Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity
This conference aims to study the history and evolution of two classical Greek concepts, anarchy and polyarchy, whose legacy, considered from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, unfolds at the crossroads between politics and religion. It will explore the transmission of the classical Greek, and particularly Platonic, condemnation of anarchy and polyarchy, and its connection with the apologia for monarchy in political and philosophical thought during the Hellenistic and Roman periods and in Judeo-Christian thought.

Suspense, curiosité et surprise dans les narrations antiques
Journée de lancement du programme IntrigAnt
Ce projet, porté par Louis Autin (Sorbonne Université / IUF), Rémi Bénière et Romain Loriol (Lyon-3), a pour but d’interroger la théorie du suspense et sa mise en œuvre dans les intrigues antiques. La première journée a une vocation essentiellement théorique et permettra de présenter les grands enjeux du projet, qui doit se dérouler sur trois années, avec quatre journées d’études alternativement organisées à Sorbonne Université et Lyon-3 et un colloque final.

Identity Negotiation and Ethnic Diversity in the Ancient World
The conference Between Eagles and Dragons: Identity Negotiation and Ethnic Diversity in the Ancient World explores the processes through which ethnic identities were constructed, contested, and transformed across multi-ethnic societies of ancient Eurasia. Bringing into dialogue regions from the Mediterranean to India and China, the event aims to investigate how institutions, cultural practices, languages, and historical narratives shaped categories of belonging and otherness. By adopting a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective, the conference seeks to highlight the fluid, dynamic, and historically contingent nature of identity formation in the ancient world.

Animal Behaviour and Environments: Ecological Perspectives from Antiquity to the Present
This conference aims, through a resolutely interdisciplinary approach, to explore the relations between animals and their environments. Bringing together scholars in ancient and medieval philology, the history of zoological knowledge, and contemporary ecological sciences, the event seeks to examine how living beings interact with their surroundings—and how these interactions have been conceptualised, described, and modelled from Antiquity to the present. Two main thematic axes will structure the discussion: 1. Animals and Environments: Ancient and Modern Ecologies; 2. Animal Ecological Awareness: Perception, Umwelt, and Narrative Models

This is an invitation to contribute by exploring ecological transformation, environmental thought, and ethical views on animals in Antiquity. Literary, philosophical, and historical approaches are welcome in examining how ancient cultures shaped and conceptualized their natural world. The Spatial Turn of the 1980’s shifted the attention of scholars in Humanities, Social, and Cultural Studies towards questions of human interaction with landscape and the physical environment. At the same time, the term space was defined as more than just physical places, rather, social spaces and the production of such in the context of human interaction became the leading research focus. This conference seeks to develop the research on spatial perception in ancient societies by gathering scholars of any discipline in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Sciences to discuss spatial concepts from their own disciplinary perspective.

Shaping the Past. Rappresentazione, uso e manipolazione della memoria nel mondo antico
Seminario « Semi di Sapienza »
Ce séminaire affronte le thème - complexe et débattu - de la réception et de l'utilisation de la mémoire dans le monde gréco-romain et dans les sociétés du Proche et Moyen Orient antique et tardo-antique.
Le concept de "mémoire", déterminé en premier lieu dans les travaux de Maurice Halbwachs et, plus particulièrement en histoire ancienne, par Jan et Aleida Assman, est un instrument utile d'analyse. Le processus du souvenir, s'attachant habituellement à une dynamique neurologique strictement individuelle, peut être déterminé socialement. En effet, dans les communautés anciennes, la mémoire permet de s'identifier, de communiquer et de créer des normes. Par conséquent, la relation entre mémoire et passé est centrale pour définir les conditions des dynamiques identitaires des groupes sociaux. Ainsi, elle constitue un silon de recherche pertinent pour la recherche sur les communautés du monde ancien.

La Toison d’or, trophée pour des héros ambigus de l’Antiquité au Moyen Âge
Si la quête argonautique et son dénouement tragique sont bien étudiés dans leur versant gréco-latin, leur devenir au Moyen Âge fait l’objet d’analyses moins nombreuses. Dans l’ensemble du corpus, l’imaginaire de la Toison d’or et les récits encadrant la quête argonautique restent aussi moins explorés. Phrixos, voué au sacrifice par son père Athamas, échappe à la mort grâce au bélier à la Toison d’or : l’animal mène le jeune homme en Colchide et prend symboliquement sa place sur l’autel. La Toison, dépouille sacrificielle, lui garantit pouvoir et fécondité. Une génération plus tard, Jason, parent de Phrixos, revendique ce trophée pour établir à son tour son royaume et sa lignée. Son mariage avec Médée assure temporairement sa victoire, mais la déloyauté du héros lui en ôte les fruits. Cette rencontre invite à replacer les deux héros dans leurs traditions parallèles et dans leur lien à ce trophée ambigu.

The proposed themes - governance, economy and society - do not constitute closed axes. They are intended to provide a sufficiently broad framework for a wide range of research, whether political, social, economic, cultural or methodological.

Messapie et messapien : pour un nouveau bilan archéologique, épigraphique et linguistique
Plus de vingt ans après la parution décisive des Monumenta linguae Messapicae (2002), après les résultats considérables obtenus par les fouilles des dernières décennies, et après la synthèse récente de Joachim Matzinger (2019) sur la langue messapienne qui a permis de relancer sur des bases solides la discussion des inscriptions en langue locale, le colloque international « Messapie et messapien : pour un nouveau bilan archéologique, épigraphique et linguistique » a pour objectif de faire dialoguer les épigraphistes et les linguistes spécialistes des textes en langue messapienne et les archéologues spécialistes de la culture matérielle en Messapie.
