    Poetic Insurrections

Romantic Legacies in Modern and Contemporary Film Aesthetics

The ‘return’ to Romanticism in the recent consideration of modernist cinemas can be taken as a way to frame the apparent contradictions in the work of a number of key figures: the revolutionary cinema of Jean-Luc Godard seems at odds with the seeming reactionism of a sanctification of natural beauty in his ‘late’ works. The strict materialism of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, in its turn, gave way to reflections on the necessity of myth and utopian ideals in the politicization of art. And although the cinema of Marguerite Duras is characterized by a destructive negativity, her films exhibit a minute attention to material presence. We believe that the same contradictions that characterize these works can be found in the films of a number of contemporary filmmakers - Chantal Akerman, Abbas Kiarostami, Hong Sang-soo, Wang Bing, Lav Diaz, Albert Serra etc. - allowing us to align them with the project of aesthetic modernism. It is our contention that this project can indeed best be approached by considering its romantic undercurrent.

    The untranslatability of Antiquity

    From philosophy to historical anthropology

Polemicist Writers and Polemical Essays in World Literature

This conference intends to reflect on the articulation between literature and politics by taking the polemical essay and the polemical writer out of their local and historical anchorage and placing them in the perspective of world literature. Because of its hic et nunc inscription, the polemical essay seems particularly unfit to participate in it, that is, to “circulate beyond their culture of origin, either in translation or in their original” (Damrosch, 2003). And yet, these writers circulate, these writings are translated. What are the consequences on their contentious belonging to the literary domain?

    Dispossessing - dispossessed

    Telling tales

    Perspective journal, no.2022-2

From the stories that inspire images and art objects, to those (re)constituted by its viewers, to the “story-telling” of art historians, this issue is intended to make use of the act of narrating as a productively destabilizing heuristic tool. Even in the absence of figured diegetic content, the image and the art object narrate, if only as witnesses of an era or practices, as vehicles of narrativity.

New masses, old questions. New views on collective intelligence

    Revue « Essais »

In a regressive approach, this thematic issue of the journal Essais envisages starting from the new configurations of the mass in the digital age to question in a fresh way the ambivalence constitutive of the historical reflection on the masses, at the same time fantasized for their intelligence and their potential of emancipation and depreciated for their incompetence and their passivity. This issue, in an interdisciplinary approach, aims to bring together specialists in new technologies, the practices and imaginaries they engender, with those interested in the theoretical, historical, fictional and figurative dimensions of this collective subject.

Jurists and the Medieval State: Varieties and Development of a Symbiotic Relationship, 1000-1500

    4th Workshop on Legal Culture

This workshop proposes to look at the evolution of the roles that jurists played in government, as the latter developed and became more complex in the period between ca. 1000 and 1500. Historians have long accepted that university trained jurists, both clerical and lay, were instrumental to the development of medieval government. The growth of the administrative apparatus of government and the expansion of its claims of authority and control on society combined with the thickening numbers of law graduates to broaden the scope of the service that jurists provided to rulers. By inviting participants to focus their analysis on a common set of questions (specified below), this workshop will attempt to bring out the stable as well as the dynamic aspects of that service.
