Le colloque international « Le spectacle au prisme des métiers de photographe (XIXe-XXe siècles) », organisé du 4 au 6 novembre 2026 à la Université Sorbonne Nouvelle et à la Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, propose d’analyser le rôle central de la photographie dans la représentation et la diffusion des arts du spectacle.

This workshop seeks to explore the links between preaching and socio-humanitarian action in the contemporary Middle East. Contexts of social and humanitarian crises appear as privileged sites for understanding this constitutive device of faith experiences, beyond the sole framework of the sermon or religious discourse. The chosen approach is deliberately cross-cutting: it brings Islam, Judaism, and Christianity into dialogue, while situating the Middle East within a global perspective. How does preaching accompany and shape social and humanitarian action? In what forms and according to which modalities does it unfold? How does it influence the understanding and implementation of aid?

“Colonial Communities” in the Mediterranean between Italian Unification and the Occupation of Libya
The trilingual conference “Colonial Communities” in the Mediterranean between Italian Unification and the Occupation of Libya seeks to address a still relatively unexplored topic: the study of Italian communities abroad, with particular attention to the Mediterranean world in the period between national unification (1861) and the occupation of Libya (1911). At the core of this reflection lies the close, and not merely chronological, relationship between the migratory dynamics that characterized the early decades of unified Italy and the rise of colonial expansionism. The seminar therefore aims to investigate this connection through the specific lens offered by the Italian presence in North Africa and in the Ottoman Empire before the occupation of Libya.

British Travel Writing and Imperial Rivalry in Europe and the Near East, 1783–1914
This conference aims to interrogate some of these British visions of rival empires in narrations published between 1783 and 1914. It would be interesting to analyse the practice of imagined colonialism, that is, how the British travellers cast a domineering gaze upon their imperial rivals when travelling in lands that were not colonies of the British crown.

Ce colloque propose d’analyser la constitution des collections publiques et privées des biens culturels extra-européens autour du bassin méditerranéen. Depuis l’Antiquité, et jusqu’au monde contemporain, la Méditerranée demeure un carrefour stratégique de la circulation des biens, des personnes et des idées, un « espace-mouvement » comme l’a défini Fernand Braudel. Les villes ports (Marseille, Toulon, Gênes, Barcelone…) constituent les plaques tournantes pour l’arrivée des objets et leur diffusion auprès des marchands, avant leur « mise en collection », voir leur patrimonialisation dans les institutions.

On 10 October 2025, we will bring together historians from Eurasia and Africa (19th and 20th centuries) to reflect on the concept of peripheral archives and how the production/preservation/use of archives located on the periphery or margins (geographical, political, global or national, family archives, village archives, non-state institutions, the Global South, etc.) informs the writing of history.

Seconde journée d’étude
Le programme CartAsia, lancé en 2024 dans le cadre du plan quadriennal de la recherche de la Bibliothèque nationale de France, étudie un important corpus cartographique en provenance d’Asie de l’Est conservé dans les collections de la Bibliothèque. Mené par le département des Cartes et plans, avec l’appui de nombreux partenaires scientifiques et institutionnels en France et dans le monde, il a pour objectif de faire connaître et donner accès à cet ensemble dispersé et jusqu’ici difficile à identifier. Cette seconde journée d’étude se penche sur le corpus coréen et sur les grandes collections de cartographie d’Asie de l’Est conservées dans les institutions parisiennes.

Lexis, framing, timings, 19th‒21st century in the Middle East
Is preaching consubstantial with crisis? Did the different religious traditions present in the Middle East come to grip with the notion of crisis during the contemporary period? This workshop examines the similarities and divergences between preaching endeavours by the different religious traditions and the transformations in religious discourse in the Middle East from the end of the 19th century onwards. Through a comparative and diachronic analysis, it aims to identify what "constitutes a crisis" for particular religious actors at a given moment in the contemporary history of the Middle East (e.g. military defeat, feelings of inferiority vis-à-vis Europe, demographic decline of a given religious group, secularisation of institutions, rise of atheism, etc.)

Soirée dédiée aux trajectoires d’étudiant·es étranger·es aux Beaux-Arts
De David à Delacroix, de Cézanne à Matisse, d’Ellsworth Kelly à Gina Pane en passant par Hélène Delprat, les Beaux-Arts de Paris ont accueilli plusieurs dizaines de milliers d’aspirants-artistes entre 1780 à 1980, dont de nombreux étudiant·es étranger·es. Dans le cadre de l'exposition « Souvenirs de jeunesse », une soirée dédiée aux trajectoires de ces étudiant·es est organisée, réunissant table-ronde et performance.

Implosion des empires et frontières
1914-2024
Le XXe siècle a vu l’écroulement brutal de trois empires dont les signes de faiblesse étaient cependant de plus en plus évidents : l'empire austro-hongrois, l'empire ottoman puis l'URSS. La première guerre mondiale a été fatale au camp des vaincus parmi lesquels se trouvaient les deux premiers. Ces opérations de dislocation, les deux premières datant d’un siècle, la troisième plus récente, ont laissé derrière elles des bombes à retardement dont certaines ont contribué au désordre international, voire aux guerres d’aujourd’hui. Le retour des guerres balkaniques, l’agression russe contre l’Ukraine et la Géorgie, le conflit du Haut Karabakh, la question palestinienne et la guerre à Gaza ont leurs racines dans la façon dont ont été tracées « des lignes dans le sable » lors de l’implosion des empires. Comprendre les motivations des politiques qui ont démantelé les empires et envisager les autres scénarios qui auraient été possibles permettrait-il d’apaiser les conflits potentiels ou actifs d’aujourd’hui ?

Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) et un autre XIXe siècle, nouvelles approches
Jean-Léon Gérôme nait à Vesoul le 11 mai 1824. À 16 ans, il commence sa formation artistique à Paris. À partir de 1847, il expose au Salon où il remporte un franc succès. En 1864, il devient professeur de peinture à l’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris et dirige l’un des quatre ateliers de peinture de l’école. Il est ensuite élu membre de l’Institut. Extrêmement prolifique tout au long de sa vie, l’artiste nourrit sa créativité par des voyages en Égypte et dans l’empire Ottoman. Porte-étendard de la peinture orientaliste et académique, il s’oppose farouchement aux impressionnistes. Deux siècles après sa naissance, le colloque interroge sa carrière fructueuse et élargit les discussions pour inclure la question du monde artistique au XIXe siècle.

12th Annual MUBIT Doctoral Workshop in Late and Post-Ottoman Studies
The Annual MUBIT Doctoral Workshop in Late- and Post-Ottoman Studies is a two-day workshop in Basel, Switzerland, designed for international doctoral students conducting research on the Near and Middle East. The workshop consists of a two-day, intensive program in which select students work closely with invited experts. Successful completion of the workshop entitles students to 3 ECTS credits. This year, we are thrilled to host Dr. habil. Nora Lafi of the Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin, to lead our 12th annual workshop on the topic of “The Ottoman Governance of Diversity.”

Du Grand Tour à l’Orient-Express : curiosité, exploration, sociabilité
Au cours de ce colloque, nous nous proposons d’étudier la manière dont les voyageurs sillonnant les Balkans et la Méditerranée orientale, entre le Grand Tour en Orient et l’épopée de l’Orient-Express, ont pu appréhender ces pays, leurs habitants et leurs passés. Nous nous donnons pour but d’explorer les représentations sociales des voyageurs, mais aussi celles des populations visitées. Sans se limiter à reproduire les schémas classiques de compréhension de ces discours, redevables à Edward Saïd, il s’agira d’historiciser, de contextualiser et de décliner ces perceptions ambivalentes en fonction des considérations géopolitiques, des orientations idéologiques, mais aussi des affinités personnelles de ceux qui ont produit ces discours. En parallèle, nous aimerions étudier ces lieux de sociabilité que sont les navires ou et des trains, à l’instar de l’Orient-Express et de son successeur, le Simplon-Orient-Express, ainsi que son prolongement asiatique conduisant en Iraq et en Égypte, le Taurus-Express.

This symposium will explore the global musical instrument market’s various facets from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. The joint study of markets and collections, which grew in parallel and fed off each other during the period, aims to map the flows of instruments, the places and the players who put them into circulation from the perspective of a global history of music and material cultures. Upstream, the goal is to explore the provenance of the materials used in making instruments. Downstream, the reflection will focus on acquisition methods in the colonial context, instrument-makers’ sales strategies, the role of world’s fairs and colonial exhibitions, the social uses of instruments and the representations associated with them.

Around the world. The Nineteenth Century: a long and interconnected period
Le colloque international organisé à Pise les 14 et 15 juin 2024 vise à valoriser les approches les approches transnationales du long XIXe siècle. Il s’agit d’étudier les interractions qui dépassent les frontières des États nations qui sont alors en train de se fixer. L’accent est particulièrement mis sur plusieurs points : les campagnes de mobilisation transnationale et l’analyse des discours et des images ou autres symboles visuels les accompagnant et les légitimant, les supports médiatiques pour les réaliser, les réseaux qui sont en jeu dans leur organisation, ou bien encore les protagonistes à l’œuvre pour l’organisation de ces mobilisations transnationales, y compris à travers l’émergence de leaders et de figures charismatiques.

La philosophie et la question nationale
Prenant comme point de départ l’idée, proposée par Jacques Derrida, de « nationalisme philosophique », ce séminaire a pour but d’interroger la manière dont les différents discours nationaux et nationalistes ont accompagné tant la construction de l’historiographie philosophique moderne que le développement de la philosophie comparée ou interculturelle. La division du monde en « nations philosophiques » constitue aujourd’hui encore le point de départ de tout effort comparatiste et conduit à faire du « dialogue entre traditions » un discours tendant à légitimer les idéologies nationales. Une telle « situation » de la philosophie contemporaine n’est pas sans influencer les pratiques philosophiques et, plus encore, ses cadres institutionnels.
