The Health of One-Parent Families in the UK from Black Report (1980) to 2010 Marmot Review

The life expectancy of the English population has increased but health inequalities have increased at the same time (Marmot Review, 2010). Lone mothers with dependent children suffering from depression have been the subject of publications (Bebbington et al., 2003; Atkins, 2010). Yet, other determinants of health in connection with lifestyle such as smoking, alcohol and drug consumption, tiredness, sleeping disorder, obesity, nutrition, diet, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, cancer, mortality, the lack of leisure and outdoor activities have seldom been mentioned, are not well-documented or passed over in silence. Still, the health of lone mothers with dependent children, whether they have experienced a divorce or a separation or are widows is frailer than the health of women who are married or living as a couple (Beatson-Hird et al., 1989). In 2011 in the UK, there were two million (1.96m) one-parent families. The country has 18 million families (17.9m) with dependent children (ONS, 2012). Almost 92% of single-parent families are headed by mothers and the rates have marginally changed since 2001. The conference will aim at uncovering these phenomena and exploring them in the light of quantitative and qualitative studies for instance.

In the wake of the London Olympics, which opened with a popular and populist ceremony depicting the Britain of yesteryear while celebrating the vibrancy of a modern multicultural society, it is timely to consider this deployment of soft power against the backdrop of contemporary Britain. More specifically, the aim of the conference is to explore and draw together common threads and themes – individual expression and freedom, an inherent consciousness of the past and a continuing national identity and iconoclasm – and to consider their influence in the context of broader political and social developments, including Britain’s faltering relationship with the EU, the response to the financial crisis and to Scottish devolution.

Reading English-language Arts and Literature with the Later Lacan
Lacanian analysis of literature and the arts has not been in vogue in France for some time now. Following the publication of Écrits in 1966, there was a period of analytic fascination with the imaginary capture of the mirror phase and its intersection with the structures of the symbolic in both literary and film studies. Since the 1980s, academic engagement with Lacanian theory in the cultural field has been in a slump, and this for several reasons: the reputed difficulty of Lacan’s style as apprehended through Ecrits, the opposition of numerous feminist critics, and the general decline of theory in the field of literary studies. Today, in light of the growing force of scientistic conceptions of the human subject (at the level of intelligence, behaviour, reproduction, the limits of the body, mortality), Lacanian theory finds renewed relevance in its unwavering postulate of the subject as singular, unique and incalculable, insusceptible to scientific conclusiveness.

Manufacturers and merchants : making and exporting clocks and other luxury goods in the 18th century
Roger Smith is an independent historian who was educated at the University of London. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2006. He is chiefly interested in the organisation of the manufacture and sale of clocks, watches and related luxury articles in the eighteenth century, including international aspects like the migration of craftsmen. He has done much research into the Anglo-Swiss watchmaking firm of Vulliamy of London, and is currently working on a major study of James Cox and his competitors in the trade in clocks and watches from Western Europe to Asia. As well as publishing extensively on such topics, he has acted as historical adviser to museums and auction houses, including the loan exhibition SingSong, Treasures from the Forbidden City at the Museum Speelklok, Utrecht in 2010-11.

The middle classes in the contemporary city
Depuis les deux dernières décennies, les classes moyennes font l’objet de nombreux débats scientifiques autour de leur définition, de leurs modes de vie, de leur positionnement politique et de leurs transformations, avec par exemple le débat sur le déclassement ou celui sur la contribution des classes moyennes à la solidarité collective. En termes plus académiques, l’analyse de ces groupes intermédiaires permet d’interroger les reconfigurations sociales et les évolutions des frontières entre groupes sociaux en cours dans les sociétés contemporaines. Ce colloque propose de prolonger ces débats en se centrant plus spécifiquement sur l’analyse des rapports au territoire des classes moyennes et de leur place dans la ville contemporaine.

Alternative Approaches to Urban Regeneration
Les organisateurs de cette journée d’étude s'intéressent aux initiatives visant à introduire des projets innovants dans les villes, en particulier les villes ayant subi des transformations radicales ces vingt dernières années. Nous nous intéressons à des situations où les approches traditionnelles sont influencées par des stratégies nouvelles initiées par des groupes de pression composés d’architectes/designers, de groupes d’habitants ou des gouvernements locaux (municipalités ou autre). Cette journée d’étude souhaite explorer la question du recours à l’expertise des habitants ou des spécialistes du terrain dans le domaine de la rénovation urbaine : cette expertise est-elle intégrée dans des projets ? Comment ? Peut-elle servir à répondre au phénomène accru de fragmentation urbaine ?

Les relations anglo-américaines sont abordées le plus souvent dans le cadre de l’histoire des relations internationales et de la diplomatie. Nous proposons de les étudier plutôt à travers l’histoire de projets internationaux, qu’ils relèvent du commerce et des affaires ou qu’ils poursuivent des objectifs politiques ou réformateurs au sens large. Le but de la journée d’études est de préciser dans quelles circonstances britanniques et américains évoquent leur histoire et leurs traditions communes, ou à l’inverse mettent l’accent sur ce qui les différencie. D’une manière plus générale, il s’agit d’enrichir la réflexion sur les pratique et les cultures de « l’anglo-saxonisme » au XIXe siècle.

Nous examinerons comment ces éléments se situent par rapport à l'être humain, à son passé et son histoire, son existence présente et son devenir : ses dimensions humaines et posthumaines. L'environnement et la nature sont au cœur des préoccupations actuelles et des paradigmes scientifiques : les discours politiques, imprégnés d'écologie et de respect de l'habitat, ont souvent mis en avant un retour à la nature. L'histoire, la civilisation, la politique, l'art, la littérature et le cinéma écossais nous permettront d'explorer ces thèmes. -

This one day conference invites researchers working on initiatives aiming at introducing innovative urban regeneration projects in cities across Europe, particularly cities affected by radical re-modellings over the last twenty years. We are looking for instances of administrative traditions being challenged towards exploratory strategies by lobbying groups of architects/designers, or local communities, or even local governments. This conference wants to explore if and how the expertise of uses from inhabitants and field workers in urban regeneration processes may be integrated to learn about possible ways of challenging the emerging patterns of urban fragmentation. -

Autrefois société pré-industrielle dans laquelle la distinction entre culture d'élite dominante et culture populaire subalterne survécut plus longtemps que dans d'autres nations européennes, l'Irlande a néanmoins toujours été caractérisée par l'hybridité. La lutte politique pour l'indépendance s'accompagna de la sacralisation d'un certain genre de « culture populaire », entendue au sens de la culture du peuple d'origine, qui fut par la suite promue au statut de culture dominante. Aujourd'hui, la mondialisation de l'économie et de la culture irlandaises ont transformé cette dernière en une marque publicitaire connue internationalement, détournée et exploitée par les industries culturelles du néo-capitalisme libéral. On peut se demander ce qui rend la culture irlandaise si attirante aux yeux du monde entier : est-ce sa réputation de soit-disant authenticité ? Son enracinement supposé dans un contexte local ? Ou encore le romantisme attaché à un passé de souffrance et de lutte ?
