  Conference in honor of Paul Perdrizet for the 80th anniversary of his passing

  For the 80th anniversary of Paul Perdrizet's death, the University of Lorraine organises an international symposium on the life and work of the renowned archaeologist and art historian.All the different aspects of his biography will be discussed, from his early epigraphical and archaeological research in Greece, Macedonia and Cyprus, in the 1890's, to his Late Medieval Studies on the cult of saints in the 1930's, his works on greco-roman Egypt, but also his notable role in local politics and industry in Nancy and Strasburg.

  Image, history and memory

  Genealogies of memory in Central and Eastern Europe

  Images as witnesses to history, materialized memories or their active co-creators? The multi-faceted relationship between the past and its visual representations will be the main focus of the 7th edition of the international genealogies of memory conference to be held in Warsaw on 6-8 December. The agenda features inter alia lectures by Ernst van Alphen, Robert Hariman, Constantin Parvulescu and Wojciech Suchocki, as well as Mieke Bal leading the tour of her own video-installations entitled “Dis-Remembered: A Long History of Madness” and “Mis-Remembered: Reasonable Doubt”.

  Meetings, Conflicts, Exchanges: Mediterranean Space in the Middle Ages

  Fernand Braudel writes in his The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II: “The Mediterrenean has no unity but that created by the movements of men, the relationships they imply, and the routes they follow” [1972: 276]. The position of the Mediterranean, at the intersection of three continents, has made it a vital location in these movements of men, women and children. These movements continue, sometimes with tragic consequences, to this day. In the Middle Ages, the meeting of peoples and cultures enabled the exchange of ideas, traditions, texts, languages, and things.

  Se l’importanza di Agostino per alcuni autori trecenteschi italiani è fatto auto-evidente, basti pensare a Francesco Petrarca che lo scelse come suo inquisitore e guida spirituale nel Secretum, la lunga durata di questa influenza nel corso del secolo è ancora in gran parte da esplorare, a partire dal caso più contestato, quello di Dante Alighieri. Parallelamente questo convegno s’interesserà al modo in cui l’attività dei membri dell’OESA ha plasmato la vita culturale peninsulare nel corso del secolo e contribuirà a rimettere in questione le categorie storiografiche di agostinismo e anti-agostinismo.

  Criticism and utopia

  Après « L’épreuve des sens » en 2016, puis « L’esprit des lieux » au début de cette année, le Groupe d’histoire des forêts françaises entend clôturer sa trilogie « Forêt, arts et culture » en scrutant les critiques et utopies exprimées par les ambiances et sensibilités forestières. Les séances précédentes ont permis de baliser la diversité de mise en scène de la forêt dans des sociétés très diverses et de mettre en évidence les enjeux cachés de sa présence dans une œuvre. Il s’agit cette fois de révéler les mutations sociétales et les engagements politiques qui en font l’arrière-plan.

  Le colloque « Pierre à pierre II » a pour objectif de centrer les réflexions sur la vallée mosane, célèbre pour ses ressources lithiques, et dont les tronçons de la Meuse moyenne comme de la basse Meuse constituent depuis l’Antiquité l’une des artères économiques majeures dans cette région d’Europe. Dans le prolongement des débats du premier cycle de conférences qui s'est tenu à Nancy en 2015, le colloque « Pierre à pierre II » souhaite privilégier trois grands axes thématiques : la géographie de la pierre (axe 1), la pierre sur le chantier de construction (axe 2) et, enfin, la pierre en tant que mobilier ou élément décoratif (axe 3).

  Scaling. What happens when we scale things up or down?

  Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018

  The 2018 session will be devoted to the investigation of scale and scaling as operative concepts for the analysis of media. What happens when we scale? Does anything really change? Can scaling ever impact the inner blueprint of an object? Are there laws of scaling? Or does scaling resist any attempt at calculability, such that, to investigate it, we can only ever look at individual events of scaling? As a media practice, scaling is widely used. But, in contrast to the ubiquity of operations, scaling is hardly ever viewed on its own terms as a basic concept of media analysis. The Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018 will attempt to map out approaches to scaling as a basic media-analytical tool.

  Les journées thématiques « De l’humanité de l’humain dans les arts » voudraient interroger l’idée selon laquelle les arts auraient à exprimer quelque chose comme « la réalité humaine elle-même ». En tant que formes originales de pensée – s’hybridant à la matière, à la singularité et à l’outrage – les œuvres pourraient nous mener vers des lieux de sens qui échappent d’abord à l’objectivité et au savoir. Y aurait-il en ces lieux quelque chose comme « l’humanité de l’humain » ? À l’occasion de ces rencontres inter-disciplinaires, arts et sciences auront à unir leurs forces et croiser leurs méthodes pour tenter une réponse.

  Rethinking Music in France during the Baroque Era

  Since the 1974 publication of James Anthony's book French Baroque Music, research about the music that was performed and composed in France during the Baroque era has enriched its knowledge-base and investigative approaches. And yet, studies of French music have noticeably less visibility than those of German or Italian music. The 350th anniversary of François Couperin's birth in 2018 provides an opportunity for researchers and performers to re-evaluate previous work and reflect more broadly on research perspectives for the study of French music of the 17th and 18th centuries. In response to Couperin's Les Goûts réunis and Les Nations, these reflections will relate to a geographical perimeter that extends to international dialogue and will allow new avenues for advancing research to be revealed.

  The italian fascism through the prism of contemporary arts

  Reinterpretations, montages, deconstructions

   

  In a more or less explicit way, daily news bring to our attention the survival of forms and values which rely on fascist imagery. Thinking about fascism through the prism of contemporary arts means to deal with a term whose significance has to be read at least in a double sense: on one hand, the historical experience of the regime that ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943; on the other hand, by extension, the very form of totalitarian power. Contemporary arts’ gaze seems to work on these two different albeit related topics: the Italian fascism as historical event (faced with all the troubles of its memories), and the fascism as the fundamental process of power’s relationship and rituals.

  This interdisciplinary conference discusses the cultural role of European folding fans in art, fashion, and material culture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The conference aims to take a closer look at the pictorial and intermedial interplay of or- namental patterns, figurative elements, and artistic subject matters against the background of European fan manufacture, artistic net- works and international trade. Furthermore, it seeks to closer examine fans as gender-specific instruments of gesture and communication.

  Cathedrals and Mosques: Building Urban Memories and Landscapes in Southern Europe (12th - 14th centuries)

  This international conference will discuss interdisciplinary questions regarding the importance of cathedrals and mosques in the definition of memory and urban landscape in the medieval Mediterranean from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. Our research aims at analysing the role these two buildings played in configuring the urban fabric of the Mediterranean world. One of our primary objectives is to understand how these buildings defined medieval landscape and urban space. How did they modify and condition the social and functional organisation of their urban surroundings? What architectural features contributed to their place in civic memory (decoration, architectural style and building techniques)? We are interested in the place they occupy in their cities’ urban planning and topography.
