Cette journée d’étude se veut une réflexion sur les possibilités que l’optimisme pourrait offrir à l’être humain qui exprime dans toutes les nuances ses états de fragilité, d’impuissance face aux aléas de la vie, de doute, de pessimisme, ou encore de « dégoût de soi-même » (Flaubert, L’Éducation sentimentale, t. 2, 1869, p. 18). Il s’agit donc d’une approche pluridisciplinaire visant à mettre l’accent sur les jeux et les enjeux de tous ces duels existentiels qui ont marqué l’histoire de l’humanité et la manière dont elle a évoluée.

Violence and Empire. From the Early 1800s to the End of the Great War

From the early 1800s, the formation, consolidation, and maintenance of empires were increasingly bound to new logics of state power, technological advancements, and legal rationalisation and justification. Despite narratives of civilising missions and administrative modernisation, violence remained a central practice of imperial rule, both as an instrument of conquest and a mechanism for governing already established colonial regimes. This conference invites historians and scholars of related disciplines to consider the various ways in which violence operated within imperial systems, how it was implemented, codified and justified legally and culturally, along with its contemporary perception in the imperial metropolis and its remembrance and subsequent legacies that continuously remain influential until the present day.

Terrains criminologiques africains

The African continent remains "marginal" on the international stage of criminological research. Despite the development of academic programs, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Côte d’Ivoire, and the existence of specialized journals, African publications enjoy limited visibility. This lack of visibility can be explained by the standardization of international research, the weakness of research funding, linguistic boundaries, and the scarcity of exchanges between paradigmatic traditions. While anglophone research mostly adopts an etiological or institutional approach (prisons, violence, corruption), francophone work, influenced by interactionism, explores more diversified topics: green criminology, economic criminology, extreme violence, land conflicts, problematic practices of public agents... Numerous studies, although not identified as “criminological,” also contribute to the discipline due to the relevance of their theoretical frameworks. This issue therefore aims to make these African research contexts visible, to go beyond disciplinary boundaries, and to contribute to the conceptual and methodological renewal of a criminology in the making.

Graphic and audio-visual representations of extreme violence intended for a young audience

Since the 1980s, graphic productions (comics, graphic novels, albums) or audiovisual productions (animated films, documentary fiction, documentaries for children or adolescents, etc.) have experienced a certain renewed interest, thanks, among other things, to the combination of narrative and graphics, which allows readers to move from one level of reading to another, thus feeding two distinct but complementary levels of reading. We propose to look at all these productions (graphic and audio-visual) that are aimed at children and adolescents to tell them about the past and the violence that affected their parents or grandparents, or indirectly the history of their family or community, or, more broadly, their country.

Terrorism, Counter-Terrorism and Anti-Terrorism in Contemporary Europe (1960s to the Present): Internationalisation, Circulation and Representations

The aim of this conference is to examine the modalities and consequences of terrorist action, as well as the interweaving of anti-terrorist practices (public policies, legal frameworks, prevention) and counter-terrorist practices (operational, military or police actions) aimed at containing terrorism in societies which are not engaged in international warfare. The aim of this conference is to analyse the ways in which anti-terrorism and counter-terrorism have mutually redefined each other, while constantly reconfiguring the boundaries of political, military, police and legal interventions across the European continent from the second half of the 20th century onwards.In addition to this political and institutional approach, the conference will also look into the representations, as well as the social and media effects of these phenomena.

L’étude des expériences combattantes, dans toute leur complexité et pluralité, vise à se projeter au-delà d’une simple analyse des institutions militaires, de leurs stratégies et de leurs armements. Elle doit s’intéresser aux dynamiques relationnelles des combattant·es, en accordant une attention particulière aux interactions du quotidien, souvent perçues à tort comme anodines. Ces solidarités, liens affectifs et paroles ne sont pas des épiphénomènes de leur vécu : ils en sont des éléments constitutifs, qui influencent tant leur cohésion que la manière par laquelle ils vivent et comprennent le combat. C’est cette thématique que le colloque entend traiter en étudiant les grammaires affectives des combattants, c’est-à-dire l’ensemble des interactions, paroles et liens émotionnels qui sous-tendent et modèlent leurs expériences de la guerre.

The Summer Academy addresses the question of how landscapes become memory spaces of human violence – and how we deal today with these silent, often overlooked archives.

La Communauté Économique Des États d’Afrique de l’Ouest (CEDEAO) a été créée par le traité de Lagos signé le 28 Mai 1975 par quinze pays de l’Afrique de l’Ouest. La CEDEAO avait initialement pour objectif principal de « promouvoir la coopération et l’intégration dans la perspective d’une Union économique de l’Afrique de l’Ouest. Cette Communauté s’est par la suite intéressée à des questions plus politiques. L’intégration économique européenne a beaucoup évolué. En considérant ces deux exemples, juristes sénégalais et français entendent questionner les liens entre intégration économique et paix.

Le phénoménologue allemand Max Scheler (1874-1928) a été une figure philosophique importante en France dans la première partie du XX^e siècle. Il a en effet été le premier phénoménologue traduit en français avant Husserl et Heidegger. Cependant, il a par la suite peu à peu été oublié avant d’être progressivement recouvert depuis quelques décennies. Cette journée d’études entend s’intéresser à l’actualité de Scheler en France, c’est-à-dire d’une part à l’importance de sa pensée en France au cours du XX^e siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui, et d’autre part aux travaux contemporains sur son œuvre.

Every ten years, the United Nations celebrates the anniversary of its creation. Each time it is an opportunity to adapt the Organization to the world around it. In 1995, the Secretary-General saw in the fiftieth anniversary the opportunity for a transition de la vieille à la nouvelle ONU. A similar ambition guided the Millennium Summit in 2005, during which it was a question of “using imagination to strengthen [the] structures”, as Kofi Annan, then Secretary-General, pointed out. What about twenty years later?
