En juillet 2024, nous apprenions le décès de l’anthropologue et politiste états-unien James C. Scott, dont les travaux figurent désormais parmi les classiques des sciences sociales. Son œuvre se distingue par l’ampleur de ses enquêtes tout comme par la richesse de ses concepts et leur dimension heuristique. Elle participe à jeter un regard nouveau sur des questions classiques des sciences sociales et de l’anarchisme comme celles de la définition de l’État, du politique, ou encore des modes de domination et de résistance à l’autorité.

Ce colloque international vise à examiner le caractère opératoire et créatif de l’errance en Asie, comprise comme une rupture choisie ou imposée avec un cadre de référence fixe, cadre mental, culturel, territorial, voire spirituel. On se demande ce que produit l’errance, dans quelles conditions, comment elle est pensée par les artistes, les poètes de l’ère classique à la période contemporaine.

Revue internationale des études du développement n°256 (2024-3)

The first aim of this Special Issue is methodological: the renewed interest in development archives raises questions, particularly among young researchers, about how to identify, collect, and use them, and about their limits. The special issue will thus offer a set of methodological reference points to anyone wishing to use such archives. The second aim will be to lay the foundations for a more ambitious project to study development archives from a perspective at the crossroads of “connected history” and “global historical sociology”.

Nous proposons cette journée de recherche dans le but d’explorer les valeurs de l'Asie et leur réalité dans les universités et les entreprises dans une perspective interdisciplinaire autour des questionnements suivants : Quelles valeurs sont-elles enseignées à l’université et pratiquées dans les entreprises asiatiques ? Au vu de la mobilité diplômante internationale, comment l’hybridation des valeurs se concrétise-t-elle au sein des universités en Asie et hors Asie ? Et comment les étudiants font-ils face à ce passage entre valeurs d’enseignement et valeurs d’entreprise ?

Theories and Practices of Federalism

Federalism Conference 2022

The Federalism conference is an international and hybrid conference that seeks to explore one the one hand, normative and historical theories of federalism and, on the other hand, investigate federal practices based primarily on case studies from Asia. With many countries opting for a federal structure of the government, federalism has now become a popular research topic among political scientists and constitutional scholars, leading to the burgeoning of centers and research projects at the international level. Federal ideas and the reality of existing federal states cannot be sharply divided. A comprehensive analysis of institutional philosophical roots can thus help us to further a comprehensive understanding of federal institutions as well as design appropriate analytical tools for investigating elements of multilevel governance systems.

Global Ethics of Compromise

What are the normative assumptions and solutions proposed to develop morally right or wrong compromise typologies? Can we develop a universal ethics of compromise or does compromise vary depending on the socio-cultural history of a country? To what extent is culture relevant in shaping types and norms of compromise? The conference aims, firstly, to understand how to distinguish a compromise from a compromise of principles; what constitutes an ethical or fair compromise? Second, it will analyze if practices of compromise vary from one country to another. To do so, different types of compromise will be explored through geopolitical, philosophical, historical approaches, with a particular focus on Japan and Taiwan. This symposium will examine theoretical issues and practices associated with compromise, by adopting a global perspective. It will bring together contributions from European, American and Asian researchers.

Animal ethics in Asian literature

Special issue of "Impressions d'Extrême-Orient" (IDEO)

Human beings, as well as animals, feel pain…and are therefore sensitive and capable of empathy. The special issue of Impressions d’Extrême-Orient aims to address the issue of animal ethics in Asian literature. Through articles and/or translations of philosophical, historical, spiritual, religious and literary works, this issue endeavours to figure out if ancient and contemporary Asian authors do invite us to think about animal ethics, and if they have imagined another form of human-animal relationship that would not be based on the domination and oppression of other species.

Indonesian Exceptionalism: Values and Morals of the Middle Ground

‘Exceptionalism’ is a borrowed political term that implies that a country or entity is somehow special. Indonesia is not small. Indonesia is not poor in cultures, religions, society, or ethnic groups. Indonesia is not unimportant economically, regionally, or politically. Historically, Indonesia has always been an exceptional place. Indonesia as ‘imagined community’ continues to be an ongoing process. Various questions that can be raised include: What are relevant Indonesian values and morals for maintaining Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global world? What is religion’s contribution to forming agreed values and ethics? To what extent is there an Indonesian contribution in balancing Islamic values and democratic practices? How do religious values impact the ethics of state governance?

Elle sollicite des traductions inédites de textes littéraires en rapport avec ce thème.

Moralists studies group day

Après avoir étudié les modifications de la norme dans le temps, c'est à la confrontation de la norme à l'altérité, géographique et culturelle, que s'intéressera le « groupe d'étude des moralistes » lors de cette journée consacrée aux « modèles et contre-modèles orientaux ». On s'interrogera sur ce que devient la norme européenne quand elle rencontre la réalité orientale, et sur la (les) signification(s) que peut revêtir l'Orient pour la pensée morale aux XVII^e et XVIII^e siècles. On se penchera aussi sur la manière dont est appréhendé le changement (reconnu pour tel dans sa différence, ou bien adapté, et donc réduit, à ce qui est perçu comme une norme), ainsi que sur la façon dont il peut être exploité dans la polémique contre la (les) norme(s) de l'Occident chrétien.
