«Who Cares?» is a newly-formed group of scholars from the Université Paris Nanterre, working specifically on the history of psychiatry in the English-speaking world. We are keen to encourage discussions on this subject and strengthen its international dimension. Our aim is also to foster further discussions on links and comparisons between historical perspectives on psychiatry in the French and the English-speaking worlds. This international conference will welcome all historical approaches to psychiatry and more generally to the treatment of mental illness which reflect on the topic “People and places” from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century in English-speaking countries.

Emerging Figures of Political Power during the Iron Age II-III in Ancient Western Asia and Eastern Mediterranean: Connected Histories?

Bringing together specialists of the Ancient Near Eastern and Ancient Greek worlds, this international congress will discuss the appearance during the Iron Age I-II of new figures of power and of power management, opposing or presenting political alternatives to the ideologies and socio-economic functioning of the dominant power systems, thus leading, at times, to significant political changes. The debate may highlight the transformative capacity of ancient political systems, going beyond the usual opposition between the extreme conservatism recognized in Near Eastern despotisms, centralized but also often imperialist, and, on the other hand, the evolutionary tendency attributed to the political systems of the Greek world.

Acteurs, pratiques, objets et espaces de connexion au XXe siècle

Cette rencontre sera l’occasion de penser la fabrique des relations internationales depuis les Amériques latines en s’appuyant sur des réflexions récentes autour de la diplomatie culturelle, la Guerre froide globale, les circulations étudiantes et militantes, ainsi que l’émergence de nouveaux acteurs internationaux ou l’élaboration de normes internationales. En partant de l’hypothèse que les Amériques latines sont traversées par les principales dynamiques qui participent à la construction de l’ordre mondial depuis la fin du XIX^e siècle jusqu’à nos jours, ces journées d’échanges ouvriront un espace de discussion autour de trois axes structurants : les espaces, les pratiques et les objets, et enfin, les acteurs et les actrices.

Decoding European History through Guns: Methodologies and Research Approaches

What are firearms? How did they impact on the history of European societies? What are the more promising research approaches for studying them? Firearms hold profound implications for European societies, influencing international relations, the diffusion of violence, and State sovereignty. This workshop will convene researchers examining themes such as the relationship between European States and guns, global efforts to regulate arms markets, the role of firearms in changing the societal perception of violence, and the semantic nuances defining these instruments. Through exploration of diverse research methodologies, the workshop aims to highlight the significance of firearms as both a subject of scholarly inquiry and a lens for examining critical aspects of contemporary history, shedding new light on the European past – one trigger pull at a time.

A Byzantine Century

Reassessing Neo-Byzantine Style from Paris to Algiers to Tiflis – and Beyond (ca. 1800 – 1920)

In the wake of blossoming discussions on the reception history of the Middle Ages, this conference attempts to rethink the protean and eclectic term “Neo-Byzantine” from a broad perspective. We are particularly interested in the complex articulation between art historical theory, architectural and artistic practice, and the actual patronages and uses of the “Neo-Byzantine.” We invite scholars dealing with the issue from a broad chronological (1800–1920) and geographical frame, bridging Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. We especially welcome are case studies or broader reflections on the uses of “Neo-Byzantine” architecture in processes of identity and nation-building and within frameworks of orientalism and colonialism.

Flatterie et flatteurs dans les sociétés anciennes

Pratiques, personnages et interprétations

Le colloque est consacré à l’étude du comportement qui consiste à adresser à autrui des propos jugés excessivement louangeurs par des observateurs extérieurs, qui l’attribuent à une arrière-pensée intéressée : il s’agira d’examiner comment ce type de rapport à l’autre (κολακεία ou adulatio, typique des κόλακες ou adulatores) s’est manifesté et a été perçu par les penseurs, philosophes, historiens, orateurs et poètes, en Grèce et à Rome. On s’interrogera sur les dimensions morales qui motivent le jugement globalement négatif des Anciens, sur son contexte d’appréciation et sur la relation entre flatteurs et flattés. L’étude de ce comportement offre ainsi, dans le champ de l’histoire des mentalités, une forme d’approche des sociétés anciennes, au croisement des recherches sur la morale, l’identité, la sociabilité et les formes de pouvoir.

Circus arts without borders

For a world history of the circus from Antiquity to the present day

The aim of this conference is to decompartmentalise these historiographies by inviting researchers in history and, more broadly, in the arts and the social sciences (performing arts, art history, sociology, anthropology, etc.), as well as those involved in the artistic and cultural world, to combine their approaches. This conference sees itself as a first step towards a world history of the circus, while being aware of the limits of such an undertaking. The historiography of the circus is recent, and many aspects remain unexplored. There is a lack of works that build bridges between different national histories. Moreover, some of them have not yet been written. The history of the circus in certain regions of the world and at certain periods remains largely unknown. Consequently, papers taking a local approach may be proposed if they draw attention to these areas where the history of the circus has yet to be written. However, the emphasis will be on comparative or connected, global or even worldwide approaches. The aim will be to highlight intercultural dynamics rather than local particularities.

A century of educational change: Global trends and reform circulations in the 20th century

This hybrid event aims to present the World Education Reform Database (WERD). The Database gathers educational reforms reported by States over the 20th century. It currently encompasses 10,955 reforms from 189 countries and territories. Recently, data from the UNESCO-IBE's archives center were compiled to complete this massive database. This event aims to enhance reflexions on the use of such data into ongoing research program and practices, introduce to methodological challenges and potentiality, and provide concrete case studies that contributes to the historicization of intergovernmental cooperation.

Archiver et conserver ses documents de travail (XVIe-XVIIIe siècle)

Avec l’essor du concept de literacy, la « vie des écrits » a animé les récentes études historiques. Le portefeuille pourrait ajouter à ce renouvellement historiographique un outil utilisé dans tous les secteurs de la société qui renferme des documents permettant de se rapprocher au plus près du quotidien des acteurs. Brouillons, prises de notes de lecture, lettres, imprimés et autres sont des « écrits vivants » offrant la possibilité d’écrire une histoire matérielle, culturelle, sociale et politique. Suite au succès de la journée d’études « Le portefeuille sous toutes ses coutures. Archiver et conserver ses documents de travail (XVI^e-XVIII^e siècle) », la publication d’un volume collectif a été décidée. C’est ici le portefeuille comme outil de travail dans la société entière qui est envisagé : le portefeuille d’un ministre, d’un négociant, d’un artiste, d’un artisan, d’un homme de lettres ou encore d’un savant. Des propositions sur ses utilisations au XIX^e siècle seront également les bienvenues.

Qui se souvient aujourd’hui d’Amédée Méreaux ? L’homme et le musicien n’ont certes pas totalement disparu de la mémoire de Rouen, où une petite rue éloignée du centre-ville porte encore aujourd’hui son nom. Néanmoins, cet artiste n’évoque aujourd'hui plus grand chose. Pourtant, Amédée Méreaux (1802-1874) est une personnalité importante du monde musical à l’époque de Berlioz.

La Ferme générale dans l'espace français et européen (1664-1794)

Le projet « Ferme Générale » vise à étudier l’impact d’une organisation fiscale (1664-1794), discriminante mais rationnelle, sur les territoires et les sociétés de la France moderne. Il cerne les dynamiques de fonctionnement d’une institution ancrée dans une culture du privilège et donc de l’inégalité, mais tout autant dans une culture administrative éclairée visant l’efficacité. Véritable « État dans l’État », omniprésente à des échelles diverses et sur des territoires très différenciés pour collecter près de 50 % des revenus ordinaires de la monarchie, dotée de moyens exceptionnels de coercition, mais capable de transactions, la Ferme générale a localement renforcé ou affaibli le sentiment d’injustice à l’interface avec les sociétés plurielles sur lesquelles elle agit. Son originalité réside dans l’approche globale de l’objet d’histoire « Ferme générale », considérant pour la première fois cet acteur majeur de la modernité dans tous ses aspects, administratifs, politiques, économiques, sociologiques, géographiques.

(Digital) Retrospectives on Historiography from Africa. Decolonization, the African press, and the uses of knowledge

Journal « Práticas da História »

This special issue of Práticas da História reflects on contemporary epistemological possibilities and constraints in the writing of history. Therefore, it welcomes both contributions that dwell on African journals (scholarly, literary, artistic and ephemeral periodicals) from the 1950s to 1980s, and on the histories behind said periodicals. We look forward to contributions that explore different and contested visions of decolonization and future-making for the African continent and its diaspora. We also invite articles investigating differently situated historiographies from Africa: that use local vernacular by incorporating idiom, local imagery, myth and folklore; that relate to the present or the deep past. We also encourage more nuanced takes on the “nationalist historiography” that when viewed as a monolith was so dominant at the time.

History and Memory: Epistemological Reinterpretation of Africa's Past in a Post-Colonial Context

This special issue of Práticas da História is interested in receiving contributions, referring to colonial and post-colonial African contexts. It is important to better understand what is happening in different African countries, at the level of the Academy but also in other spaces where social memory and history confront each other, and how political, ideological, economic and linguistic factors interfere in those situations. In the case of the former Portuguese colonies, which will soon celebrate 50 years of independence, there are additional factors, such as the later end of colonial rule and the delay in historiography about Africa that occurred until recent decades, both in Portugal and in Brazil.

Colloque international : exploration et pratique des espace(s) dans l'art contemporain

Ce colloque vise à explorer l’espace comme notion transversale à travers le champ des arts plastiques et sa relation conflictuelle entre les matériaux, les supports et les corps impliqués. En effet, nous nous poserons la question de savoir où l’espace intervient dans l’expérimentation de la pratique plastique et de quelle façon l’espace traverse une œuvre depuis sa création jusqu’à sa composition et son exposition. Comment l’espace intervient-il dans une création plastique contemporaine ? Quelles relations naissent de cette rencontre ? Quelles hybridations pour l’espace scénique, pictural, expositif ? Quelles réappropriations ? Loin de cloisonner ce débat aux seuls arts plastiques, l’ambition de ce colloque est de faire se rencontrer des domaines de recherches variés et divergents afin d’établir un panel d’interprétations de cet espace protéiforme : continu, discontinu, plastique, physique, sémantique.

Le Projet de l’Histoire – Les Histoires du Projet

Architectes/historiens dans l’après-guerre

La relation multiforme et nuancée entre l’histoire et la conception a marqué la culture architecturale italienne de la fin du XX^e siècle et a été sa caractéristique la plus distincte sur la scène internationale. Un premier colloque tenu à Florence en novembre 2023 était centrée sur ce contexte transalpin. Ce second colloque, qui se tiendra à Lyon à l’automne 2024, ambitionne d’élargir les investigations à l’Europe et au-delà. Ce colloque vise à explorer les échanges, les tangences, les chevauchements et les frictions entre les concepteurs - de l’objet architectural, de la ville et du territoire - et les historiens de l’architecture dans le contexte culturel, politique, économique et social de la seconde moitié du XX^e siècle.
