Perspectives from the Social Sciences and Humanities
This thematic issue explores the role of photography in social science research methods from the late 19th century to the present, with an ethnographic focus on the processes of production and co-production of fieldwork data. Whilst the intertwining of the medium with the renewal of modes of scientific observation and gaze in the 19th and 20th centuries is now well established, the past and current development of visual practices at the intersection of the social sciences and photography has, for its part, been explored more recently. Building on these works, this issue aims to follow the long-term evolution of ethnographic research methods involving and/or using photography, as well as the gradual development of its contemporary forms. What constitutes a (photographic) inquiry, and for whom? What roles do fieldworkers, ethnographer-photographers, and the institutions that oversee and commission inquiries play in it?

The history of the chemical industry has long attracted scholarly attention and continues to do so today. This workshop reflects on the current state of the historiography, including its implications for other areas of research. Focusing on Northwest Europe and its connections to other regions, the workshop provides a forum to discuss works in progress and identify avenues for future research. Les périodiques satiriques, et plus globalement la caricature, vivent de l’actualité, des questions de société et des dérives du monde, quelle que soit l’échelle sociétale ou géographique de celles-ci, et le jeu s’y est installé comme un topos visuel. Le mode de présence de ce dernier est cependant varié. Le jeu est certes montré pour lui-même mais plus souvent utilisé comme une grille de lecture sociétale, morale ou politique.

This dossier aims to bring together original scholarly contributions that deepen our understanding of associationism in its multiple dimensions, privileging approaches that combine methodological rigour with empirical and analytical breadth. Proposals may be based on specific case studies or comparative analyses and should critically engage with the nature of associationism and its impact on contemporary societies. Contributions drawing on unpublished primary sources or offering innovative reinterpretations of well-known documentary corpora are particularly welcome.

Unlike the often-speculative analyses of many experts, this conference aims to examine the relationship between diplomats, diplomacies, and sport by analyzing sources (archives, interviews, etc.), with a focus on its forms, practices, and the actors who shape them. The theme of sport and international relations has remained a largely overlooked area in scholarly research within history, international relations, and organizational sociology.

Elle complètera le propos de l’exposition « Vivre ou survivre. Travail et pauvreté aux XIXe et XXe siècles », présentée du 5 juin 2025 au 31 mai 2026, qui s’arrête aux années 1990, en proposant un espace de parole pluridisciplinaire, dans une perspective historique qui s'étendra jusqu'aux enjeux actuels.

Les personnages de méchants dans la fiction (XIXe-XXIe siècles)
Que ce soit dans les discours critiques informels ou les productions fictionnelles, le « méchant » est une notion féconde mais souffre cependant d’une cruelle absence dans les théories du récit. L’objectif de ce colloque est de proposer des pistes poétiques et historiques pour conceptualiser la notion de « méchant » au sein de nombreux médiums (romans, théâtre, bande dessinée, cinéma, série télévisée, jeu vidéo) et ainsi remédier à la lacune théorique dont elle souffre. Au croisement des études historiques, culturelles, esthétiques et morales, l’ambition de ce colloque est de souligner les dynamiques et lignes de tension qui font du « méchant » une notion féconde.

This conference aims to think through this mirror effect of photographed photographs, by consid- ering together images of domestic worlds and everyday image practices anchored in the dwelling.

L’ironie est impalpable et par définition quasiment indéfinissable, parce qu’elle se fonde sur une adéquation jamais nette au réel, sur une compréhension complice et sur l’attaque d’un système de croyances. C’est pourquoi elle a besoin d’instruments comme l’intertextualité et le style indirect libre, capables de brouiller l’identité et l’origine de la parole en s’en désolidarisant et en multipliant les citations et les échos d’autrui. Comment construire alors le mécanisme ironique en poésie ? Comment penser le rapport a priori contre-intuitif entre poésie et ironie ?

Tele-Phonies: Listening at a Distance in the Arts and Auditory Cultures
Drawing from the hypothesis of an entanglement between auditory cultures, regimes of perception, and techniques of listening, the study day Tele-Phonies proposes to analyze the arts and cultures of listening through the plural notion of distance. The aim is to consider not only telephone and radio networks, but also a broader set of mediated practices of listening at a distance—within or on the margins of these networks—in order to grasp their impact on the sonic arts and auditory cultures.

Usages de l’intelligence artificielle dans les pratiques informationnelles africaines
L’objectif est de s’interroger sur les différentes formes d’adoption de l’intelligence artificielle par les producteurs de l’information en Afrique et le déploiement ou l’incorporation des outils d’IA dans les procédés de production et de diffusion de l’information sur tous les supports (presse écrite, radio, télévision et Web). Dans les contextes médiatiques africains, si les IA ne bénéficient pas encore d’une intégration systématique et assumée au procédés éditoriaux dans les rédactions, elles demeurent toutefois des possibilités éditoriales.

Actors and representations of the safeguard of nature in mountain areas: a global perspective (late 18th – early 21st century)
The aim of this international scientific conference is to examine the progressive integration of the environmental protection theme into the several mountain ranges of the Earth, between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 21st century, concluding in 2022, the International Year of Mountains. By selecting a global perspective, it encourages a decentring of observation points, which in turn brings to light not only the diversity of trajectories but also the possible (direct or indirect) circulation of knowledge, materials, practices and individuals in the different mountain ranges.

Faire couple en littérature, de 1880 à nos jours
Sociohistoire, pratiques et représentations d’une institution littéraire
Alors que la conjugalité, l’amour et l’hétéronormativité ont fait l’objet d’importants travaux dans les études de genre et la sociologie dans les dernières décennies, la notion de couple a bien souvent été ignorée, voire déconsidérée dans la critique littéraire, où elle s’est vue volontiers associée à un registre anecdotique, voire à une certaine forme de voyeurisme. Ce colloque consacré aux couples dans le champ littéraire, de la fin du xixe siècle à aujourd’hui, vise à pallier ce manque, en mettant au centre des réflexions une unité d’analyse située entre l’individu et le groupe, deux échelles plus traditionnelles dans les études littéraires et en sociologie de la littérature.

« Money, money, money » : religions, capital, finances
La question financière est l’un des lieux à partir duquel il est possible de saisir les processus de modernisation (et de résistances à la modernisation) qui touchent les religions à l’époque contemporaine. Le problème renvoie à des enjeux de natures très diverses. Se pose d’abord une question qui ressort de l’histoire économique : celle de l’argent des religions et, plus généralement, de leurs possessions. Un autre axe de recherche potentiellement fécond est celui de l’histoire des représentations. Le lien entre certaines religions et l’essor du capitalisme a ainsi pu être souligné, que ce soit pour le saluer, pour le dénoncer ou simplement pour y voir un facteur explicatif de certains processus historiques.
