  The Social Use Of Space In The Late Medieval European Town

  Nájera 18th International Meetings Of The Middle Ages

  In this conference we will focus on the social use of urban space in the late medieval period, an era in which (the spatial centre of) many of the present-day European towns was shaped. It wants to study how urban space was produced, constrained, and defined between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries with a comparative European perspective.

  The Virgin and the City : Urban Marian Spaces in Late Medieval Europe

  The session wishes to analyze the Marian presence in Late Medieval European cities. The scholarly importance of the session lies in understanding how the Virgin became a part of urban landscapes and how the political and civic powers enhanced religious place‐making practices. How was the Mother of God accommodated and exhibited in civic space? What does Marian images’ location reveal about the relationship between devotion and public places? Why did the Virgin become the guarantor of civic unity? And finally, how did Mary personify the “urban ideology”?

  Ces Rencontres Internationales, organisées par l'Excmo Ayuntamiento de Nájera et le Groupe d'Histoire urbaine de l'Université de Cantabrie, réuniront des spécialistes des universités d'Espagne, de France, du Portugal, d'Italie et d'Allemagne avec le but d'échanger des idées, des recherches en cours et des méthodes sur le sujet proposé, "La vie en commun dans les villes médiévales".
