CLARA launches a call for papers for its Archives section as well as for its new Position(s) section. This is an open call, which means authors can submit at any time. For their paper to be included in forthcoming issue 12 (2026), authors are however invited to submit their abstract by January 12th 2025.

En cette année 2024, organiser un événement scientifique autour de la patrimonialisation du sport et des équipements sportifs peut sembler de prime abord opportuniste au regard de l’actualité dans ce domaine. Si la tenue imminente des Jeux olympiques à Paris a effectivement fait naître l’idée d’une réflexion autour de ces typologies d’édifices, elle s’est vite enrichie d’un double constat : les lieux de la pratique sportive et de son spectacle sont souvent méconnus et rarement protégés.

Le innumerevoli declinazioni del rapporto tra storia e progetto hanno segnato la cultura architettonica italiana del secondo Novecento, e sono state l’elemento della sua riconoscibilità sulla scena internazionale. Il convegno intende esplorare gli scambi, le tangenze, le sovrapposizioni e gli attriti tra i progettisti – dell’oggetto architettonico quanto della città e del territorio – e gli storici dell’architettura nel contesto culturale, politico, economico e sociale dell’Italia del secondo Novecento.

La connaissance des villes de l’Antiquité tardive a longtemps souffert d’une double difficulté. D’une part, leur histoire fut longtemps mal comprise. Grâce aux renouvellements historiographiques des dernières décennies, on sait aujourd’hui que ce n’est plus le déclin mais la transformation voire la continuité qui caractérisent l’histoire de la ville tardive. D’autre part, les vestiges de ces villes, souvent constitués de spolia et jugés moins significatifs et moins esthétiques, que ceux de la ville du Haut Empire, ont été négligés voire simplemente démontés et dégagés sans enregistrement. Le renouveau des études sur l’Antiquité tardive a permis aujourd’hui d’attirer également l’attention sur cette ville tardive et la nécessaire valorisation de ses vestiges.

Berlin, Paris und weitere europäische Hauptstädte (1939-1945)
Ausgehend von der Feststellung, dass die Architektur- und Stadtplanungsgeschichte der Metropolen im Zeitraum 1939-1945 noch wenig erforscht sind, bietet diese deutsch-französische Sommerschule eine kollektive Diskussion über die Forschungsquellen und den Austausch zwischen den Hauptstädten während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und der militärischen Besetzung an.

Displaying the social history of migrants: content, scenography, public engagement
This conference addresses issues of display and reception, in a museum context, of social history in general and the social history of migrations in particular. The objective is to identify and discuss practices that can best carry across historical contents and reach a broad audience. What are the most suitable approaches to make visitors understand, feel, and project themselves into, the social life of working-class and migrant families of the past? What are the risks associated with the conception and mediation of migration history contents? How should that history be told in order to convey the diversity and inclusivity of historiographical narratives? In what way can people from working-class and migrant backgrounds be included in the exhibition process itself?

Le plus grand congrès réunissant les historiennes et historiens de l'Amérique française aura lieu cette année à Ottawa pour sa 72e édition. Plus de 120 communications aborderont avec des angles, des approches et des questions diverses le thème des Frontière/s. Comment s’exprime, en différentes époques, la notion de frontière en Amérique française? Comment évolue-t-elle au fil des siècles? Quelles sont ses représentations? Quels types de pouvoir impose-t-elle? C’est autour de ces questions que nous engageons les participant.e.s à proposer des pistes d’analyse empiriques, théoriques ou épistémologiques qui permettront de mieux problématiser la frontière.

The permanence and changes of live performance spaces in the city
From 1750 to the present day
Cette journée d'études a pour objectif de faire se rencontrer historiens du théâtre et spécialistes de l’architecture en portant l'attention sur les lieux scéniques, leur place dans la ville, leurs évolutions signalant à la fois des permanences et des mutations significatives. Les travaux porteront sur des études précises de cas soit de lieux, soit de quartiers voués aux spectacles et divertissements, permettant de mettre en évidence le lien et l'impact de ces espaces sur l'histoire de la ville. Les approches choisies pourront concerner des questions cartographiques montrant par exemple l'implantation de ces activités sur une période étendue, des questions architecturales et urbaines mettant en évidence les évolutions des bâtiments, de leur image, ou des questions liées à l'histoire sociale en associant ces mutations à celle des pratiques et des goûts du public.

La modernité comme avènement de la raison instrumentale en architecture pose la question du rapport aux sciences, techniques et humanités tel qu’il a été historiquement construit ou activement recouvré, et tel qu’il acquiert une valeur au travers des discours, conceptions et réalisations des architectes à l’époque contemporaine. Appréhendé le plus souvent à l’ère industrielle comme un enjeu en soi ou comme catalyseur d’inventions (nouveaux objets, procédés/systèmes d’exploitation ou d’organisation) ce rapport interroge dans sa propension à se mouvoir en facteur principal d’innovation et à se constituer progressivement en valeur « expérimentale » ou patrimoniale intrinsèque à un grand nombre de réalisations. Un tel déplacement sémantique renvoie à des mutations réelles, architecturales et urbanistiques, aussi bien sur le plan théorique ou critique qu’en termes de mises en pratiques. Pour l’aborder, le colloque propose d’explorer différentes visions et écritures de la modernité architecturale et urbaine autour des productions de trois architectes – Marcel Lods (1891-1978), Michel Roux-Spitz (1888-1957), Jean Walter (1883-1957).

Les phénomènes coloniaux ont très largement été des phénomènes urbains. De même, la création de territoires urbains (villes nouvelles, infrastructures, settlements, etc.) sont régulièrement qualifiés de « colonial ». Ainsi, au croisement des études urbaines et des études coloniales, cet atelier doctoral envisage donc d'interroger, à l'aune de cas d'étude situés, aussi bien diverses situations coloniales que la prolifération contemporaine des discours qualifiant telle ou telle situation urbaine de « coloniale ».

This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of Mediterranean cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. We would like to broaden the traditional horizons of our disciplines under the issues of our times, questioning the role of historical research and the forms of scientific communication nowadays, when old practices seem more challenged than ever by the overwhelming expansion of new technologies.

The Black Metropolis, between past and future
Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago
The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XXth Century until the contemporary moment.
