Dress metaphors of the body in Antiquity
Il s’agira de s’intéresser aux métaphores vestimentaires antiques en s’interrogeant à la fois sur les motivations de cet emploi métaphorique et sur les manières dont la métaphore est employée. Dans la lignée des travaux métaphorologiques, ouverts par H. Blumenberg, on pourra se demander si cette métaphore vestimentaire pour parler du corps dans ses rapports à l’âme est toujours la même, ou s’il convient au contraire d’en étudier l’historicité. On s’interrogera ainsi sur ce que dit la métaphore vestimentaire de la conceptualisation du rapport entre le corps et l’âme à chaque fois qu’elle est employée. Quelle est la fonction didactique ou heuristique de cette métaphore ? Comment cette métaphore évolue-t-elle et prend-t-elle un sens différent dans des contextes philosophiques et littéraires variés d’Homère à Augustin d’Hippone ?

Floods and Other Destructions. Stories about the End in the Ancient Eastern Mediterranean
Le colloque porte sur la pratique de mise en récit des moments de crise, de destruction et de désagrégation sociale au sein de différentes civilisations du pourtour de la Méditerranée orientale ancienne (IIe-Ier millénaire av. J.-C.). À travers l’analyse des convergences et des divergences entre les modèles narratifs concernés – issus de la Grèce ancienne et de la Mésopotamie, du Levant et de l’ancien Israël – on examinera les éléments linguistiques et les conceptions mobilisés afin de décrire ce qui détruit – mais aussi, en contre-jour, ce qui fonde – l’identité d’une société et de ses institutions, ainsi que sa manière de se mettre en relation avec le divin et la sphère religieuse. La perspective transversale et interdisciplinaire du colloque permettra également de discuter la possibilité d’inscrire les récits et discours analysés dans un horizon culturel partagé, où chaque civilisation vient inscrire ses spécificités.

Untranslatables of Antiquity: from Philosophy to Historical Anthropology
Translating is an act of opening oneself, mutual exploration and intercommunication between two cultures, allowing for the transfer of a semantic concept from a language to another. Moreover, this process has to meet several needs and practices, both different and contradictory. Thus, whatever it is the principle applied in the process, resulting in a translation either very close to its original source [Berman 1984] or adjusted to the rules of the target language [Eco 2007], translating demands to adapt and transform the semantic core. Once a word, or a category of words, is transferred from a linguistic system to another, this process brings about a semantic shift which makes the word itself an “untranslatable”. These “untranslatable” words can be provided by different sources, such as manuscript transmission, epigraphy, numismatic and modern literatures.

Une exposition et des conférences mettront à l'honneur cet événement.

Revivals of ancient transgression
Modern and contemporary times
During the first three workshops organised by the junior research team TAntALE, the study of transgression took place within the chronological boundaries of Antiquity: definition of the concept of transgression, analysis of the transgressive figures of Antiquity and how they put the norms of the city to the test, individually or collectively. In this logic, the international conference of November 2020 focused on the place of transgression in the construction of political power. For the fourth and final workshop, we will go beyond these chronological limits and study the phenomena of transgression in the relationship that authors, artists and later societies have with Antiquity. The proposals will have to fall within the period between the mid-14th and 21st centuries.

The junior researchers and PhD students from the Anthropology of the ancient world curriculum of the PhD course in Classics and Archeology are promoting the fourth edition of the seminar cycle Classicamente. Dialoghi Senesi sul Mondo Antico. This year's edition will focus on the varied methodologies and hermeneutical perspectives which represent the scientific guidelines followed by scholars in anthropology of the ancient world ever since its development. It will also focus on those approaches that today contribute to a constant enrichment and renovation of this field of study. Our goal is to offer to all those who take part the chance to present their work, be it the result of long research or elements of a work in progress, in an enviroment open to discussion between different perspectives (anthropological, philological, historical, archeological, semiotic etc.).

The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

Engravings and the distribution of ancient reliefs in the modern era
Œuvres sur papier multiples, reproductibles, facilement transportables et relativement peu onéreuses, les gravures constituent dès la Renaissance un vecteur privilégié de diffusion des savoirs antiquaires. De manière très précoce, dès le dernier quart du XVe siècle en Italie, les graveurs s’emparent des modèles sculptés antiques, et tout particulièrement des reliefs (Le Triomphe de Bacchus et Ariane, burin florentin, British Museum, v. 1480-1490). Les interprétations de sarcophages, de décors monumentaux ou de stèles continuent à être particulièrement prisées durant toute l’époque moderne et font l’objet de publications ponctuelles ou plus systématiques, sous la forme de gravures isolées, de recueils ou d’ouvrages scientifiques illustrés. L’objet de cette journée d’étude sera d’étudier comment l’estampe a permis de faire circuler dans toute l’Europe des images de reliefs uniques ou typiques.

Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 4: Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. By focusing on names, images and narratives, we will look for connections but also discrepancies, in order to highlight, from duly selected cases or files, the specifications of the different languages used to unfold the potentials of the divine names. In the spirit of the MAP project, we will pay special attention to the links that the names, the images and the narratives convey.

Au moment où Michel Foucault distinguait les aphrodisia grecs de la chair chrétienne et de la « bonne sexualité » contemporaine, plusieurs spécialistes de l’Antiquité, aux États-Unis et en France, se réunissaient pour mettre au jour l’ampleur des relations, des espaces et des pratiques poétiques et iconographiques placées sous le signe d’erôs. Presque trente ans plus tard, la traduction de l'ouvrage Before Sexuality. The Construction of Erotic Experience in the Ancient Greek World nous offre la réédition de ce dialogue transatlantique. Les tables rondes de la journée du 25 mai accueilleront les auteur-e-s, les éditeurs, des psychanalystes et des chercheur-e-s qui ont trouvé dans cet ouvrage des pistes pour leurs propres travaux, maintenant. Tradition and transmission in Antiquity: interdisciplinary reflections
Les notions de tradition et de transmission sont indissociables l’une de l’autre. La tradition, définie comme le contenu culturel du passé, est transmise par la parole, l’écrit ou encore l’exemple, et perdure sur des générations. Les études récentes mettent en lumière son rôle constructiviste, en tant que nouveau processus culturel fondé sur un ensemble d’éléments du passé, qu’ils soient réels ou imaginaires. Ce processus d’élaboration, loin d’être passif, est dynamique et volontaire, et implique des choix qui sont liés à la construction de la mémoire et de l’identité des groupes et des communautés. Ce sont ces principes créatifs que nous souhaitons mettre au centre de ce colloque. Nous analyserons pour cela les supports, les agents ainsi que les contextes et circonstances de l’élaboration et de la transmission de la tradition. Les principales questions abordées seront l’identité et le statut de ses acteurs, les stratégies adoptées ainsi que les effets sur la construction d’une société à une époque donnée.
