Who Cares ? Psychiatry in the English-speaking world

«Who Cares?» is a newly-formed group of scholars from the Université Paris Nanterre, working specifically on the history of psychiatry in the English-speaking world. We are keen to encourage discussions on this subject and strengthen its international dimension. Our aim is also to foster further discussions on links and comparisons between historical perspectives on psychiatry in the French and the English-speaking worlds. This international conference will welcome all historical approaches to psychiatry and more generally to the treatment of mental illness which reflect on the topic “People and places” from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century in English-speaking countries.

Appartenances et altérités

La citoyenneté aux époques moderne et contemporaine

Juridiquement, la citoyenneté se définit comme la jouissance des droits attachés à une nationalité. Dès son avènement sous la Révolution française, la citoyenneté découle donc de la nationalité, c’est-à-dire de l’appartenance à un corps politique donné, et de l’enracinement dans la limite des frontières d’un État-nation. Elle n’est pas absolue. Une tension intrinsèque la partage donc : d’un côté, elle est régie par la Constitution, surplombée de la Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen, qui définit les libertés fondamentales auxquelles elle donne accès ; de l’autre, le caractère intrinsèquement universel de ces droits est immédiatement limité par l’enfermement dans la nation. Pour cette journée, tout type de contribution est encouragé : qu’elle s’appuie sur les sources normatives, qu’elle analyse des pratiques judiciaires, qu’elle soit un récit prosopographique ou qu’elle mène des explorations quantitatives.

Enquête sur le génocide des Tutsi : entre archives et terrain

Organisée dans le cadre de la 30^e commémoration du génocide contre les Tutsi et de la présentation de l’exposition « Rwanda 1994. Traces du génocide des Tutsi », cette journée d’études vise à interroger les pratiques des spécialistes du terrain rwandais et à confronter leurs rapports à l’archive et au terrain. La matinée sera consacrée au rôle des médiateurs de recherche (interprètes, traducteurs, assistants de recherche) ainsi qu’aux pratiques de la nouvelle génération de chercheurs qui expérimente ses terrains depuis deux ou trois ans. L’après-midi sera plus particulièrement consacré à la situation des archives au Rwanda, aux dynamiques de dépôts d’archives en France et aux spécificités des archives judiciaires

Small Forms in Circulation

Infrastructures, Practices, Publics

Small textual and material forms seem particularly adept at circulating within and between different publics. This conference investigates how the movement of brief, compressed, and otherwise small forms ranging from early modern pamphlets to Instagram stories shape the development of diverse publics, as well as the interplay between them. We propose to explore the relationship between small forms and publics through three related strands of inquiry: how infrastructures affect the circulation of small forms, how practices including remediation enable their circulation, and how the circulation of small forms shapes the formation, operation, and dissolution of public life.

Visegrad Scholarship at the Blinken – Open Society Archive (OSA) on the language(s) of freedom(s)

The criticism about infringements of academic freedom, or about the radicalization of autocratic powers cannot do without an understanding of the loaded vocabularies of freedoms in the past and present, for both societies and their elites. A complex rethinking and recontextualization of the thinkers of liberties, including from the Cold War era, must also be undertaken, together with the truth-seeking adventures and projects from the past. Historians, researchers, political scientists, sociologists and socially engaged artists are invited to reflect on the past uses of the languages of (attaining) freedoms by taking cues from the Blinken Open Society Archive's collections. The applicants are encouraged to reflect on the connections as well as on the differences between current times and the past by following some recommended sub-topics listed below.

Decoding European History through Guns: Methodologies and Research Approaches

What are firearms? How did they impact on the history of European societies? What are the more promising research approaches for studying them? Firearms hold profound implications for European societies, influencing international relations, the diffusion of violence, and State sovereignty. This workshop will convene researchers examining themes such as the relationship between European States and guns, global efforts to regulate arms markets, the role of firearms in changing the societal perception of violence, and the semantic nuances defining these instruments. Through exploration of diverse research methodologies, the workshop aims to highlight the significance of firearms as both a subject of scholarly inquiry and a lens for examining critical aspects of contemporary history, shedding new light on the European past – one trigger pull at a time.

Pratiques, personnages et interprétations

Le colloque est consacré à l’étude du comportement qui consiste à adresser à autrui des propos jugés excessivement louangeurs par des observateurs extérieurs, qui l’attribuent à une arrière-pensée intéressée : il s’agira d’examiner comment ce type de rapport à l’autre (κολακεία ou adulatio, typique des κόλακες ou adulatores) s’est manifesté et a été perçu par les penseurs, philosophes, historiens, orateurs et poètes, en Grèce et à Rome. On s’interrogera sur les dimensions morales qui motivent le jugement globalement négatif des Anciens, sur son contexte d’appréciation et sur la relation entre flatteurs et flattés. L’étude de ce comportement offre ainsi, dans le champ de l’histoire des mentalités, une forme d’approche des sociétés anciennes, au croisement des recherches sur la morale, l’identité, la sociabilité et les formes de pouvoir.

Agir en temps de crise (2024)

Comment les conflits se terminent-ils ?

Nous savons comment les conflits commencent et se développent. L’agression et les représailles créent une spirale sans fin dans laquelle chaque partie souffre de plus en plus. Ceux qui mènent les guerres exploitent l’impulsion humaine du « nous contre eux », transformant le chagrin, la peur et la frustration en haine et exacerbant les conflits. Pourtant, les conflits peuvent avoir une fin. Comment se terminent-ils ? Et comment les sociétés survivent-elles à leurs conséquences? Quelle contribution les sciences sociales peuvent-elles apporter à l’examen des conditions de résolution des conflits ? Cette année, le cycle « Agir en temps de crise » a choisi de s’intéresser à cette question de la fin des conflits, et voudrait examiner ce que l’histoire nous a appris, des traités de paix aux initiatives de réconciliation.

Ce colloque interdisciplinaire, à la croisée de l’histoire, de la philosophie, de la sociologie et du droit, se propose de remettre la focale sur cette dimension politique et critique portée par des coopératives de production en choisissant comme porte d’entrée la question juridique. Ouvert aux contributions portant sur la France et sur l’international, il prend pour objet ce que nous appelons ici, pour des questions de praticité, des « coopératives de travailleuses et travailleurs ». Nous entendons par là les coopératives possédées et gérées (au moins en grande partie) par les travailleur·se·s eux-mêmes – qu’elles prennent la forme des associations ouvrières, des coopératives de production (Scop), des Sociétés coopératives d’intérêt collectif (Scic), des Coopératives d’activité et d’emploi (CAE), des Sociétés anonymes de participation ouvrière (SAPO) – et portant un projet économique et politique alternatif aux entreprises capitalistes.

Exchanges, Mobility and Collaborations

The World of Silk Between France and Italy, 16th-19th Century

This workshop aims to consider Franco-Italian relations concerning silk from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century by fostering dialogue between research that has hitherto been separated by historiographical tradition, particularly combining history and art history. This interdisciplinary approach is all the more essential as it seeks to scrutinize through the same set of inquiries the entire silk production chain (from mulberry cultivation to fabric consumption, including thread manufacturing and preparation, pattern creation, and weaving). By revealing the importance of interdependencies among the various stages of the production and consumption process and the different actors within this industry, this approach leads to new considerations of the connections between the social worlds and the territories that silk interlinked.

Local communities in Austria-Hungary and beyond

“Acta Poloniae Historica”

Changes in the management of the Habsburg Empire and new technologies, expanding the circulation of social communication, accelerated the modernisation processes taking place in Central Europe. It was an area inhabited by various ethnic, national, religious and linguistic communities; they had to rework their modus vivendi and to find their place in complex networks of relations, in the context of the liberalising legal framework of the 1860s in the Austrian part of the monarchy and the tightening grip of the state on the local non-Magyar initiatives in the Hungarian part. Deep and multi-faceted socio-cultural changes were leading to new cumulations of symbolic (and political) power; new groups, termed here as local communities (political, social, religious), were gaining visibility and sought recognition, according to changing configuration of values and integration impulses. We pose the question how the new or redefined communities were formed and managed.

Les violences ordinaires dans la Rome républicaine : thèmes, degrés, définitions

Le présent appel s’adresse aux doctorantes et doctorants en fin de thèse, ainsi qu’aux postdoctorantes et post-doctorants ayant soutenu depuis moins de cinq ans. Il concerne un colloque scientifique qui constitue la cinquième édition de rencontres de spécialistes de la République romaine. La thématique des rencontres 2024 s’inscrit dans la continuité d’une première manifestation qui s’est déroulée en septembre 2023 et était consacrée aux violences quotidiennes dans la société romaine. Ce colloque voudrait s’intéresser à la détermination des seuils qui font basculer un acte, une parole du côté de la violence parce qu’ils rompent une norme. On pourrait résumer encore la question d’une manière différente : qu’est-ce qui fait la violence quotidienne ?

Captation, circulation et effets des images de guerres, de conflits et d’émeutes

Les XIX^e et XX^e siècles sont marqués par un premier mouvement de démultiplication des représentations de guerres, de conflits ou d’émeutes. Depuis, l’espace médiatique s’est vu saturé d’images, l’obligeant à se reconfigurer par étapes. Ce colloque porte sur les conditions de production, de mise en circulation et de réception de ces images. Il s’intéresse à la concurrence et/ou à la complémentarité entre les images qui émanent des autorités politiques, sécuritaires et militaires, les images médiatiques et les images captées et diffusées par les acteurs sociaux. Les contextes de guerres, de conflits ou d’émeutes sont porteurs de logiques de propagande et de jeux d’influence. Dans ces contextes particuliers, les images peuvent aider à comprendre et informer, mais leur exploitation, comme leur insertion dans des récits n’est jamais neutre.
