History and Memory: Epistemological Reinterpretation of Africa's Past in a Post-Colonial Context

“Práticas da História” journal

This special issue of Práticas da História is interested in receiving contributions, referring to colonial and post-colonial African contexts. It is important to better understand what is happening in different African countries, at the level of the Academy but also in other spaces where social memory and history confront each other, and how political, ideological, economic and linguistic factors interfere in those situations. In the case of the former Portuguese colonies, which will soon celebrate 50 years of independence, there are additional factors, such as the later end of colonial rule and the delay in historiography about Africa that occurred until recent decades, both in Portugal and in Brazil.

Monstres et monstruosités

Revue « Dialogues francophones », no 28/2024

Apparentée à l’extraordinaire, à l’étranger, à l’inexplicable, à l’indicible, la question des monstres et des monstruosités a toujours fasciné et intrigué l’individu en stimulant son imaginaire. Visibles ou invisibles, réels ou imaginaires, émanant à la fois de l’humain et de l’animal, ces êtres bizarres sont souvent dotés de superpouvoirs dont ils se servent dans des buts maléfiques. Pour le numéro 28/2024 de la revue Dialogues francophones on invite les contributeurs et les contributrices à approfondir la question de la monstruosité telle qu’elle se présente dans les œuvres littéraires françaises et francophones des XX^e et XXI^e siècles. Dans le cas des monstres, les questions portent surtout sur ce qui est inexplicable, incompréhensible.

The International Recognition of the Armenian Genocide

Memorial, Political, and Geopolitical Stakes of a Decades-Long Unfinished Struggle

The central aim of this international conference is to study how and why, since the end of the Second World War and more significantly since the 1960s, international actors have positioned themselves on the matter of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide—as well as how and why their respective positions have evolved over time. A principal concrete goal will be to analyze and compare the processes of recognizing (or refusing to recognize) the Armenian Genocide across a number of state governments, national and international stakeholders, and institutions at the local or provincial level, in order to understand when, why, and how some adopt clear positions in favor of recognition while others remain ambivalent. Diplomatic relations and geopolitical engagement with Turkey is often cited as a major determinant in navigating these processes; while this is an important factor, it should not mask or overshadow the recognition processes themselves, which are often deeply complex and balance the interests of a multiplicity of stakeholders on the issue.

L’Union européenne et les enceintes internationales : l'Union européenne au service du multilatéralisme ?

Constituant un ordre juridique intégré et autonome, l’Union européenne se distingue des autres organisations internationales, y compris des organisations régionales d’intégration économiques, catégorie juridique dont elle relève pourtant du strict point de vue du droit international. Elle présente en effet des spécificités qui la conduisent, dans le cadre international, à poursuivre ses objectifs, défendre ses intérêts et promouvoir ses valeurs dans le respect du cadre posé par les traités qui la fondent. Ces mêmes traités lui assignent la tâche de contribuer « au strict respect et au développement du droit international » et de « favorise[r] des solutions multilatérales aux problèmes communs, en particulier dans le cadre des Nations unies » . Le colloque se donne pour ambition d’évaluer la contribution de l’Union à la recherche de solutions multilatérales aux problèmes communs par son action via et avec les enceintes internationales, que ces dernières soient personnifiées (organisations internationales) ou non, qu’elles soient universelles ou régionales.

Enjeux de la théorisation et de la pratique

Ce colloque sur la traduction et l’intelligence artificielle vient pour éclairer un aspect qui n’est pas récent dans les études traductologiques, celui des nouvelles technologies assistant l’acte de traduire. Selon plusieurs sources, l’intelligence artificielle ne semble pas faciliter la traduction si bien qu’elle suscite actuellement de houleux débats, afin de déterminer le vrai apport de l’IA aussi bien sur le plan théorique que pratique. De ce fait, nous aspirons, à travers cette rencontre, discuter les aspects linguistiques et techniques de la traduction à la lumière de l’intelligence artificielle qui pourraient égaler, voire impacter, l’intelligence réelle.

Why Humanities?

The Decline and Fall of the Role of Human Sciences in the Euro-Atlantic World

The goal of this international conference is to analyze and describe the mechanisms at work in the last 120 years which led to a comprehensive and global decline of the role of the humanities, especially in Europe and the US. We are interested in papers questioning the capitalistic strategies of the main publishing houses, predatory attitudes to research results, issues of “academic colonialism,” such as peer-review practices excluding selected topics and scholars from non-Euro-Atlantic institutions (e.g. the Global South, Eastern Europe etc.), monolinguistic normalization, the loss of diversity in topics, and the ways in which politics and media are openly denigrating the agency of human sciences.

Aujourd’hui, alors que le tourisme mondial se remet de la crise de la COVID-19, nous souhaitons stimuler la réflexion sur la manière dont la pandémie a modifié les interactions existantes entre l’environnement et le tourisme et envisager leurs possibles évolutions futures. Ceci revêt une importance cruciale, compte tenu des enjeux globaux de la préservation de la biodiversité et de nos engagements internationaux, comme illustrés par les résolutions prises lors de la Conférence des Parties (COP15) sur la biodiversité tenue à Montréal en décembre 2022. Notre objectif est de rassembler de nouvelles études qui apportent un éclairage sur la vulnérabilité environnementale des destinations diverses face à la reprise des flux touristiques.

Corps et âme. Transmettre l’émotion en chanson

5e biennale internationale d’études sur la chanson

Malgré le caractère artificiel et esthétisé de la voix qui chante, se met à chanter, décide de se mettre à chanter pour dire ses affects et tâcher d’émouvoir le public, la chanson donne l’impression de rapporter et d’apporter un moment de vie intense. D’une part parce qu’il ne servirait à rien de produire une prouesse vocale pour dire sans rime ni raison un sentiment banal et plat ; d’autre part parce que l’enserrement musical d’un discours isole une bulle de temps compté qui fonctionne comme une parenthèse hors du temps, hors de la vie courante. Pourtant, magiquement, la vie se manifeste, au cœur du texte qui dit lui-même des émotions fictionnelles ou fictives et au cœur d’une voix qui transporte avec elle la corporéité dont elle émane et transforme la chanson, aussi intimiste qu’elle soit elle-même et aussi nombreux que soit le public pour l’écouter, en corps à corps. L’émotion en chanson résulte donc de l’émulsion entre quatre ingrédients : le texte, la voix, la musique, la scène.

Processus de création musicale et aspiration à la paix

Semaine internationale de la création musicale 2024 (SICM2024)

La modernité musicale du vingtième siècle s’est fondée sur la notion, très offensive, d’avant-garde. Beaucoup d’acteurs de ces mouvements se voyaient d’ailleurs en combattants, et certains le furent véritablement, comme les futuristes ou Iannis Xenakis. D’immenses tensions se sont immiscées dans les relations des artistes entre eux et avec les institutions, mais aussi dans le rapport des créateurs avec le public, et peut-être même au sein de l’écriture musicale, marquée par de nombreuses intransigeances. Ces tensions sont encore bien présentes. Pourtant, sans rien lâcher des enjeux esthétiques d’une musique vivante, les nouvelles générations de compositeurs n’aspirent-elles pas à un autre modèle, et à une forme d’apaisement propre à reconfigurer la composition musicale, dans son modèle social comme dans son régime de production ? La SICM24 souhaite interroger les liens entre la Paix, pensée comme élaboration sans cesse à construire, et les processus de création musicale.

Set within an interdisciplinary perspective, this conference raises questions around otherness and its representations in contemporary thought between the Orient and the Occident. Studies devoted to the question of otherness and its corollaries – alienation, discrimination, inclusion and exclusion – are considerably important and their potential has nourished scientific reflexion and drawn extensive attention on the part of authors, sociologists, journalists, political scientists and ethnologists. Such representations of the image of the Other are shaped by imaginaries that feed partly upon the perceptions of the historical past, that of colonialism and imperialism, and partly from newly-born representations with the advent of this third millennium.

Expériences, gestion et adaptations (XVIIIe-XXIe siècles)

This conference examines the history of naval war losses from eighteenth through the twenty first centuries, forming the second conference of the Naval War Losses group with the parnership of French Navy Center for Strategic Studies. "Loss" here is broadly defined, but focuses primarly on the loss of human lives, forming its own unit of analysis to understand experiences and administration of, as well as adaptation in, naval warfare. This conference encourages analysis of losses in all forms of naval combat, wether at sea, underwater or above water via naval aviation, in cyberspace or beyond, as well as in amphibious campaign. It also encourages consideration of the role of medecine in preventing or mediating naval losses, alongside consideration of broader socio-technologies that shape the rates., recording, and reporting of naval losses.

This panel aims to address the question of the representation of disability in world cinema (fiction and documentary), while moving away from a purely historical approach that would primarily focus on the evolution of representation of disability to consider how Disability Studies have enabled us to reconsider the cinematic representations of disability. This panel hinges on the assumption that Disability Studies have given rise to a series of critical and theoretical tools, as well as to a renewed perception of disability that no longer sees it as a hindrance, but rather as a driving force for creation.
