Du 12 au 16 mai 2025, l’Institut supérieur de philosophie (ISP) accueillera Nicholas Boylston au sein du Centre De Wulf-Mansion. Durant son séjour, Nicholas Boylston donnera une conférence sur ʿAṭṭār, intitulée A Wondrous Pain: Meaning, Metaphor and the Poetic Integration of the Self in Farīd al-Dīn ʿAṭṭār et animera deux séminaires sur textes arabes, autour du concept de maʿnā et des traités lexicographiques du taṣawwuf.

Présences artistiques iraniennes : Création et résistance
Revue interartistique « Couturière » - n° 1
Ce numéro vise à offrir une analyse pluridisciplinaire des arts iraniens contemporains en adoptant une approche pluri-artistique (théâtre, cinéma, arts visuels, musique…). Nous nous attacherons à examiner les compromis que les artistes vivant en Iran doivent trouver pour témoigner et dénoncer la vérité politique sans être censurés, ainsi que les difficultés rencontrées en exil : le sentiment de déracinement, la recherche de leur place dans un nouveau contexte, et leur engagement à représenter les injustices étatiques en Iran. Comme le souligne Shirin Neshat, artiste en exil pour son travail artistique « l’art iranien est un art politique si ce n’est pas politique ce n’est pas un art iranien. »

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Les littératures des mondes de l’Islam à l’épreuve des contestations
Représenter, d’Europe en Orient, le refus de la norme
Ces deux journées se donnent pour objectif d’étudier les mises en forme littéraires des contestations, qu’elles soient de nature politique, sociale, culturelle, religieuse ou linguistique, en rapport avec les mondes de l’Islam (pays de langues arabe, turque et persane). Ouvertes à des chercheurs d’horizons variés pour ouvrir un dialogue interdisciplinaire et comparatiste, les journées auront pour vocation d’interroger les spécificités de l’opposition aux normes dans les littératures d’un espace traversé par des dynamiques proches. Nous réfléchirons également aux textes européens qui élaborent un discours critique sur le monde qualifié d’oriental (contestation des normes orientales, contestation des postulats européens sur l’Orient…).

Serving the Sultan: Religious Diversity in Gujarat Under Islamic Rule
The Serving the Sultan conference will re-visit and cross-examine the processes that forged and shaped this religiously multi-layered, and ethnically plural society during the Islamic period in Gujarat (1298 - 1756 AD). This will be achieved by focusing on religious minorities, either in the numerical sense (Jains/Parsis), or minorities in the sense of not sharing the religion of power (various Hindu traditions). These communities’ intellectual, artistic, and literary contributions at the Islamic courts, their relation with the Islamic rulers, their everyday lives, and their mutual interactions will emerge as the common thread throughout this conference. Moreover, this colloquium seeks to explore how these local actors are embedded in trans-regional socio-political and cultural processes, thus connecting the developments in Gujarat with the broader South-Asian context.

From the disconnected letters to the science of letters: a meeting of knowledges in the Middle East
In order to interpret the disconnected letters of the Qur’an (ḥurūf muqaṭṭa‘a), Muslim thinkers have based their work on esoteric concepts, sometimes handed down from Antiquity, which have flourished in Islamic lands under the name of the science of letters (‘ilm al-ḥurūf). This international symposium aims to study the various representations of the mysterious letters within the wider framework of the science of letters, and to put them in perspective against similar readings from languages and cultures close to Arabic. Part of the symposium will be held in the historic citadel of Erbil in the heart of ancient Mesopotamia, “the land of the two rivers”, the cradle of early writing.

On Animal Piety in Islam
In this symposium, we aim to consider the religious figure of the animal in Islam, neither as an object of worship (an idol) nor a means of worshipping (sacrificial offering), but rather as a fully-fledged subject, a worshipper of God and a model for all worshippers. What are the origin and theological posterity of verses like, “Do you not see that God is glorified by all those in the heavens and the earth, even birds in rows?” (24:41) What does believing in animal worship of God imply for the definition of religion itself?

Current Perspectives on Ibn ʿArabī and “Akbarī” Thought
The aim of this meeting is to bring together confirmed and emerging specialists in order to gain some perspective on the current academic research on Ibn ʿArabī and “Akbarī” thought and to discuss research directions for the future. It will also bring to light questions arising from the reading and use of Ibn ʿArabī’s ideas today, taking into account the new approaches and better access to the texts provided by recent tools for textual analysis, and evaluating how our present-day situation shapes our understanding of his works, and conversely, what an informed reading can bring to current re-appropriations and (mis)use.

Abbas Kiarostami, the words and the images
« Abbas Kiarostami, les mots et les images » est un colloque international qui sera organisé les 2 et 3 mai 2019 à la faculté polydisciplinaire de Safi, Maroc. Il entre dans le cadre de la XIVe édition des journées cinématographiques de Safi. Complexe et déroutant, le cinéma kiarostamien a souvent été décrit par des adjectifs quasi contradictoires : poétique, néo-réaliste, intellectuel, mental, humaniste, cérébral… « Il est vraiment un continent à lui tout seul, autonome et immense », c’est en ces termes qu’Alain Bergala résume ainsi ce que l’histoire du cinéma retient d’Abbas Kiarostami. Jean-Luc Godard dit carrément de lui que « le cinéma commence avec D.W. Griffith et prend fin avec Abbas Kiarostami. »

Myths of origin in Asian societies
Un proverbe indien dit qu’il ne faut pas chercher l’origine d’un fleuve, ni l’origine d’un saint. L’observation directe conduit à peu de chose. Mais l’esprit va au-delà. Il crée un mythe. Qui n’a pas rêvé de son origine, de l’origine d’une nation, d’une langue, d’un thème littéraire ou artistique, de l’origine de l’homme, de l’origine du monde, de l’origine des dieux ? Le mythe n’est cependant pas le rêve incontrôlé. Il est un imaginaire qui transpose la nature profonde d’une âme humaine, d’une société, d’une religion, d’une civilisation. Un mythe d’origine définit un commencement, pose une limite initiale. Or la raison ne peut concevoir une origine absolue. Un mythe d’origine pose un jalon, un repère dans un continuum de temps ou d’espace. Chaque civilisation d’Asie dit par un mythe d’origine quel repère elle a choisi pour le début de son histoire. Et ceci est révélateur des caractères dans lesquels elle s'affirme.

Philosophical Hermeneutics in the Islamicate Context
This conference would like to engage with one specific context among all those which were and still are, as it were, “affected” by philosophical hermeneutics: the Islamicate context. The latter seems particularly relevant: on the one hand because it is intimately intertwined with the Western context; on the other hand because the Islamicate context retains a clear reference to religion that makes its entanglement with philosophical hermeneutics a burning challenge for all parties involved. The universality of the hermeneutic order should be put to the test of the Islamicate context within three different angles: the exegetical aspect, in order to see in what extend philosophical hermeneutics can contribute to rethink the understanding of the Koran in the contemporary context; the interpretative aspect, to address different contemporary attempts to reinterpret the classical – philosophical, spiritual or legal – heritage; the critical aspect, to present different political and critical issues raised by the question of the encounter between philosophical hermeneutics and Islamic thought.

Poètes, philosophes, historiens, musiciens, les explorations intellectuelles et sensibles de ces grands penseurs recouvrent tous les champs du savoir, de la musicologie et de la mystique, aux mathématiques, de l’astronomie à la médecine. Ces quatre grands penseurs des IXe, XIIe et XIVe siècle, furent également de grands voyageurs, curieux du monde et de leur époque. Ils vécurent dans les cités qui firent le rayonnement de l'empire islamique, de Séville à Damas, du Caire à Bagdad. La réception de leur œuvre dépasse largement les frontières de leurs régions d’élection, comme de leur époque.

Sera au cœur du travail l'étude des usages des termes « moderne », « contemporain », « actuel » et « avant-garde » au sein des discours de l'art de la région.

The universality of the hermeneutic order should be put to the test of the Islamicate context within three different angles: the interpretative dimension, to address contemporary thinkers from the Islamicate world who have engaged with philosophical hermeneutics; the comparative dimension, in order to deal with possible transactions on the basis of common traits and divergences; and the creative dimension, to present attempts at using philosophical hermeneutics in order to develop new interpretations of canonical or traditional ensembles of texts.

Art and History Museums in the Middle East as places of social and political production
This panel aims at studying how works of art are defined in Middle Eastern museums and how this definition encompasses their political project. We would like to study how museums are perceived, socially and politically, including on a commercial level, by local and international audiences.
