  Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

  Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)

  The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.

  Images and Borderlands: Mediterranean basin between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early Modern Age

  Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape”  or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

  The horror movie audience: experience, uses and practices

  Cette journée d’étude propose d'étudier le cinéma d'horreur du point de vue de sa réception. Il s’agira notamment de déconstruire les préjugés encore tenaces sur le public de ces productions et le plaisir qu’elles procurent, en mettant en évidence la multiplicité des lectures et appropriations dont elles font l’objet, la complexité des plaisirs et des fantasmes qu’elles nourrissent, ainsi que la pluralité des spectateurs·rices qu’elles attirent devant les écrans. Une attention particulière sera portée à la diversité des contextes socio-historiques de réception de ces films et séries, mais aussi à la multiplicité des expériences, usages et pratiques des cinéphiles, « fans » et spectateurs·rices ordinaires affectionnant ce genre cinématographique riche et hétérogène.

  The Faces of Garbo

  The construction, circulation and appropriations of a global star image

  Beyond the fascination that “Garbo’s face” inspired, which Roland Barthes compared to a “Platonic idea” in a famous passage from Mythologies (1957), this symposium wishes to study the different faces of Garbo, embedding her screen performances as well as the extra-filmic material which helped build her star persona within a range of social and cultural contexts. Contributions will address both the construction of her image (comparing, for instance, the promotional discourse surrounding her in different countries) and its reception, be it by critics or “ordinary” filmgoers.

  From the city to the nation: continuity and rupture in the history of contemporary Spanish song (19th-21st centuries)

  Afin de déconstruire le récit sur la chanson espagnole instrumentalisé par le franquisme, ce colloque invite à réfléchir sur une histoire plus complète et plus complexe de celle-ci, ainsi que sur l’identification des topiques qui ont permis de créer une cohésion nationale à travers la chanson contemporaine. Dans ce cadre, il est également nécessaire de prendre en compte l'importance des chansons dans la création et la transmission des identités liées aux régions, aux villes, aux lieux et même aux quartiers, qui contribuent à l'analyse avec une approche différente. Ce colloque a pour objet d’examiner, dans l’aire culturelle hispanique, les rapports entre chanson et territoire à l’époque contemporaine, de 1808 à nos jours et étudier, dans la chanson, l’évocation des lieux et des imaginaires qu’elle mobilise pour devenir emblématique du territoire national.

  Taking part in Art and Culture

  Practices, Theories and Policies in today’s Cultural Mediation

  The international conference “Taking part in Art and Culture. Practices, Theories and Policies in today’s Cultural Mediation” is focusing on the issue of “participation” in the cultural field. We will be looking into the ways in which it has evolved (notably since the 1970s) and in which it influences the role of cultural mediation today. The purpose of this conference is to present an overview of these issues through the particular prism of the posture of mediators, a posture that may be characterised as paradoxical, notwithstanding its precarious status in the cultural field. Mediators are the depositaries of the link existing between the public and artistic or cultural offers, and their voice can never be captured as the voice of the public, the voice of artists, nor even as the voice of their employing structures.

  Le prochain numéro de Perspective: actualité en histoire de l’art sera consacré aux transferts culturels entre le Portugal et les pays lusophones (Angola, Brésil, Cap-Vert, Guinée-Bissau, Guinée équatoriale, Macao, Mozambique, Sao Tomé-et-Principe, Timor oriental). Il s’agit, dans ce numéro, de reconsidérer de manière critique les discours de l’histoire de l’art ancrés dans la perspective de l’État-nation, en examinant l’étendue et les spécificités du territoire en tant que constructions culturelles et historiques. Se détournant ainsi des approches endogènes ou essentialistes, nous proposons d’envisager le sujet au-delà des stéréotypes, tels que la mythologie des grandes découvertes et le luso-tropicalisme, les représentations identitaires, la dichotomie entre beaux-arts et arts populaires ou encore la division entre centre et périphérie.

  Poetry and Politics in the Viking and Norman Diasporas (Ninth-Thirteenth Centuries)

  The conference will address the relationships between poetry and power in the medieval world, fostering exchanges between historians and scholars in the fields of Latin and vernacular literatures. The poems under scrutiny will be those composed in the Viking and Norman diasporas between the ninth and the thirteenth century, covering a wide geographical expanse, from Iceland to Southern Italy, through Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia, Kievan Rus’ and part of the Latin East. The main questions which will be studied are: (1) the specific context for the composition of political poetry (e.g. encomiastic or satiric); (2) poetry as a means for the representation of power or the transmission of moral or religious conceptions (e.g. mirrors for princes, didactic or gnomic poetry); (3) the reasons for preferring poetry over prose in order to convey political ideas.

  LGBTI and Queer Arts, Cultures and Activisms

  In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists.

  Manufacturing collective identities. Art at work in the contemporary era (19th-21st centuries)

  Les derniers siècles (XIX-XXIe) ont été le terrain d'une reconfiguration incessante des identités collectives et de leurs imaginaires. Ces fluctuations sont le résultat des transformations majeures que sont les révolutions politiques, les phénomènes de modernisation industrielle, les nouvelles dynamiques de territorialisation et de mondialisation. Par conséquent, il est important pour l’histoire de l'art d'engager une interprétation de l'œuvre artistique en l'intégrant aux facteurs extérieurs. Dans une volonté de s'éloigner des schémas traditionnels, qui excluent, désengagent, décontextualisent et dépolitisent, le monde artistique interroge le lien entre art et société, entre création et construction des identités collectives. Ce sont d'ailleurs l'émergence, la grande diversité et le caractère mouvant de ces dernières qui sont ici sujet d’intérêt.
