Appropriating international spaces and professions. European women and feminists in the 20th century

The workshop focuses on the intersections between the history of international relations, the history of European integration, women’s and gender history, European studies, and gender studies. Since the early 21^st century, historiography on international relations and European integration has undergone profound transformations, enabling the integration of a gender perspective. The workshop has two main objectives. First, it will reassess the field by discussing the theoretical and methodological challenges of approaches at the intersection of the history of international relations, European integration, gender and feminist history, European studies, and gender studies. Second, the workshop will provide a platform for debate around case studies, recent or ongoing empirical work. It is explicitly aimed at PhD candidates and early-career researchers.

En 1971, il y a plus d’un demi-siècle, était créé le ministère de l’Environnement. Cette institutionnalisation concrétise la volonté du gouvernement français d’une « maîtrise plus grande de ‘l’environnement’ », selon l’expression de la lettre de mission du premier ministre du 24 octobre 1969, prélude aux cents l'environnement. Ce colloque se propose de revenir sur ce processus de mise en gouvernement de l’environnement, en croisant la socio-histoire de l’État, des problèmes et politiques publiques avec l’histoire environnementale, et en se focalisant sur un moment court et constitutif : de 1969 à 1977.

Roger Louis et l’aventure Scopcolor (1968-1976)

Créée dans le sillage de Mai 68 et de la grève à l’ORTF, la Société coopérative ouvrière de presse (Scopcolor) a assuré, telle une agence de presse filmée indépendante, la production et la distribution d’un magazine d’information en 16 mm et en couleur baptisé Certifié exact. La vingtaine d’émissions réalisées entre 1969 et 1972 constitue une production audiovisuelle unique, à la croisée du « reportage de société, du documentaire politique et du document pédagogique », sur des sujets de fond qui, partant de l’actualité immédiate, intéressent l’ensemble de la société. Centrée sur la création, l’organisation et les réalisations de Scopcolor, cette journée d’étude cherchera à interroger le projet qui sous-tend cette société de presse et de production, sa place dans le contexte des années 1968 et dans le parcours de son fondateur, le reporter et producteur Roger Louis (1925-1982), les spécificités du magazine d’information qu’elle a produit et du circuit de diffusion et d’animation qu’elle a contribué à mobiliser à travers la France. En complément des films eux-mêmes, elle prendra appui sur des fonds d’archives, ainsi que sur la parole de témoins, actrices et acteurs de cette expérience hors-norme.

How can comparison and historical perspective on these two issues help us better understand their political, legal, and social dimensions? The aim of our proposal is, in fact, to highlight them, while at the same time trying not to overlook the differences, starting with the social structure of the two populations and their identity construction.

The case of four “latecomers” (Germany, Italy, Belgium and Japan), 1880s-1940s

We seek original contributions that, through the lens of the politics of comparison, focus on four “latecomer empires,” namely Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Japan that started their colonial expansion at the end of the nineteenth century. In these countries and their colonies and protectorates, heated debates took place around the search for (historical or current foreign) models, and politicians, activists, and intellectuals often demanded the transimperial circulation of colonial knowledge, be it legal, political, or scientific. In particular, we are interested in two distinct yet bordering fields: models of colonial policies from a global perspective and transimperial circulation of colonial knowledge in scientific fields such as medicine, agronomy, anthropology, legal culture, etc.

Imaginaries of Shady Connections and the Global Underworld from the Nineteenth Century to the Present

Observers of modern life have not always been optimistic about transnational connections. From the nineteenth century to the present day, the cosmopolitan ideal of a united world has been challenged by widespread anxieties about mysterious and dangerous networks. This exploratory conference critically examines the cultural and political significance of these imaginaries of dark networks from the nineteenth century to the present. Drawing on a series of historical case studies, we suggest to take three key features as a point of departure: figures such as traffickers, clandestine migrants, or spies; spaces such as ports, borderlands, or tunnels; and goods such as weapons, counterfeit money, or revolutionary pamphlets.

Implosion des empires et frontières

1914-2024

Le XX^e siècle a vu l’écroulement brutal de trois empires dont les signes de faiblesse étaient cependant de plus en plus évidents : l'empire austro-hongrois, l'empire ottoman puis l'URSS. La première guerre mondiale a été fatale au camp des vaincus parmi lesquels se trouvaient les deux premiers. Ces opérations de dislocation, les deux premières datant d’un siècle, la troisième plus récente, ont laissé derrière elles des bombes à retardement dont certaines ont contribué au désordre international, voire aux guerres d’aujourd’hui. Le retour des guerres balkaniques, l’agression russe contre l’Ukraine et la Géorgie, le conflit du Haut Karabakh, la question palestinienne et la guerre à Gaza ont leurs racines dans la façon dont ont été tracées « des lignes dans le sable » lors de l’implosion des empires. Comprendre les motivations des politiques qui ont démantelé les empires et envisager les autres scénarios qui auraient été possibles permettrait-il d’apaiser les conflits potentiels ou actifs d’aujourd’hui ?

Nous proposons donc ici aux contributrices et contributeurs du dossier de philosopher en partant de Tocqueville pour penser l’individualisme démocratique, de lui reconnaitre ainsi en commun un certain nombre de gestes fondateurs et de prescience quant à la saisie de ce phénomène et à sa puissance de transformations opérant dans tous les registres de l’expérience humaine. Cela n’exige pas de considérer ses écrits comme un corpus clôt et de s’en tenir à une approche littéraliste et exclusive. La principale préoccupation des textes devra être heuristique : penser avec Tocqueville chaque fois que cela éclaire le sujet et l’objet saisis, mais se risquer aussi à penser contre lui chaque fois que nécessaire, c’est-à-dire à la fois en appui sur sa manière de comprendre la démocratie et sur la matière que constitue son œuvre pour aborder des sujets qu’il n’a pas eu à connaitre et à traiter, ou en opposition avec certaines de ses analyses lorsque celle-ci ont été contredites de manières convaincantes ou qu’il semble possible de les juger en tension avec d’autres pans de son œuvre même.

Ces objets ont en effet façonné les processus de mobilisation et de politiation, les sensibilités et les pratiques politiques dans le passé. Il s’agira d’examiner leur rôle dans les contestations des cadres coloniaux et impériaux, dans les mouvements et guerres d’indépendance, dans la construction des sphères politiques et publiques des nouveaux États, mais également dans les mouvements et controverses abolitionnistes et antiesclavagistes.
