par de concurrentes revendications nationalistes, ce territoire est, depuis la fin du XIX^e siècle, le théâtre d’une colonisation qui modifie régulièrement l’espace et l’organisation sociale. Quelles sont les problématiques auxquelles doivent faire face les chercheur·es travaillant sur les terrains israélo-palestiniens ? Quels sont les effets et les apports de ces difficultés sur le façonnement de l’objet d’étude, mais aussi sur le positionnement et la représentation du ou de la chercheur·e ?

  Les femmes dans les processus de paix et de sécurité en Afrique

  From the Women’s Decade instituted by the UN between 1975 and 1985 to the Beijing Conference in 1995 to its evaluation in 2005 at the Beijing +10 meeting in New York, the gender issue has taken an increasingly important place in international meetings on human development. While gender equality is still a topical issue, the debate is shifting towards the role of women in pre- and post-conflict situations, particularly in conflict prevention, mediation, negotiation and resolution. This call for contributions aims to understand the reasons for the absence of women in the decision-making spheres of conflict prevention, mediation and resolution. Moreover, the final objective is to propose solutions for an increased representation of women in these mechanisms.

  The Afterlives of Revolutions

  A Special Issue of “Práticas da História”

  Political and social revolutions are events frequently studied by the discipline of History. However, contributions by historians to the study of the posthumous lives of these events are rarer. This call aims to elicit proposals for articles and essays that focus on the memorialistic trajectories of revolutions. Case studies, historical comparisons, or theory-based approaches may be proposed. The journal Práticas da História also encourages the submission of proposals for articles and essays that focus on how political discourse, commemorative politics, and historical staging have dealt and are dealing with past revolutions, as well as the discussion of issues such as the mobilization of examples, icons, or concepts of past revolutions by revolutionary action. The problem of the inscription (or not) of revolutions in the organics of the regimes that succeed them or, finally, the identification of the beginning/end of a revolution, may also be addressed.

  Memory and identity in the English-speaking world since 1945 : transdisciplinary perspectives on the margins and the mainstream

  The aim of this Study day is to examine the dynamics, interactions and tensions between the polysemic notions of margin and mainstream in post-1945 English-speaking areas. More specifically, we will examine the modalities and dynamics of exchange and movement from one category to the other, as well as the way in which they take on their meaning in varied and variable political, media, sociological and cultural contexts. Proposals may thus highlight thematic issues in relation to the phenomena studied, such as marginalised or militant histories, critical or methodological thoughts about mediation mechanisms, conceptualisation issues or personal and collective positioning.

  The Armenian Genocide: New Interpretations and Cross-Disciplinary Conversations

  The study of the Armenian genocide often remains confined to restricted circles of specialists and interdisciplinarity is too rarely promoted. And, although comparative research is praised, it is frequently reduced to the juxtaposition of case studies. Research on the Armenian genocide is now ready to address more cross-cutting issues and to fully contribute to broader discussions on mass violence. Therefore, this conference asks: how can the social sciences, memory studies, and genocide studies contribute to a broader understanding of the Armenian genocide and its aftermath? And reciprocally: what is the contribution of research on the Armenian genocide to our understanding of mass crimes and to the social sciences?

In addition to this, there are the considerations and knowledge that medieval people had of their fellow human beings and their environment (fauna and trees). Finally, the event proposes to look at these questions in the context of reflections on medievalism. As the issues are diverse, we are making the whole range of humanities and social sciences disciplines.

  Inertia: “plus ça change...”

  This conference will tackle the different facets of the concept of inertia through a transversal and pluridisciplinary approach. A cross-geographical and cross-cultural approach is encouraged. In a society that values change and innovation, inertia is still very present. Political and legal institutions either have to face it or use it actively and strategically. Social movements understand that well as they are using inertia to promote their demands. Inertia can also be a manifestation of a desire of stability, of deliberately not acting in an attempt to stop time. Museums might be an example of that; cultural spaces need to face these contradictions. A rhetoric of inertia can then develop, on a political, legal, social or cultural level. This discourse can be contested or used to promote change or permanence, in a a state of constant and dynamic tension.

  L’objet de cette journée d’étude est de remettre sur l’ouvrage la question du religieux en science politique, en interrogeant les manières dont la discipline se saisit de la question du « religieux » (indépendamment de débats sur ses définitions) depuis les quarante dernières années. Nous souhaitons prolonger des réflexions initiées en sociologie et développées plus récemment en science politique en direction d’un travail à la fois épistémologique et empirique sur la légitimité et les impensés de ces objets. Les contributions de cette journée contribueront à éclairer d’une part l’histoire de la discipline face à un objet « encombrant » et, à partir d’exemples situés et contextualisés, d’apporter des éléments de réflexion sur les usages politistes du religieux.
