En écho à l’exposition Bifurcations Végétales (Centre d’art contemporain La Traverse), cette journée d’études vise à faire dialoguer artistes et chercheur·euses sur l’influence du livre de David Graeber et David Wengrow, Au commencement était… (The Dawn of Everything). Contre les logiques extractivistes du capitalisme, l'essai invite à reconsidérer l’histoire humaine à travers des récits alternatifs, non linéaires, et de possibles bifurcations. Un dialogue franco-brésilien se nouera autour de cette lecture et des enjeux sociaux et écologiques actuels.

The Exploitation of Subsurface Resources in Ancient Greece
The Greek term metallon may refer to either a mine or a quarry, whether used for the extraction of rock, ore, or salt. In this sense, it does not denote the nature of the resources themselves, but rather their shared origin: the subsurface. This common provenance opens the door to a cross-disciplinary reflection on the exploitation and management of such resources in ancient Greece. In recent decades, the study of the past has seen a growing interest in environmental questions. A key dimension of this research concerns the relationship between ancient societies and their environment: how did human groups interact with their surroundings to meet their needs, build infrastructure, or produce everyday objects? In this field, the rise of interdisciplinary approaches – at the intersection of archaeological sciences and historical inquiry – combined with recent methodological advances, has led to major developments in the field.

La revue africaine des sciences de l’Antiquité Sunu Xalaat est une revue électronique universitaire savante internationale en open acess consacrée à l’étude de la Grèce, Rome, Égypte et Afrique noire antiques, mais également aux sociétés traditionnelles contemporaines. Elle est publiée à l’université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar. Elle s’ouvre également aux nouvelles problématiques consacrées à l’étude de la culture des sociétés africaines traditionnelles modernes, à l’étude des similitudes ou différences culturelles africaines, dans diverses disciplines (sociologie, géographie, anthropologie, ethnologie, littérature, sciences du langage, arts, psychologie…).

Climate Change and Human-Environment Interaction in the Caucasus
Geo-bio-archeological and literary perspectives
Joining forces between scientists of different disciplines and countries in order to register the various data about the human interaction with the environment in moments of crisis throughout history, should help us to prepare solutions for this near future. For a proper estimation of the whole chain of (probably catastrophic) events which could affect a country like Georgia, land of the Golden Fleece, we need to consider the whole circuit of the peak water, from the melting glaciers to the high mountain lakes, the river basins, their deltas and the sea. The climatic, geomorphologic, ecologic modellings must be related with ideas from arts and humanities as well as social sciences, in the longue durée, in order to anticipate the societal changes of the next generation. Based on our previous research on the geohistory and geobio-archaeology of the Black Sea, the Colchis lowlands, on rivers – including the mythical Phasis – and lakes, this meeting is intended as a kick-off for future international and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Séminaire BioChronos
Cette nouvelle édition du séminaire BioChronos organisé par le département PAST de l’Institut des sciences de l’évolution de Montpellier réunit, le temps d’une demi-journée, des chercheurs en Histoire, bioarchéologie et paléo-environnements pour appréhender l’évolution des environnements littoraux méditerranéens au cours des temps historiques. A partir de deux fenêtres géographiques, à savoir la France méridionale et le Nord-Est du littoral adriatique, les trois disciplines croiseront leurs résultats pour dresser un bilan actualisé de l’état des faunes et flores des deux derniers millénaires et de l’impact des sociétés humaines sur celles-ci.

Some Case Studies from the Roman and Late Antique Periods
The collection of case studies which were presented in 2018 and 2020 as part of the DANUBIUS project gave rise to a whole series of new historical questions and unexpected results. Some of the main elements of the dossier will be published in a supplement to the Frontière·s journal. The aim of this call for papers is to complete this dossier with some new cases studies, mainly for the regions that were not represented or less represented during the 2018 and 2020 workshops: Britain, Gaul, Germany, Caucasus, North-Eastern Anatolia, the Middle East and Egypt.

Political space in ancient times: representation, description, transformation
This conference aims to develop a reflection on the links between space and politics in ancient times, using an interdisciplinary approach. While archaeologists and historians have been interested in the ways in which space can be a political object, what is missing is a general reflection that would show the contribution of a spatial approach to politics in Classics. To renew our thinking on political space, we will compare the practices of archaeology, whose field of study is resolutely linked to space, and history, whose approach is often more political, with those of literature and philology, which have also seized on space as a methodological tool.

Avez-vous pensé à traduire Homère ou Virgile non pas en alexandrins mais en hologrammes peuplant un espace 3D que toutes les sciences de l’Antiquité permettraient de reconstituer ? En visitant un chantier de fouilles ou un musée, avez-vous ressenti la frustration de ne pas pouvoir imaginer la vie des gens dont on conserve les traces ? Amateur de films ou jeux vidéo, vous êtes-vous demandé comment recréer l’île d’Éole ? Philologues, historiens, archéologues, géographes ou paléontologues, nous avons besoin les uns des autres pour comprendre les sites et les peuples antiques. Pour apprendre et construire ensemble cette méthodologie interdisciplinaire, nous discuterons avec nos intervenants des textes et cartes, des recherches de terrain en archéologie et géosciences (géologie, géographie et géomorphologie, géophysique, géochimie, paléobotanique et paléozoologie), des projets cartographiques (SIG, 3D/4D, études de visibilité, reconstitution diachronique des sites, mise en valeur de l’impact anthropique par rapport à l’évolution naturelle).

The objective of this workshop is to engage an open discussion among palaeobotanists (palynologists, dendrochronologists and anthracologists in particular) and historians (studying iconography, written and archaeological sources) to lead to methodological reflection. Our aim is also to question the sources available to study the forest cover and its management, but also to discuss the interpretation of these sources. It is also a matter of highlighting the limits and biases of each method as well as the potential of comparing sources.

Competitive sharing in late Antiquity?
Cette journée d’études se propose de tester, pour les provinces orientales de l’empire romain, la pertinence du modèle du « partage compétitif » élaboré par Robert M. Hayden à partir de terrains d’études contemporains. Les communications porteront sur des sites fréquentés ou simultanément revendiqués par des groupes ou des individus qui se définissent comme appartenant à des traditions cultuelles différentes afin d’y accomplir des rituels. On cherchera à définir les critères qui conduisent au partage ainsi que les dynamiques d’occupation spatiale qui caractérisent ces sites, tout en évaluant la manière dont ils ont pu contribuer à la définition des identités religieuses.

Second conference of young researchers into pre-Roman Italy
Du 10 au 11 mars se tiendra en distanciel la deuxième édition de la rencontre des jeunes chercheurs sur l’Italie préromaine. Elle a pour thème « Dépasser la limite ». Le colloque est pluridisciplinaire. Au cours de cinq sessions, différents aspects de la limite seront discutés sur l’ensemble du territoire de l’Italie de l’âge du Fer au principat d’Auguste : frontières et enceintes, bornes, questions de territoire et de paysage, échanges et culture matérielle, questions de genre, mondes funéraires et sacrés, et méthodes. Cela sera suivi d’une table-ronde, où les enjeux épistémologiques pourront être abordés dans le cadre des sciences de l’Antiquité et au-delà.

Au travers de recherches récentes, seront présentées les différentes formes que peuvent arborer les installations destinées à gérer les eaux indésirables tant en milieu urbain que rural. On se demandera si leurs caractéristiques architecturales sont le fruit de déterminismes environnementaux et culturels ou bien s’il s’agit de véritables modèles standardisés, qui se développent dans l’ensemble du monde romain. La frontière est parfois difficile à saisir entre réseau d’alimentation et réseau d’évacuation. Ce colloque propose donc de présenter les infrastructures non pas pour elles-mêmes mais dans l’optique de les intégrer au sein d’un réseau hydraulique cohérent, afin de comprendre les liens et les limites qui existent entre les réseaux d’alimentation et d’évacuation. Enfin, d’un point de vue méthodologique, on s’intéressera aux apports de l’étude de ces aménagements pour l’identification des espaces qu’ils traversent.

Paths, mobilities and circulations in Brittany from the Bronze Age to the present day
Diachronic and pluridisciplinary approaches
Ce colloque réunira des chercheurs en archéologie, en histoire et en géographie qui travaillent sur la question des routes et chemins bretons, de l'âge du Bronze à nos jours. Cette approche diachronique et pluridisciplinaire n'est jamais mise en œuvre dans les colloques portant sur ce thème, privilégiant une entrée périodisée. Deux sessions permettront de faire le point sur l'état des connaissances sur le réseau viaire breton et ses usages à travers le temps. Une dernière session sera quant à elle consacrée à la question des enjeux sociétaux contemporains, en matière de recherche, de gestion du patrimoine, d'aménagement du territoire, de valorisation touristique et de médiation culturelle. Outre des communications sur ces aspects, une table ronde réunissant plusieurs personnalités importantes de la scène régionale clôturera le colloque pour développer une discussion de nature prospective.

Occupying Space during Bronze and Iron Ages: From site to landscape
6th Doctoral Meetings of the European School of Protohistory of Bibracte
Archaeology and Space have always been intrinsically connected. On one hand, different attributes of the environment affected human beings forcing them to adapt their behaviour in order to succeed, while on the other, in doing so, communities have influenced their surrounding spaces by transforming them, in some cases irreversibly. As all human actions are by definition immersed in space, for this year’s meeting we have decided to approach the questions of understanding and interpreting these complex processes looking through the prism of scale on which they happen. The extent of these ranges from the processes that occur on the small levels in the spaces of archaeological sites extending to the larger levels when dealing with the narrative of cultural landscapes. Sessions will provide reflection on the social and spatial aspects of archaeological sites and landscapes and will incorporate themes related to subsistence, economy, social behaviour and ideology within the timespan of the European Bronze and Iron Ages.
