Call for papers - Epistemology and methodology
Field practices and epistemological issues, Palestine and Jordan
The workshop aims to combine reflections on the ongoing development of Palestinian studies with the recent revival of work on Jordan, in order to examine Jordan's role as a privileged observation point for Palestine, a question that has been relatively unexplored until now. Through three main axes — archives and primary sources preserved in Jordan that enable the study of Palestine, the cross-border circulation of people and knowledge, and intersecting cultural scenes through the notions of identity and authenticity, this workshop aims to lay the groundwork for a transnational and multidisciplinary reflection on Jordan's place in the production of knowledge on Palestine.

Depuis quelques années, différents projets d’HTR (handwritten character recognition) de manuscrits en graphies non latines, conservés dans des bibliothèques françaises, ont été menés à bien. La journée d’étude se propose de faire un point sur ces avancées et ces défis avec les porteurs actuels de projets de reconnaissance automatique d’écriture en langues peu dotées.

The Levant and the Mediterranean

At the crossroads of the Near East and the eastern Mediterranean, the Levant has always been a multicultural area, a zone of contact between Asia, Africa and Europe. Since the 19th century, archaeological digs have been revealing the archaeology and history of this region. This issue of Technè reflects the changes and challenges facing archaeology in this region, and highlights the contribution of a multidisciplinary approach to the knowledge and preservation of the Levant's heritage, from the Neolithic period to the end of the Middle Ages.

Research Grants to Study the Documentary Collections of the Custody of the Holy Land in Jerusalem
The Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF, National Library of France) in partnership with the Centre de recherche français de Jérusalem (CRFJ, French Research Centre in Jerusalem), has launched a call for applications for individual research grants aimed to support the identification, description and/or study of collections held by the Custody of the Holy Land. These collections, which are being digitised will the assistance of the BnF, will be made available on Gallica as part of the Bibliothèques d’Orient (Libraries of the Middle East) project. The grant holders can be doctoral students, post-doctoral scholars or master’s level students in any discipline of the human and social sciences, regardless of nationality or main institutional affiliation.

À la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle, les bibliothèques occidentales ont enrichi leurs collections avec des manuscrits issus des communautés juives du Caire, sous le nom de Manuscrits de la Genizah du Caire. La quatorzième journée d’étude en paléographie et diplomatique hébraïques s’adresse à tous les chercheurs travaillant sur les collections de la Genizah du Caire conservées dans les institutions françaises.

Second young researchers' conference in historical linguistics in Lyon
L’association lyonnaise Diachronies contemporaines, vouée à la promotion de l’activité scientifique des jeunes chercheurs en linguistique historique, organise les Deuxièmes rencontres lyonnaises des jeunes chercheurs en linguistique historique. Après une première édition dédiée spécifiquement aux langues gallo-romanes, cette seconde édition entend s’ouvrir également à l’étude des langues anciennes indo-européennes. L’objectif de l’événement est de permettre aux jeunes chercheur·ses travaillant sur l’histoire des langues anciennes et gallo-romanes de présenter leurs travaux et d’échanger à ce sujet. La forme de ces rencontres est celle d’un colloque traditionnel à la suite duquel des actes seront édités.

Two postdoc research grants
Suite à la nomination à un poste définitif d’un de nos chercheurs, nous avons le plaisir d’offrir deux bourses de recherches postdoctorales pour une durée de 12 mois et de 9 mois respectivement pour le projet « Avicenna East & West I : Commentaries on the Qaṣīdat al-nafs ». Le objectifs du projet sont : (1) Comprendre la diffusion de la pensée avicennienne au sens large dans l’Orient musulman à travers l’analyse des commentaires du Poème de l’âme. (2) Procéder à une analyse transversale des commentaires pour déterminer sur quelles questions précises, en quels termes, en utilisant quels types d’arguments, quelles références, quel type de discours, les commentateurs s’affrontent au texte et entre eux.

Elle s’inscrit dans le cadre des activités de l’axe transversal du laboratoire « Histoire et sources des mondes antiques » (HiSoMA – Éditions, archives, humanités numériques) et du premier axe stratégique de la Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée (Les données de la recherche, de l’acquisition à l’archivage).

Epigraphy and history of Ancient and Medieval Jordan
Par leur abondance, leur diversité et leur fragilité, les inscriptions antiques et médiévales de la Jordanie constituent un patrimoine aussi précieux que menacé. Sans elles, des pans entiers de l’histoire du pays resteraient méconnus. Trop souvent, elles sont pourtant étudiées de façon cloisonnée, en fonction des intérêts historiques et des compétences linguistiques des chercheurs. Le colloque de Lyon fournira l’occasion de faire dialoguer les historiens de l’Antiquité et du Moyen Âge, ainsi que des épigraphistes hellénisants et latinisants avec des spécialistes des langues sémitiques transcrites sur la pierre entre la conquête du Proche-Orient par Alexandre le Grand et les premiers siècles de l’islam.

Data encoding entails an analog-to-digital conversion in which the characteristics of an object, text, or archaeological site can be represented in a specialized format for computer handling. Once encoded, data can be stored, sorted, and analyzed through a variety of computer-based techniques ranging from specialized data-mining algorithms to user-friendly mobile apps. Especially when encoded data is open-source, researchers around the world can collaborate on the collection, encoding, and analysis of data.

New archives and perspectives on urban citizenship and global entanglements
The Open Jerusalem project aims to unlock and connect different archives and sources in order to investigate the ordinary entangled history of a global city through the lens of the concept of urban citizenship (citadinité). The objective is to produce historical narratives focusing on the way residents interacted with each other, inhabited and appropriated space(s). The symposium intends to be a forum for deepening discussions and opening scientific debates, based on contributions by scholars specializing in related topics, urban historians and specialists of the region. Therefore all participants are kindly requested to stay in Rethymno for the whole duration of the symposium.

Après les deux réunions à Paris (décembre 2012, juin 2013) et une première journée de présentation des membres de l’ANR à Pise (mars 2013), la table ronde de décembre 2013 sera l’occasion, après un an de travaux, de réunir les membres de l’ANR pour deux journées de travail au cœur des archives salviati à la Scuola Normale Superiore, lieu de dépôt par la famille de leurs archives. Elle sera consacrée aux résultats des travaux individuels et collectifs entamés ainsi qu’aux perspectives de recherche, elle fera alterner des présentations individuelles et des ateliers de travail avec la présence d’experts extérieurs. La table ronde permettra de réfléchir aux suites et à la forme à donner aux enquêtes.

Ce colloque porte donc sur l’évolution des styles de chancellerie dans le monde arabo-musulman médiéval, sur leur diversité régionale et sur l’histoire de cette langue d’autorité, supposée obéir à des règles fixées définitivement par le prophète ou par les premiers secrétaires de l’empire de l’islam. Quelles sont les modalités techniques de l’innovation ? Sur quels plans, sémantique, lexical, syntaxique et / ou graphique, se manifeste-t-elle ? Ce sont donc moins les normes, les codes, les règles qui intéresseront ici, que les styles d’écriture, les variantes orthographiques, les graphies atypiques, la rature, la transgression des normes, la revitalisation sémantique, le néologisme et la variété des modes de citation coranique ou de référence au ḥadīṯ. Il s’agit de renouveler l’étude d’un corpus, considéré non comme un texte figé et sclérosé, technique et rébarbatif, mais comme un ensemble vivant, évolutif et diversifié.

The study of legal documents: new approaches to papyrology and Arab diplomacy
S’efforçant d’interroger autrement le matériau papyrologique et diplomatique, ce colloque se propose d’éclairer le rapport entre matérialité des sources et conception de l’histoire. D’une part, il explore le fonctionnement du système judiciaire musulman, et à travers lui, le statut juridique des minorités religieuses, de l’autre, il réexamine le rapport du monde musulman médiéval à l’Autre, aux pays limitrophes de la dār al-ḥarb. Aussi la réflexion des interventions qui ponctuent ce colloque porte-t-elle sur les documents légaux et écrits officiels à la faveur d’approches croisées rendues possibles grâce aux divers domaines de recherche qui y sont explorés, histoire, religion, droit normatif et archéologie. Qu’ils soient d’Orient (Égypte, Syrie) ou d’Occident musulman (Maghreb, al-Andalus), les témoignages dont sont porteurs ces écrits légaux et officiels, objets d’une analyse pluridisciplinaire, contribuent à renouveler notre vision de la fonction et de l’autorité des acteurs judiciaires comme de celles des détenteurs du pouvoir politique au Moyen Âge.

Arabic Chancellery Documents through the Prism of Historicity
Writing, Vocabulary, Syntax, and Intertextuality from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Kātib (d. 750) to al-Qalqashandī (d. 1418)
This conference will address the evolution of chancellery styles, their regional diversity, and the history of the rhymed prose (sajʿ), this language of authority that was supposed to obey rules definitively fixed by the Prophet or the first secretaries of the Islamic Empire. What were the technical modalities for innovation? On what semantic, lexical, syntactical, and/or graphic levels did it manifest? Rather than on norms, codes, and rules, studies will focus on writing styles, orthographic variants, atypical handwriting, deletion, the transgression of norms, semantic revitalization, neologisms, and the variety of styles for citing the Quran or referencing ḥadīth. We are seeking to renew study of a corpus considered not as a fixed and ossified text, technical and off-putting, but as a living, evolving, and diverse ensemble.
