  Lives of the Dead in Asia

  The dead inhabit the world in their own particular ways. In Asia, where life presupposes that physical substance, spirits and the flow of vital energy are united and held together, the moment of death is one of disjunction, even of dispersion. Faced with this phenomenon, numerous techniques as well as objects of various kinds allow the living to cultivate a relationship with the dead. Both anthropologists and historians have described and emphasised how vividly the dead are present among the living. This topic has seen new developments since the beginning of the century. Faced with the profusion of objects and techniques that allow the dead to evolve in the world of the living, this issue of “Lives of the Dead in Asia” intends to reflect on the ways the different vehicles of existence of the dead are produced and used.

  Engraving dance, music, science and geography

  Crafts, trades and the dissemination of knowledge in the 18th century

  The expression “danse gravée” has long designated 18^th-century dance notation practices, since the diffusion of the Feuillet notation from 1700 onwards. The repertoire of engraved contredanses, published and distributed in the form of collections of small notebooks or booklets, notably from the 1760s and the Répertoire des bals de La Cuisse, is relatively well known. The place of women engravers, editors and booksellers will be widely discussed during these days. The aim is to understand how 18th century choreographic practices fit into a network of printmaking know-how, from technical engraving to semi-fine printmaking.

  Naturalism in Painting 1870–1905

  Conference of the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

  Perceived as the dominant artistic trend of the last third of the 19^th century, yet, still difficult to delineate, Naturalism raises a number of conceptual issues. Naturalism, perhaps the most significant trend in European painting in the 1880s and 1890s, was present simultaneously in other European countries only a few years after its emergence in France, and appeared in equal quality from Scotland to Russia and Spain to Hungary. In order to better understand the current of Naturalism, the research group “Realism and Naturalism in Hungary and in Europe” based at the Hungarian National Gallery is organizing a 2-day international conference.

Ce premier colloque sera consacré aux actes épiscopaux eux-mêmes, à leurs caractéristiques, à leur composition, à leurs rédacteurs et à leurs conditions de rédaction.

  Hungary, Folklore and Modernity

  The conference aims to study the hungarian folk movement called “táncházmozgalom” (“dance house movement”). In 2022, this movement celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the first “táncház” (“dance house”, type of traditional dance ball), held in Budapest on the 6th of May 1972. The process of “learning by doing” is a central dynamic to the personal investment of the youngsters in this movement, during the music and dance lessons as well as during the táncházak (dance houses), koncertek (concerts) and táborok (camps). The dance house movement is also very much marked by hungarian ethnography of the XX^th century. The practices of dancing and music are anchored in the consulting of numerous works and archives of ethnographic collections from the last century. As such, the “táncházmozgalom” is often called “revival movement” since it brings melodies and steps of rural folk music back up to date in the modern and urban context of Budapest.

Il entend également proposer, dans une visée plus prospective, des actions pour contrebalancer les effets néfastes de ces difficultés. Les organisatrices et les organisateurs du colloque envisagent un large éventail de paradigmes théoriques et disciplinaires (sociolinguistique, sciences politiques, droit, sciences de l’éducation…) ainsi que d’approches méthodologiques et théoriques.

  Changements environnementaux et espaces urbains littoraux méditerranéens : qualité de ville, qualité de vie

  La qualité de l’environnement dans les espaces littoraux méditerranéens se présente aujourd’hui, comme une préoccupation urbaine, socio économique et politique ayant des enjeux liés à la qualité de vie et au développement local. La fragilité de ces espaces côtiers et les multiples pressions qu’ils subissent constituent autant de préoccupations environnementales communes qui ne cessent de tarauder les esprits des chercheurs et des décideurs. Compte tenu de la complexité de la situation, plusieurs nouveaux enjeux liés au changement climatique sont à prendre également en compte et notamment ceux liés aux changements environnementaux et générés par la concentration urbaine, le tourisme de masse, les rejets industriels et toxiques, les risques d’érosion, les pollutions induites par les activités des populations, etc. D'autre part, les évolutions urbaines et technologiques ne sont pas certes sans effets sur la réduction et/ou l’aggravation des risques environnementaux dans les villes méditerranéennes.

  Forces and Order. Police, security and surveillance in North Africa

  "L'Année du Maghreb" 30|2023-II

  The police forces of the Arab regimes have been the mainstay of the dictatorships in place before and after the 2011 uprisings.The main functions of the latter were and still are to break down democratic opposition. They hold a very specific place in the region’s collective imagination. This imaginary is affected by the power of State repression, which tends to overshadow the plurality of law enforcement mechanisms. As a result, security has mainly been apprehended from the angle of political repression and from outside the security institution, by focusing on the repression’s clientele groups rather than its actors, that is the police. This special issue aims to highlight sociological, anthropological and historical analyses of the various security systems: from the police institution to the more opaque surveillance mechanisms fostered by various institutionalised security professions (informers, militias, neighbourhood agents, etc.).

  From the disconnected letters to the science of letters: a meeting of knowledges in the Middle East

  In order to interpret the disconnected letters of the Qur’an (ḥurūf muqaṭṭa‘a), Muslim thinkers have based their work on esoteric concepts, sometimes handed down from Antiquity, which have flourished in Islamic lands under the name of the science of letters (‘ilm al-ḥurūf). This international symposium aims to study the various representations of the mysterious letters within the wider framework of the science of letters, and to put them in perspective against similar readings from languages and cultures close to Arabic. Part of the symposium will be held in the historic citadel of Erbil in the heart of ancient Mesopotamia, “the land of the two rivers”, the cradle of early writing.

  Photography of Persecution. Pictures of the Holocaust

  Rather than treating photographic images taken under Nazi rule as self-explanatory, immediate, and self-contained, this conference invites interested scholars to approach photographs as they would other documents – by treating photographs as objects of historical inquiry and interrogating the political interests authorizing their creation, the material conditions under which they were produced, the editing process out of which they emerged and were displayed, and the uses to which they were put. The conference will focus on the photographic record of the persecution of Jews in Nazi-dominated Europe, including its overseas possessions from 1933 to 1945.

  La princesse hors les murs : la réception internationale de l’œuvre de Mme de Lafayette aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles

  Alors que la réception de l’œuvre de Mme de Lafayette a fait l’objet de plusieurs travaux importants, la diffusion internationale de son œuvre et l’extension de son influence restent encore largement à explorer. Par exemple, les traductions de La Princesse de Clèves publiées à Londres et à Amsterdam en 1679 et à Venise en 1691, de même qu’une version dramatique représentée à Londres en 1681, témoignent de l’intérêt que l’œuvre a rapidement rencontré hors de France. En se limitant dans un premier temps à l’impact immédiat suscité par la publication des œuvres de Mme de Lafayette, notre colloque entend montrer l’étendue et la diversité de sa réception en Europe. Dans un second temps, un autre colloque prendra en charge la dimension internationale de sa réception moderne, du XIX^e siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui.
