Devant les émergences polymorphes de la Terre promise, nous proposons dans ce colloque de réfléchir aux manifestations et à la signifiance de ce concept dans le domaine de la fiction narrative contemporaine espagnole. Est-il possible de parler de réécritures de ce que l’on est amené à considérer comme un mythe biblique ? Dans quelles mesures est-il envisageable d’en évoquer la déconstruction, la reconstruction ou la régénération ? Les représentations modernes de ce territoire ancestral s’inscrivent-elles dans un principe de continuité avec le récit originel ou subissent-elles de profondes mutations renouvelant l’imaginaire qui lui est traditionnellement associé ?

Ideas of Europe and Images of Russia. From the Eighteenth Century to the Present

XV Annual Conference of the Research Network on the History of Idea of Europe

(Western) European perceptions of and discourses about Russia tell us much more about Europe’s self-perceptions (and delusions) than about Russia itself. And the same holds true for Russian views about Europe. Underlying such a complex identity-formation processes is an often troublesome intellectual dialogue between Europe and Russia, between two closely entwined entities. One of the purposes of this international conference, is to shed light on such a dialogue, discern its main elements, and its untold assumptions and underlying prejudices. The overall aim is to examine how images of Europe and discussions about Russian identity have interacted and influenced each other. Embracing a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach, the conference aims to engage intellectual, cultural, social, and art historians as well as literary scholars and political theorists.

Autour du « Grabuge » : évocation des films mystérieux, sulfureux, désavoués, oubliés, perdus

En 1968, le cinéaste français Edouard Luntz (1931-2009) réalise Le Grabuge, film franco-brésilien, produit par la 20th Century Fox et scénarisé par le sociologue rochelais Jean Duvignaud (1921-2007). Le film, l’auteur et le scénariste ont un point commun : ils sont oubliés, voire reniés, en dépit du fait qu’ils ont laissé des traces dans la culture et le patrimoine français et même international. Il nous semble que remettre sur le devant de la scène ces œuvres et figures marginales et oubliées est légitime et éclairant dans un environnement culturel souvent enclin à la reproduction et au discours aseptisé. L’objectif de cette journée d’étude est non seulement de révéler un fragment du patrimoine cinématographique, mais aussi d’évoquer et d’encourager l’étude des origines mythologiques, des répercussions sociologiques, culturelles, géographiques,… des films mystérieux, sulfureux, désavoués, oubliés, perdus.

Histories of Photography from the Struggles for Independence: practices, circulations and aesthetics

It's a well-known fact that the history of photography as a discipline has for the most part been constructed as that of "Western" photography, more specifically that of Europe and the United States. Between the introduction of so-called "extra-Western" photographers on the contemporary art market since the 1990s and the numerous works on the history of the medium during colonial periods, there is still a lack of information on the history of photography from the liberation and independence struggles onwards, from a global and transnational perspective, across all geographical zones. The aim of this colloquium is to highlight the histories of photography generated during the processes of decolonization, while rethinking methodological and aesthetic approaches to the medium that are still too Western-centric.

Mais cette révolution s’inscrit dans le contexte international post-1968 avec une Guerre froide en phase de détente, dont elle est également le produit. Elle a exercé un fort attrait sur la scène internationale, au point de devenir source d’inspiration. À l’occasion du 50e anniversaire du 25 avril 1974, cette journée d’étude dresse un état des lieux et quelques perspectives de recherche sur la dimension internationale du printemps portugais.

The global musical instrument market: making, trading and collecting in the 19th century and the early 20th century

This symposium will explore the global musical instrument market’s various facets from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. The joint study of markets and collections, which grew in parallel and fed off each other during the period, aims to map the flows of instruments, the places and the players who put them into circulation from the perspective of a global history of music and material cultures. Upstream, the goal is to explore the provenance of the materials used in making instruments. Downstream, the reflection will focus on acquisition methods in the colonial context, instrument-makers’ sales strategies, the role of world’s fairs and colonial exhibitions, the social uses of instruments and the representations associated with them.

Architecture of the Past: inspiration for the Future

Architecture, in response to universal needs, has developed in various forms, in diverse environments, and consequently offers a multiplicity of solutions. This diversity of construction types is of interest to numerous disciplines that do not often have the opportunity to exchange ideas. The aim of this interdisciplinary event is to bring together archaeologists, historians, architects, artisans, conservators, restorers, and ethnologists to share their work and research on architectural practices and structures that are relevant to approach current and future environmental, social, and economic challenges. This event will also discuss how the architecture of tomorrow is also invented with an eye to the past, whether it be sophisticated or vernacular, regardless of materials, period, or geographical and cultural area. A list of themes are suggested and detailed in the full call for proposal.

Quelles nouvelles ? Les écrivains naturalistes et la « course folle à l’information » (1870-1914)

Au XIX^e siècle, l’information circule de plus en plus vite, grâce notamment à l’essor de la presse. Zola constate ce phénomène lorsqu’il parle de « course folle à l’information ». Plus largement, les auteurs naturalistes voient dans le développement croissant de l’information à la fois une manière d’accéder à la réalité mais aussi une façon de diffuser leurs œuvres. Pourtant, ce rapport enthousiaste à l’information n’est pas dénué d’ambivalence. Certains déplorent le trop-plein de nouvelles et le rythme effréné de la presse. La pensée, sous le flot de l’information, perdrait de sa valeur. Ce colloque se propose donc d’étudier le rapport des auteurs et autrices du naturalisme à la nouvelle, en tant que discours à la fois recherché mais aussi questionné, de 1870 à 1914. L’approche se veut transdisciplinaire (littérature, linguistique, histoire, sociologie, science des médias et didactique) et transnationale (Europe néolatine et Amérique du Sud).

Les relations internationales en Europe centrale et orientale depuis 1990

L’Europe dite centrale et orientale, cette Europe de « l’entre deux », est souvent décrite comme le parent pauvre de la recherche en langue française, or il est possible d’assister ces dernières années à un retour sur le devant de la scène de cette « autre Europe », et tout particulièrement depuis l’éclatement de la guerre en Ukraine. Depuis 1989-1990, les relations internationales en Europe centrale et orientale ont connu d’importants bouleversements pour cet espace longtemps considéré comme périphérique. Cette journée d’étude invite ainsi à prendre les pays postsocialistes comme objet de prospection dans le domaine des relations internationales et d’interroger leurs dynamiques propres et leurs spécificités, en dépit de leur hétérogénéité. La coopération, les tensions, les trajectoires empruntées, les dynamiques géopolitiques, de même que les interactions avec d’autres espaces, sont autant de thématiques placées au cœur de la journée d’étude.

Land Use and Consumption in a Historical Perspective

Definitions, Concepts, and Methods

The relationship between societies and soil is intrinsic to human history. Nowadays, this relationship is strongly defined by land use and consumption practices that, at different scales, increasingly threaten the common good and the biodiversity conservation. Urban planning interventions and intensive forms of production lead to the fragmentation, erosion, and ultimately, transformation of soil into a commodity, a freely usable “raw material,” rather than recognizing it as a non-reproducible good. In such a context, a revision of the evolution of concepts of use, consumption, and artificialization of the soil can contribute to a better understanding of the perspectives and rhetoric developed over time and in relation to contemporary challenges.

This symposium aims to contribute to a better understanding of the "professional worlds" of architectural ornament, by fostering a dialogue between two dynamic fields of research that have hitherto rarely been connected: the history of ornament and the history of professions linked to architecture and construction. Resolutely positioned on the side of craftspeople and professional practices, the various contributions will focus on: the spectrum of ornamental professionals; the relationships between professions and the concrete organization of production chains; and finally, the circulation of people, techniques, and material elements. Covering a wide range of geographical and cultural areas, they will cover a broad contemporary period – from the 18th century to the 2010s.

Technocritique(s). Reflection upon 3.3 million years of human technical externalization

Wherever digital solutions and artificial intelligence (AI) have spread, whatever the creative domain or human activity, the impression of having a total, even universal, all-terrain technology has never been so strong. We cannot ignore that the digital revolution, while apparently offering simplicity and ease-of-use is accompanied by a rather remarkable invisibilization of technology’s infrastructure, leaving its users ignorant to the processes and material elements that encompass even the simplest tools. Homo comfort, as the Italian anthropologist Stefano Boni calls it, lives in a hypertechnological world, in which he is ignorant of most of its systems. How can one understand the least-effort infrastructure in which we live when recontextualized within nearly 3.3 million years of technological externalization ? Were 3.3 million years of experimentation necessary to arrive at this point, or rather, did we need to collectively forget our entire history in order to accept our current situation?
