  The drudges of the Axis : exploitable persecuted persons and ambivalent persecutors during WWII (Asia, Europe, Latin America)

  This meeting is a continuation of the UFA (French-German University) Montpellier-Weimar Colloquium "Construction of myths of war heroes (Germany, France, Japan) organized by Philippe Wellnitz and Gérard Siary in Berlin in 2014. After having there discussed the ambivalence in the construction of "war-heroe", this new conference is interested this time in two other ambivalences associated with the Second World War: those of the positioning of certain host states and "the ethics of survival" of persecuted persons who fled from Axis-occupied territories to other Axis-allied or to neutral States.

  Maxim Kantor – The Future of Humanity

  The goal of this international conference is to explore Kantor’s artistic work, his painting and writing, as a contribution he makes for the future of humanity. Kantor has been known as a Russian dissident and a fierce critic of the political development in the former Soviet Union, and his view of the current social, political, and spiritual situation of Europe is no less sharp. The scientific committee considers a strong analysis or a close reading of Kantor’s works as a major criterium in selecting the papers. As many writings are available only in Russian, the scientific committee strongly encourages scholars who are fluent in Russian to submit proposals that could make these texts available to a larger public.

  Composership before Music Printing

  Suite aux travaux de Paul Zumthor, Leo Treitler, Mary Carruthers et bien d’autres, on considère que la littérature et la musique médiévales relèvent principalement des pratiques de tradition orale. La recherche sur ces pratiques, les diverses remises en question du rôle de l’auteur et le fait qu’une grande part de la littérature et de la musique médiévale est transmise de façon anonyme, nous ont amenés à amalgamer anonymat et oralité, au point d’affirmer que les notions d’auteur et de compositeur étaient étrangères au Moyen Âge. Or, ces derniers vingt ans, les chercheurs en histoire de la littérature ont largement remis ce point de vue en question et ont fait apparaître l’auteur à travers différentes analyses des sources. Cette remise en question commence seulement à se faire plus attentivement en musicologie. Cette journée d’étude a pour but de contribuer à cette remise en question en rassemblant différentes façons de réévaluer la notion de compositeur au Moyen Âge et de faire apparaître les modalités de son émergence avant que l’imprimerie musicale se mette en place.

  Ce projet de recherche a pour objectif de saisir, d'analyser et de décrire le processus dans lequel le caractère « public » d’un large secteur du théâtre français — le mot théâtre étant pris ici au sens large, incluant diverses formes d'expression performative — s'est forgé non sans ménager des recoupements et des compromis avec les acteurs, les usages, les règles qui relèvent de la sphère du droit « privé ». L’analyse prend donc en compte non seulement ledit « théâtre public » mais aussi le « théâtre privé » – également susceptible de recevoir des subventions ou le produit d’une taxe parafiscale – dans lequel la notion de public intervient toujours au sens de collectivité de spectateurs.

  Common ground: ethnomusicology and "popular music studies"

  L’étude des faits musicaux a toujours été pris sous des focales disciplinaires plurielles : musicologie, histoire, sociologie, anthropologie, mais aussi études littéraires, géographie, et bien d’autres sciences humaines. La nécessité d’un dialogue entre ces différentes approches demeure importante. La Société française d’ethnomusicologie et la branche francophone d’Europe de l’International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM-Bfe) souhaitent contribuer à cet effort de dialogue en organisant pour la première fois un colloque commun qui interroge les frontières disciplinaires mouvantes qui touchent à l’étude des formes musicales contemporaines. La question de « terrains communs » pour les deux champs d’études permettra d’envisager les dynamiques croisées qui traversent les musiques populaires contemporaines, entendues dans une acception large, entre industrialisation de la musique et relocalisation des pratiques, entre nouvelles technologies de médiatisation, méthode ethnographique, analyse musicale et cultural studies.

  Images and Borderlands: Mediterranean basin between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early Modern Age

  Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape”  or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

  Post-cinema: Practices of research and creation

  Journal Images Secondes (Nº3, 2021)

  The third issue of the French journal Images secondes questions the heuristic and critical potential of the notion of "post-cinema" in the context of a general reflection on the “reconfigurations” (de Rosa and Hediger, 2016) of the cinematic medium in the age of networked digital media. We agree with Shane Denson and Julia Leyda that if post-cinematic media “concern the emergence of a new 'structure of feeling' or 'episteme', new forms of affect or sensibility”, then “traditional scholarly forms and methods for investigating these issues are unlikely to provide adequate answers” (Denson & Leyda, 2016: 6). For this reason, this issue will give priority to contributions that depart from the traditional forms of academic publishing to develop formats which explore the unique potentialities of online dissemination.
