Thinking from the Dual – Ontology, Theology and the Humanities through the Lens of the “Muthannā”
This international conference explores the philosophical and theological implications of the Arabic grammatical dual (al-muthannā). Situated between the paradigms of unity and multiplicity that have long structured philosophical thought, the dual offers a distinctive relational structure in which two terms are held together without fusion or hierarchy. Taking this linguistic form as a conceptual starting point, the conference investigates the possibility of thinking relation itself as originary. Particular attention will be given to the concept of ʿahd (covenant, pact, commitment) as a relational event in Islamic theology and beyond. Bringing together philosophers, theologians, and scholars from the humanities and social sciences, the conference seeks to open a field of inquiry devoted to the ontological, theological, and anthropological significance of the dual in contemporary thought.

Academic scholars and distinguished figures in interfaith dialogue will engage in discussions.

Philosophy and the National Question
Taking as its starting point the idea of “philosophical nationalism” proposed by Jacques Derrida, this seminar aims to question the way in which different national and nationalist discourses have accompanied both the construction of modern philosophical historiography and the development of comparative or intercultural philosophy. The division of the world into “philosophical nations” still constitutes today the starting point of any comparative effort and leads to making the “dialogue between traditions” a discourse tending to legitimize national ideologies.

Ḥanbalism and Ašʿarism have been for more than a century represented as two inherently antagonistic theological schools. “Literalist”, “fideist” and “traditionalist”, Ḥanbalism is said to be the uncompromising opponent of rationalist currents. Contemporary Wahhabi-Salafism is perceived itself as a legitimate heir to this doctrine and a modern replica of this struggle. However, several academic studies are shaking up this reading grid and leading to a revision of our certainties by renewing our approaches. Through this international conference, we hope to give them more visibility, to question our representations of Ašʿarism, Ḥanbalism and the contemporary currents that claim to be the later in order to renew our understanding of theological quarrels.

Residency in tribute to the heritage of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish
Cet appel est ouvert aux artistes et chercheurs de tous les pays et de toutes les nationalités de la région MENA (Moyen-Orient et Afrique du Nord) et sa diaspora. La chaire Mahmoud Darwich, Bozar, la fondation A. M. Qattan, la fondation Camargo et le Mucem unissent leurs forces pour lancer le premier appel à candidatures en l’honneur de l’héritage du poète palestinien Mahmoud Darwich. Cet appel a pour but d’encourager les résonances contemporaines de l’œuvre du poète palestinien Mahmoud Darwich et de ses influences sur la création artistique et intellectuelle dans le monde contemporain arabe,européen et méditerranéen. Ce premier appel à candidatures est accompagné d’un propos curatorial d’Elia Suleiman.

The maqālāt treaties in 3rd-9th and 4th-10th centuries
Doxography as source and gender
Notre connaissance des premiers siècles du kalām repose presque exclusivement sur des doxographies dans lesquelles ont été consignées, classées et réarrangées les différentes thèses et doctrines des théologiens. Procédant par « unités de divergence », les traités de maqālāt sont un genre doxographique qui connut un essor dans le monde islamique aux IIIe, IXe et IVe, Xe siècles. Nous examinerons lors de cette journée d’études les principaux traités de maqālāt de cette époque, à la fois en tant que source des premières grandes ontologies du kalām et en tant que genre autonome qui remplit un certain nombre de fonctions normatives, théologiques et politiques, au sein de la communauté religieuse.

Commentaries on Ibn Sīnā’s Qaṣīdat al-nafs
Two postdoc research grants
Suite à la nomination à un poste définitif d’un de nos chercheurs, nous avons le plaisir d’offrir deux bourses de recherches postdoctorales pour une durée de 12 mois et de 9 mois respectivement pour le projet « Avicenna East & West I : Commentaries on the Qaṣīdat al-nafs ». Le objectifs du projet sont : (1) Comprendre la diffusion de la pensée avicennienne au sens large dans l’Orient musulman à travers l’analyse des commentaires du Poème de l’âme. (2) Procéder à une analyse transversale des commentaires pour déterminer sur quelles questions précises, en quels termes, en utilisant quels types d’arguments, quelles références, quel type de discours, les commentateurs s’affrontent au texte et entre eux.

Current Perspectives on Ibn ʿArabī and “Akbarī” Thought
The aim of this meeting is to bring together confirmed and emerging specialists in order to gain some perspective on the current academic research on Ibn ʿArabī and “Akbarī” thought and to discuss research directions for the future. It will also bring to light questions arising from the reading and use of Ibn ʿArabī’s ideas today, taking into account the new approaches and better access to the texts provided by recent tools for textual analysis, and evaluating how our present-day situation shapes our understanding of his works, and conversely, what an informed reading can bring to current re-appropriations and (mis)use.

Pop Culture in the Arabian Peninsula
Arabian Humanities No. 14 (Spring 2020)
The literature on pop culture in the Arabian Peninsula is particularly thin. While a rich scholarship has analyzed oral culture and vernacular poetry, less ink was spilled on those forms of culture that use new media, from tape recording to mobile phone aps and from TV production to YouTube. This issue of Arabian Humanities seeks to fill that gap and to analyze pop culture in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

Les vers d’Ibn Al-Wardi ont beau nous prévenir, nous sommes toujours happés par les souvenirs de l’histoire, qu’ils nous montrent un modèle ou nous inhibent. Le présent peut-il se détacher du passé pour affronter l’avenir ? C’est sur les terres de la mémoire, de l’oubli, de la création et du fantasme que se déroulera la 22e édition de la semaine arabe de l’École normale supérieure. Elle rassemblera ceux qui pensent que demain ne peut être compris sans observer hier, et ceux qui aspirent à une création radicalement nouvelle, au-delà de toute tradition.

"Iǧtihād" and "taqlīd" in Sunni and Shiite Islam
L'histoire de la pensée musulmane montre que la relation entre le taqlīd et l’iǧtihād est complexe. Le dossier de ce MIDÉO se propose d’approfondir les deux logiques à la lumière du patrimoine islamique. Les contributions pourront souligner les discours théologiques de légitimité ou de réfutation, mais aussi leur articulation. Au-delà de la rivalité entre les deux logiques, il conviendra de vérifier si l’on reste bien dans un continuum, et de vérifier que si les perspectives hégémoniques sont rivales, elles ne sont pas incompatibles.

Philosophical Hermeneutics in the Islamicate Context
This conference would like to engage with one specific context among all those which were and still are, as it were, “affected” by philosophical hermeneutics: the Islamicate context. The latter seems particularly relevant: on the one hand because it is intimately intertwined with the Western context; on the other hand because the Islamicate context retains a clear reference to religion that makes its entanglement with philosophical hermeneutics a burning challenge for all parties involved. The universality of the hermeneutic order should be put to the test of the Islamicate context within three different angles: the exegetical aspect, in order to see in what extend philosophical hermeneutics can contribute to rethink the understanding of the Koran in the contemporary context; the interpretative aspect, to address different contemporary attempts to reinterpret the classical – philosophical, spiritual or legal – heritage; the critical aspect, to present different political and critical issues raised by the question of the encounter between philosophical hermeneutics and Islamic thought.

Poètes, philosophes, historiens, musiciens, les explorations intellectuelles et sensibles de ces grands penseurs recouvrent tous les champs du savoir, de la musicologie et de la mystique, aux mathématiques, de l’astronomie à la médecine. Ces quatre grands penseurs des IXe, XIIe et XIVe siècle, furent également de grands voyageurs, curieux du monde et de leur époque. Ils vécurent dans les cités qui firent le rayonnement de l'empire islamique, de Séville à Damas, du Caire à Bagdad. La réception de leur œuvre dépasse largement les frontières de leurs régions d’élection, comme de leur époque.

« Le voyage de Barrès, après ceux de Chateaubriand, de Lamartine, de Gautier, de Gérard de Nerval, aura été le dernier des voyages romantiques d’Orient, des voyages vers l’Orient romantique. Là encore 1914 marque la grande coupure. Cet Orient n’existe plus. » (Albert Thibaudet) La journée se propose d’interroger dans quelle mesure la Grande Guerre modifie la perception et l’écriture de l’Orient chez Barrès. Pour éclairer la genèse d’Une enquête aux pays du Levant, récit né du voyage de 1914 et publié en 1923, on confrontera l’exemple de Barrès aux cas d’écrivains et de savants orientalistes, que ces derniers soient les contemporains ou les informateurs du voyageur.

This international workshop will deal with the relations between Europe and the Arabian Peninsula in the Modern Era, from the beginnings of globalization until the most recent economic and strategic developments. In order to study both the evolution and the contents of such relations, two main topics will be given a more particular interest: Cultural and Scientific Relations in connection with the change of mutual understanding from the 19th to the 21th century; Evolution of Economic relations from the 19th to the 21th century.
